On one hand I'm a bit surprised by this but as I've learned the past few years you're back row is every bit as important as your front. And we've already got plenty of talent there.

This is a comment by Jeff Huth who covers Illinois volleyball: Kevin Hambly's recruiting priorities in the Class of 2014 were Ali Frantti, who committed to Penn State, and Azariah Stahl, who committed to Purdue. He did recently get a commitment in the 2014 class from Brandi Donnelly, an outside hitter from Williamsville who is projected as a libero in college. Hambly has moved his recruiting focus past 2014 to future classes. I believe he has either three or four scholarships for the Class of 2015. So far, two of them have gone to setter Jordyn Poulter and outside hitter Beth Prince.

Hey Illini..an outside perspective. You seem to be reenforcing my opinion of Hambly..a heck of a nice guy..good coach..recruiter of 2nd level talent! In Lizs frosh year she was protected by two seniors in 2012 when they needed some leadership it took til end of season. I wrote earlier that shes good, but not a PSU type recruit. Most of you were so upset when PSUs MC got frosh of year. Illini HAD to rely on Birks too much..thus all of the kills. In the LIONS system the most important assignment for Courtney was to block..she got 32 solos..WOW! Anyone in the B1G get more solos? Besides being an outstanding talent that stat gets you a trophy..oh, & MC was just a freshman..WOW!
During 2011 the Illini rode two quality seniors to the title match..beat a squad of sophs & frosh LIONS twice for the first time in team history. This year at Huff you scared the LIONS so the the LIONS put things back in perspective at Rec Hall..what was it 21 consecutive points?! In conclusion..Kevins a nice guy..is he a tough coach? Previously Illini fans wondered if he could be tough like RR & JC? Its a TEAM sport the coach owes it to the team & fans to coach & prepare the team & then put the BEST players on the court..if some are freshmen they might get FOY like Megan, Micha, Deja, Darcy &......! Good luck. GO LIONS! !!!! Note: Q: do you remember who broke the LIONS string of FOY? hint..youll like the answer..the frosh label shouldnt matter!

So liz at #3, Dorn at #6, Birks #26, Crisswell #33, Villunas #34, Stark #53, Beltran #60 were all beneath RR radar? Yes PSU has had more success long term but to think PSU hasn't lost a few recruiting battles to Illinois then your VB knowledge is lacking. And if you don't think RR didn't want the #3 recruit in the country the 6'7" McMahon them you sir are an idiot. Plus the title of this thread is Illinois Volleyball. If you want to talk PSU VB there's about a thousand threads here you can post on. Hambly is a young coach when he has as much time under his belt as the rest - then compare .Ill agree there was no real leader on the court - which led to the inconsistencies but MC did not deserve FOY.....that was BS.She choked in the final matches, and I dont care what the stats are - momentum changing plays- she had none. Birks had similar attempts as Turner on Purdue - she had about 40 more kills then Birks - did they rely on her too much too? Your bias is ridiculous...they do have a Penn page ...go there.

Was it a slow nite on the xxx rated sites where you usually lurk? I am one of the fans that wonder if Coach Hambly is tough enough to make the difficult personnel decisions that need to be made to be consistently on top. I put Hambly more in the class of coaches with Jerritt Elliott. It always looked to me like Elliott had a benchfull of talent that he was trying to keep happy by constantly substituting. Fortunately, this year, one of the nice guy coaches actually took home the big prize. I believe as I have heard another coach say that a coach shows his love for his players every day in practice and outside of practice. But, the team culture needs to always exist that the best player plays regardless of seniority. I am a highly partisan Illini fan, and I would want my daughter to go to Illinois, and play for Coach Hambly. I admire Coach Hambly's life resume as well as his coaching resume. The father of two young daughters and being married to a former Illinois volleyball player, and just being a great guy and family man. Though I very much respect the coaching record of Russ Rose. I do put him in the coaching class of John Cook. And despite their good won-loss records, there is much more to the college volleyball experience than just winning or losing games on the court. And, just to be really snarky (a la lkwadlionvb)...if my daughter did choose to go to PSU, I would hope Russ Rose would spend a bit of his coaching time talking to the team about the dangers of diabetes and heart disease.

I certainly agree it's too early in Hambly's career to make valid comparisons to RR and JC. Long term wise they have two of the best records in upper D-1 VB. However I wouldn't lump them together personality wise. Have a tough time seeing RR pull some of JC's stunts.
I'd like to go a bit further in hoping that ALL schools would go further in teaching the various dangers of health disease. As I suffer from both problems myself I wish that more emphasis had been placed on what WILL happen if you don't take care of yourself.

My take on why Illinois' Jocelyn Birks did not win Freshman of the Year is because she is as yet not the complete player that PSU's Megan Courtney is. Birks has a very glaring weakness and that is serve receive. Perhaps, if she had been more successful in that area, she would have won FOY. A case could certainly be made for Birks.
Jocelyn was the most valuable player to her team of all the first year players. I would say that her offensive play exceeded all expectation, and all other freshman. If there was a freshman hitter of the year, she surely would have won that award. I also think it is easy for B1G coaches to fall back on giving the conference awards to PSU players. Once you get beyond PSU, I think coaches are more reluctant to give one of the other "striving eleven's" player an award (coaching envy, maybe).
Jocelyn should use this as a challenge for her remaining three years of play. IMPROVE YOUR DEFENSE, PARTICULARLY YOUR SERVE RECEIVE.
And, if you will just maintain your first year level of play at the net, the Illini Nation will be a happy bunch!

IMO the reason Birks didn't win it came down to one word -"redshirt". All it would have taken is a few voters who thought that a redshirt was not a "true" freshman and voted otherwise.
As you say because of it's "dominance" of the B1G voters look at PSU first then everyone else. I guess the answer is that other teams start beating them. Problem with that is that they outrecruit everybody every year. I'm waiting to see what happens when RR retires.
IMPROVE YOUR DEFENSE pertains to the WHOLE team not just Birks. Considering the whole back row, except Beltran, were first years that shouldn't be hard. They were already playing much better at the end of the year than earlier. Including Birks.

Coach Hambly was on a local radio station yesterday morning, discussing the upcoming Chop Chef event to raise money for the vb team's European trip. Coach would like to see 200 people at the event to fully fund the trip, but so far over a hundred have made reservations. This is an 18 minute radio program with Jim Turpin and Coach Hambly on "Penny For Your Thoughts": www.wdws.com/audio/2013-02-19/02-19-13-chop-chef-champaign-illinivbhambly.html
