And Brasil had the best men's team when the Russian juggernaut hit. Rezende put in Giba, probably the best men's player of his era. And they lost too. So what were you saying? Sent from my iPad using ProBoards app Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's always a gamble when you change the line-up. But you gotta use your full arsenal if nothing else is working. Maybe Rezende should have brought a backup OH who isn't a few years past his prime. When Visotto went down, Wallace came in and put up MVP numbers. USA women had no way to adjust if/when Hooker faltered.

I bet Thompson was just DYING to get into the match and try to turn things around. It seemed like Berg had lost her mojo and the team needed somebody to fire them up. I have a feeling that Hugh didn't have faith in Thompson playing across the front row. If he had the option of A. Glass or Carli Lloyd, I wonder if he might have pulled his starting setter. If he wasn't concerned with Berg in the front row, I don't see that height would have been a factor in keeping Thompson on the bench. Thompson did have a solo stuff block in the match in which she started. More likely, passing was the problem and changing the setter wouldn't fix that. (I'm not sure, but I suspect the only way he could have replaced Davis with Miyashiro would have been if Davis was injured.)

Speaking of which... if Davis wasn't getting the job done, why didn't Hugh switch it up and designate Myashiro as libero for the 3rd or 4th set? Am I wrong in believing that you can designate whoever you want to be libero at the beginning of the set? Internationally, the libero is designated not just for the match, but for the event. There are two ways that a libero can be replaced during the event. First, the coach takes advantage of the new rule allowing for a reserve libero to be designated for the event. If this is done then the libero can be replaced by the reserve libero during the event. Second, if there is no reserve libero, a new libero can be designated only if the original libero is injured and cannot continue. Hugh, along with almost every other coach*, did not name a reserve libero so Davis was going to be the libero for the event come hell or high water (but not injury). * Algeria (women), Turkey (women), and Italy (men) are the only exceptions. Olympic rosters can be found here: www.fivb.org/en/olympics/london2012/

Sent from my iPad using ProBoards app Do you think that was a "sentimental" sub as Sunderland suggested? He doesn't seem like a warm and fuzzy coach to me-I doubt it.

Am I wrong in believing that you can designate whoever you want to be libero at the beginning of the set? Miyashiro cannot switch to libero because she was designated as a regular player. Otherwise, she would have been wearing a libero uniform like Davis. Hugh chose to designate just one libero because he knew that if Davis became injured and unable to play, he could bring in Miyashiro as an exceptional replacement. Even USAV changed over this past season to following the FIVB libero rule of designating none, one, or two liberos for the match. No switching back and forth from libero to a regular player.

Are they playing two Libero rule in the Olympics? I didn't see any team dress two. Sent from my iPad using ProBoards app Yes they were. Turkey dressed two and there were 1-2 more teams... Not sure how useful it is though...

Is this Jack Hamann's blog? If so, I'm going to make some wild guesses (I haven't clicked the link): 1. He ripped Berg and Davis. 2. He thought Tama and Thompson should have been on the court. How'd I do? BTW, if he did state the above, that doesn't make any of it untrue, but Jack can be a bit predictable when it comes to UW players. You mostly got that right. He did a lot of second-guessing of a world-class coach (seems a bit early for that to me), and did say going to Thompson would be a positive move. Not so much about Miyashiro, though I guess sistahsledge noticed something I didn't. Yes, Jack Hamann can cheer for the home team at times. All in all there were enough criticisms that some of them HAVE to have been on target, right? But this is the time for shotgun critiques. We haven't stewed on it enough for critiques that have real insight, so it's time for those who feel comfortable with a few misses to fire a number of shots, and see what hits. It doesnt seem early at all. World class coach or not, the team choked on the biggest stage. The first place you look when that happns is the coach. Watching the match it was clear there were some subs that should have been made and werent (HODGE!!!!!!!!!) and he should be accountable for that. The US played well on occasion but basically had a free ride to the finals where they s++t the bed. The criticism is well-deserved

What is wrong with u people! we went undefeated during the tournament and smoked Brazil in the first set-and then, yes the wheels came off-but that had nothing to do with roster decisions or coaching-that was a team getting in quicksand-u blow a team out and lose a little focus-the other team plays better and u cant find your mojo-u start pressing because it went from easy to rough and all of a sudden you unravel-it happens in volleyball...I doubt that the rroster made any difference at all at that point Losing focus has everything to do with coaching

Unless you can actually get inside someone's head losing focus doesn't have "everything" to do with coaching.
