i'm sure there is a thread about this, but the search engine doesn't seem to work.
what are the best high performance sand socks? vincere, sandskins or zemgear?
from what i hear, vinceres are awful and are just marketed more, sandskins are better than vinceres. i don't know about zemgears, are they better than the other two? they sure look like it.

This will be an interesting thread. I'm a shooter, so can't comment on sand sox for hitting/blocking, BUT, of course, I have an opinion. ANYTHING that solves 2 problems (heat/cold) probably doesn't solve ONE problem and thats my opinion on sand socks. For COLD, you should find wool or tightly woven biking socks or something that insulate (sand socks, the ones you've listed, do not insulate "much"). For heat, which probably by far the largest application for sand socks, white tightly woven bike socks probably work better than the items you mention, but look a bit "funky". At the last AVP events, SOCKWA was marketing some sand socks MUCH better, I thought, than anything on the market (Plus they had some velcro so getting in/out was MUCH easier). I ordered a pair recently but not sure their availability anymore....Interested in others' opinions....

sockwa don't seem too light. only reason why i didn't mention it, but thanks for your input! i really want to know about zemgears before i decide on getting sandskins or not.

For cold, we'd usually do sandsocks (of whatever type) with normal socks underneath. Also, for colder temps, some surf booties work ok. And yeah, the question "If it's that cold, why are you playing beach volleyball?" is legit.

I have only had vincere so I can't say what is better. I just know something is better than nothing. The only annoying part is people say it's too hot to play on sand in summer during day but also say they would never buy sand socks. I guess pride gets in the way

re: If its that cold, why play. Well, I think most Californian's are talking about the "sand temperature" and not the outside temp. Its not much different from hot: You play in heat, but the sand is the problem, not necessarily the temperature. Winter in Cali is not really "winter", its more of an "annoyance" than an actual "season". I mean if you're playing lunchtime and we do all winter long, it "ain't that cold" ESPECIALLY since you're exercising at the same time. 45-50 would be SIGNIFICANTLY cold at lunch....We play through that with no problem...high 30's, still "low level" problem....NOW, go to Toronto in February and, well, that river is frozen over, now THAT'S winter!

I guess pride gets in the way I don't hesitate to put on sand socks after I've seen someone go to the hospital with second degree burns all over their feet. Bad experience for them. I've also worn a sand sock for two months last season with a big toenail that was falling off. I've only had Vincere. They have boat socks that have harder bottoms and are better if you are playing in sand with a lot more broken shells and such.

In my experience Zem socks are better than Vincere for both hot sand and cold weather because of thickness. They also have better fit and better traction with separate big toe sleeve.
I've not used Sandskins or Sockwa so I can't comment on them.

The new Zem lace ups look ideal for traction, but they don't offer them in high top and I know getting sand inside the low tops would really annoy me.

I've played with Vincere and Sandskins. Consider Sandskins to be superior. The Sandskins' "rubbery" bottom gives more protection against hot sand. The elastic top on the Sandskins seems to fit more tightly, thus less sand works its way in. The fabric bottom of the Vincere definitely is less durable. If one walks on surfaces such as asphalt or concrete with the Vincere socks, holes soon follow. The Vincere models with the velcro on the tops let a whole lot of sand in.

Agree with Larry (sandskins vs. vincere)...still like Sockwa best (easy in/out), but they might be heavier like someone above said...BUT tightly woven white biking sox work better than any...just say'n...
