Ahrens is a hammer. I would think the Cal volleyball outlook is very bright. A LOT of good recruits coming next couple of years. There have been a number of good recruits that have cycled through the Cal program over the last few years. You can look down the roster in any given year and I think many would agree that, on paper, Cal is a tournament quality team, if not top 25. The recruiting for Cal simply is not the issue.

They haven't had a legit receiver-attacker and the setting has been subpar. Having some hammers and great middles can only take you so far.

I agree they have had some holes, and while I think it's completely fair to say that they haven't had the TEAM to be competitive with the top half of the Pac-12, I also think it's fair to say that their roster is, at the very least, built to not take losses to teams like Seattle U, Wisconsin Green-Bay, Air Force, Radford, Pacific (in some of those years), and West Virginia.

Although she's short (no shorter than 5'10"), she hits a heavy ball and can get up in addition to her solid reception and defense.

Their big problem was floor defense and serve receive. Alftin was their only 6rotation player and she was average in the front and back. Mima will fill a 6 rotation hole with quality front and back. With middles and setters coming in next year it should be a better season in 2017. Then another 6-rot OH and setter in 2018 plus now Ahrens. Should be some big improvements I think.

From what I have seen over the last few years, their biggest weakness is OH. They need at least two who can put the ball down regularly.

The many holes from the past few years: Passing - Kerr (L) was good and so was Blackwell (DS), but they needed 1 or 2 good passing outside hitters to stay in system. Outside/Opposite hitting - no real consistent threat. Sometimes we would be lucky if one or 2 of the OHs would have a good night, but rarely all 3. Tough when mostly out of system and the opposing defense is camping. Middle hitting - one of the brighter spots with Jordan/Vukasovic hitting 1's and Schonewise hitting slides Blocking - big big holes. Setting - tough when out of system most of the time and with limited bail out hitters. Defense - without the block, tough for the back row defenders. Also didn't help that the hitters all seem very sluggish in defense.
They have good players, but they need a couple ELITE players. They need more dynamic players with the quick twitch and ability to better the ball in all touches. Let's hope that someone surprises and the new recruits can fill some of the holes. They lost Jensen (S), Kerr and Blackwell (L/DS), Jordan and Leap (MB), but bring in Chandler and Potter (S), Anderson and Forte (MB), and Mirkovic (OH).
L/DS: Sr Gaby DeGuzman Jr Amanda Kirtley So Kat Knop
MB: Sr Caihla Petiprin Jr Belen Castillo Fr Preslie Anderson (from Aspire VBC) Fr Lauren Forte (from Aspire VBC)
OH: Sr Christine Alftin Sr Kristen Shekelle Sr Jessica Gaffney Sr Antzela Dempi RS Jr Ashten Smith-Gooden Jr Carmen Annevelink RS So Sanannah Rennie So Maddie Haynes So Bailee Huizenga Fr Mima Mirkovic (from Tstreet)
S: Jr Mackenzie Albrecht Fr Brynn Chandler (from Wave VBC) Fr Isabel Potter (from SPVB)
2018 Incoming Recruits Darian Clark - 2018 OH/DS (Club Team: AZ EVJ 16N1) Devon Chang - 2018 Setter (Club Team: A4 17 Purple) Isabella Bergmark - 2018 MB (Club Team: Absolute 16 Black) Rachel Ahrens - 2018 OH (Club Team: A4)

Depending on how you look at it, Feller is now either the 2nd or 3rd longest serving head coach in the Pac-12.
Launiere at Utah would be number 1 with 27 years, but most of those years Utah was not in the Pac.
Rubio is 2nd with 25 years (and at 479 wins, tops all active conference coaches).
Feller is 18 years (2 more years that Mick)
Those 18 years include:
12 consecutive postseason appearances. Seven 20-win seasons in the past 12 years. 6 NCAA round of 16 appearances.
But since that semi-final appearance in 2010, it's been a little thin at Cal.

Rennie only played as MB and Gaffney as a DS last year, but yes, still a long list of OHs.
Brynn Chandler de-committed from Cal and signed with Tom Black at Georgia for 2017. Interesting that Chandler played for Wave VBC before switching Coast VBC this year, and Cal picked up current Wave setter Jordyn Schuette in Chandler’s place for 2017. Updated roster for 2017.

Maybe a 6-2 to minimize the blocking liability and maximize the offense. Hoping they develop Alftin and Mirkovic's backrow attacks.
OH: Smith-Gooden (Alftin backrow) and Mirkovic (6-rot) RS: Huizenga, Haynes S: Potter, Albrecht (or Schuette) MB: Rennie, Castillo L: Gaffney DS: Kirtley
Haynes, Mirkovic, Huizenga, Potter, Rennie will be on the court. Haynes has the most upside. Need Mirkovic's all around play. Huizenga showed flashed of brilliance. Potter should be good coming from SPRI. Rennie's got fire.
