Will Barboza finally make it onto the Olympic Roster in 2012, or does she end up being an alternate for Team USA for the 3rd straight Olympics?
Psychologically, I feel that it would be a pretty tough blow for any player to be an alternate for 3 consecutive Olympic teams without ever making the final roster, and I wonder if such were the case, would she have it in her to give it a 4th try in 2016.
As a Barboza fan, I am rooting for her to make it this year for sentimental reasons, but will she earn a roster spot?
I figure it comes down to the 12th spot on the final roster, and whether Hugh opts to go with a 4th OH (Barboza or Klineman), a 2nd libero (Sykora), or a 4th middle (Tamas/Scott-Arruda).
Comparing the two OH's, Klineman had the better pro season this year, is probably the better server of the two, and brings more offensively, but Barboza is better in regards to defense/passing. Barboza obviously has a lot of experience with Team USA and seems like a great teammate on the bench, which could work in her favor as well.
Thoughts?

Can't remember the last time I saw Harmotto on the floor for USA....

I expect either Scott or Tamas to get the 3rd MB spot (after Foluke and Bown), but I figure there is a chance Hugh could take a 4th MB (either Tamas or Scott- whoever doesn't get the 3rd MB spot). Harmotto is likely in the MB conversation too given her performance this past pro season.

At the time Toshi was trying to do with Barboza what he did with Tom...slightly different result...but I really like Cynthia.

Tamas is probably front runner, but Harmotto had a very good pro league, and Scott is a seasoned vet.

I agree, she wasnt one of our 14 best players, I think they wanted to nurture and give experience to someone they saw as a big future player. She may very well be an alternate again.

I do not think it is likely either that they take a 4th MB on a 12 person Olympic roster, but it is not unprecedented either. Ask Danielle Scott in 1996 for example. www.volleyball.org/olympics/teamusa.html

Barboza will be on the roster. She has the experience and all-around play that they can put her anywhere if needed.

Hugh's spoke about his strategy in regard to selecting the 2008 Men's team. He said that he was not selecting the USA All Stars but rather wanted the 12 athletes that made for the best team. Assuming this philosophy, which players have the intangibles that complete the best team? Sykora brings that in my mind, (maybe in JLP's mind too?), but hard to answer for those of us looking in from the outside . . .
