For 2014 recruits Shoji seriously has to look hard for a scholarship Libero to fill Longo's shoes. Among the redshirts, Sarah Mendoza, Tiana Ponce, Katie Spieler, and the DSs that played last year, I can't see any of them playing in that position at a top 10 team level. He will have 4 scholarships available as I assume that Kalei Greeley and Keani Passi will be on scholarship.

Sarah Palmer was not a good Libero as an incoming freshmen, so I really wouldn't say "she got away" But Shoji really can't control that Hawaiian girls want to get off the island

Maybe if they were offered a scholarship they wouldn't leave - you think? Fair point, but the question is who's scholarship do you pull to offer these players? If you want Palmer, you would have to give up a scholarship from another player. Also, Shoji had a libero on scholarship for most of the past few seasons. Kaaihue from 2007 to 2010 and Longo from 2012 to 2013. Do we really want another libero using a scholarship?

I would argue that with the exception of an AA type player (ie a Hartong, Danielson, Willoughby, etc) the libero has the biggest impact of any player on the court. We have seen the difference a good libero can make with the top teams. Being that Hawaii has traditionally been a defense-oriented ball control team, it would seem only natural that a scholarship be set aside each year for it.

Being that Hawaii has traditionally been a defense-oriented ball control team, it would seem only natural that a scholarship be set aside each year for it. I agree the libero is important and Shoji had a libero on scholarship except in 2011. Saying you give up a scholarship except for an AA type player is a bit after the fact. For example, Palmer is a 2010 recruit. Who do you give up? Satele, Hartong, and Uiato seem to be locks, given that they were starters at one time. You could argue Waber or Goodman, but you have to give them up before we know what their role would be. I don't see Hawaii fans being too happy at Shoji giving up the prospect of a 6'3 outside hitter or a strong 6'1 blocking opposite. The 2013 class may be a better example. Shoji has 2 scholarship (or seems to have 2 scholarship). If we want Kan, you give up Higgins or Taylor. Do we want to give up one of those players for Kan, knowing we'll have a senior libero on the court in Longo, who is already on scholarship.

Don't quote me on this, I've heard that Longo is not on scholarship and is receiving financial aid that is legal with the NCAA. Players for 2013 that will be on scholarships are Long, Goodman, Tuaniga, Kastl, Stauber, Vorster, Olevao, Uiato, Hartong, Croson, Higgins and Taylor. 6 of those players are seniors, two scholarships for 2014 would go to Passi and Greeley, so there's 4 left. As I was saying Shoji for 2014 should use one for a Libero. UH doesn't need another problem as in 2011 season with the revolving libero changes that Shoji had with Blake, Maeda and Griffy. The libero position has become more critical over the years. If you can't pass the serve you have less chance to be in system.

Lets not forget Tamari Miyashiro Yup, Tama was the ultimate snub. Roy, agree with you that Kan was the odd person out for 2013. Just hoping 1 scholie in 2014 is for a libero. Also, if Longo did not transfer Maeda would have been the libero for 2012 and everyone else would be fighting it out for the starting position in 2013.

i don't understand why you think not keeping tama here was a snub.
tama's intentions coming into college was never to be a libero, she wanted to set. however, we had a proven all-american and a backup who is more than capable of starting on any other div 1 team. would you prefer to have 3 setters on scholarship at the same time? plus, she wasn't even on scholarship at uw until jmac realized how much of a catch she had become.

I go back to the scholarship problem. Hawaii had 2 scholarships to give and got Jamie Houston and Sarah Mason. If you want Miyashiro, you sacrifice either Houston or Mason. Bear in mind, these two created the one-two punch that helped Hawaii beat Texas at Texas in 2005 and USC in the NCAA regional in 2006.

There are always a few players that ride the bench their entire time at UH, yet get the schole ride. I'm sure we could put a great libero on scholarship if made a priority.
