Have to ask, is the lack of a cohesive domestic tour a factor. I just think it has to be draining travelling so much. Seems when we dominate Internationally, the studs travel less. Just a thought. For Phil and Todd thats a very reasonable question, but for Jake and Sean, they played tight and gave the match away. Missed a lot of opportunities they generally convert, Rosenthal was ridiculously tentative on offense, and both players hit balls out they normally wouldnt. Excessive travel doesnt cause an outbreak of nerves.

Does anyone know if the Olympic qualifying process has to go through FIVB? I wish the AVP could run a tour where they could decide their own qualifying teams to represent their country, like through a series of points or something. The only thing is I'd hope they would adopt FIVB rules and use their volleyball so Americans would not have to make an adjustment when playing International events. Unfortunately, the FIVB decides the qualifying process, having been granted that power by the IOC. Try to go around them or secede from them, and the FIVB will simply ban any American teams from the Olympics. That's not ever going to change. I thought that the selection process is in the hands of the national governing bodies. Wasn't there a discussion among USAV and the players about whether to hold a trials tournament (like the track and field or swimming trials) or use FIVB tour points? Some felt that a televised trials would have been good for raising the profile of the sport before the Olympics, but some players were afraid that a top team might get upset.

The original question, as I read it, was whether the USA could use their own tour as the qualification process, bypassing the FIVB. Which can't be done. Once a country has amassed enough FIVB points to qualify one or two teams for the Olympics, the FIVB leaves it to the country Olympic federation to choose the teams. So you can have trials, but they would be a moot point unless the U.S. had secured spots through playing on the FIVB tour and being in the top 16 in FIVB points. Then there's the Continental Cups, but that's a whole different can of worms.

Who the hell will be representing the US for the men in Rio ? Does the US have to have a rep ? Is it possible US won't have a team in Rio ?

LATVIA!? Are you freaking kidding me? Yes, Latvia!!!! I guess you've forgotten that Plavins and his old partner upset Phil & Todd in Beijing in their opening match. Also, Latvia upset Netherlands’ fifth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor/Richard Schuil in pool play. So, they're very legit. I watched the entire match and Plavins and Smedins played amazing defense, made the right adjustments and, in the end, landed on top. It's just unfortunate for the Americans.

Just shows how much all the international teams continue to improve...In terms of Rio, how about that 7'2" kid who has won a couple of tournaments recently playing with Patterson...amazing how much that kid has improved....I feel he and Delhauser will anchor both US representatives...unless they go together and form team huge....

Doherty and Patterson will get destroyed on the world tour unless Doherty improves by leaps and bounds. I don't know the guy, so I have no idea whether he is capable of making a jump to the next level. I'd be more enthusiastic about him if he were 24 and not 28. But you never know.

I think the age factor is less for beach volleyball, and especially for a huge guy who doesn't have to worry about losing jump....From what I can tell about Doherty, I am starting to see some things that bode well...I know he is a distance right now, but so was Phil early in his career... Guess I am going on that hopeful optimism kind of thing....
