Doherty looks terrible against Belov/Roberts in Game 2. AS an added bonus Todd's body expressions look like he's compeltely fed up with him as well. Rogerslooks like he'd be a hard guy to play with.

Instead of flailing at the ball shot over you after the over set, i would turn run and dive. When your partner gives an over set and its not HAMMERED down in an instant you can make the effort play to run after the shot...i don't understand just watching it go over you and being like oh well...

Yea I agree. Watching Rogers for a few years he kind of has that look of "f--- this" when his partners aren't playing up to par and struggling. Instead of being the guy that makes a difference and brings his partners confidence back up it looks like he just quits on them. Doherty just looks like he was playing scared from Rogers for a while but has picked it back up.

Just got back from the tournament.
The "Old School" aspects of the MBO this year are a throwback logo and zero bleachers/stands. Seemed like really good crowds, although things were pretty spread out, hard to say what the attendance was. And the event is actually being run by IMG, not the AVP...it's complicated, apparently. And the AVP contract drama continues as well, big time. And walking around the venue holding court with a smirk on his face...Leonard Armato. There were some interesting dynamics going on today.
As for volleyball, watched Doherty/Rogers v Engle/Slick. I'm now trying to figure out how Todd/Ryan made the final in SLC. Engle lives in the mountains and barely plays any more, but he and Slick were just better - Slick certainly outplayed Doherty. Rogers was not amused, and was visibly angry with Ryan during the match. One positive is that Doherty has really improved his serve, but the rest of his game...I dunno. Maybe an off day?
I saw that BVBinfo showed Matt/Casey beating Keenan/Mayer in two - actually, Keenan suffered an ankle injury in the second game and had to retire.
I won't say that the volleyball today was always world-class - there were a number of male and female players noticeably out of shape, but there was a lot of entertaining volleyball, if that makes any sense. And any day I get to catch up a little with Hov is a good day.

Some its understandable etc..

I think to an extent a guy like Ryan is always going to struggle somewhat in real beach conditions (meaning wind) although a strong wind should get a bunch of blocks.
Watching him play Carlson and Dykstra (and Carlson looks like a middle aged sitcom dad) it was amazing that he wasn't blocking up a storm. I remember watching Whitty or Phil play teams like that and they seemed befuddled. Carlson in particular seemed to be playing his game. Ryan has to be a better blocker. Im not sure why he isn't. The jump is there (enough anyway) and it doesn't seem like a complex thing. I wonder if maybe Todd is trying to get Ryan to funnel the ball to him rather than letting him go for bug blocks.
Last week in SLC when Rosie was swinging hard it was always going down. Even if Ryan doesn't get a ton of blocks (and he should) he has to change hitters' thought process

If I'm playing Walter White, I'm losing. Just sayin.
Also: Good blocking is hard. Height and arms are not enough.

Here are my shallow, biased and narrow perspectives from the day:
First off, the weather was great for the players because the sun never really came out, but still a nice day. The set-up of the venue was standard except for the center court having no stadium, which was cool. The whole "throwback/retro" theme was ok. All it really was as GLM mentioned was a label and no stadium on center court. Also, they were playing cool 80's music. Don't want to be too critical but whoever was doing the MC/play-by-play for center court wasn't great...I'll leave it at that. I'd say the crowd by Manhattan standards was modest.
As far as play goes:
Fuerby/Casey looked really good today. I think a lot of people were thinking Fuerbs would be rusty and old, but, he in fact looked refreshed and spry. They destroyed Morrison/Olsen and Casebeer/McGuire. Matt had numerous blocks against Casebeer and they completely controlled that match. That Andrew kid can really get up for being really small but these small players seen so outmatched from a physical standpoint. Next up was Keenan/Mayer. Keenan had his ankle heavily wrapped to start off the match. Keenan hit quite a few balls out and Matt pretty much dominated him at the net. There were some really good rallies in which mostly went Matt/Casey's way. I'm always impressed with Mayer (the Sand Flea). He just doesn't seem to have any holes in his game. He doesn't make mistakes and he is really consistent. Too bad he's never got to play with a premium blocker. Keenan had to retire after Casey made a great dig, Matt made an even better up and the ball was put back short which forced Keenan to stretch awkwardly for it and I guess turn his ankle more. Same thing with Brad as usual though, he has a really good jump serve but too many other holes to his game. I hear over and over Keenan has all the tools but never trains hard enough and doesn't care much. I'm sure Casey/Matt will get rolled by Phil/Rosie tomorrow but I guess we'll see. Casey had numerous awesome digs and again, he and Matt looked to be in strong form.
Watched a little Mark Williamn/Rambis vs. Matt Olsen/Ed Ratledge. I've always been a big fan of Williams. He's smooth and consistent but of course couldn't make up for Rambis' play. I don't get all these short dudes that try to play (I know that sounds bad). I watched Rambis play some with Lambo and while I totally respect these smaller players and their skill level, it's just never going to happen for them. Yes, they can play on the elite level, but it will never translate into many meaningful victories. Matty O. is also another player who I've always liked. Same as Mark, he's really smooth, consistent and always in control. Olsen plays really good defense and it's fun to just sit back and watch him do his thing on defense. His focus is so strong. It was very apparent Mark and Matt were carrying their teammates.
Watched Rosie/Phil pretty easily dispatch of Olsen/Ratledge. It's just silly how high Phil gets and hits over people. It has to be somewhat discouraging to face him and have him just hit over you like it's nothing. Rosie looked good as usual as well. Rosie/Phil are both pretty mellow by nature so it can actually be a little boring to watch them at times both because they don't ever get too excited and they make it look so easy.
The Lucena/Brunner vs. Patterson/Gibb match was really tight and competitive. Nick was playing really good with a lot of fire. The first game had some incredible rallies. Gibb/Patterson had the first chance to put it away but failed to and then Nick/Brunner had a couple game points but also couldn't put it away. Gibb had two crucial blocks in a row to finally end it. That Brunner kid also hits the ball really high. Patterson just plays great all the way around and is another very consistent player. It is a little disappointing Fuerbs retired because Nick's game is still improving and they would've been really strong this year.
I had no interest in watching Rogers at all. I did glance over several times to see Doherty making some mistakes and seeing Todd mope around and pout. It's just unbearable to watch that guy. I wanted to watch Wachtfogel, I really liked his game but never got a chance to see him.
I don't watch women too much and I'm sorry if this comes off as sexist but I don't find the women's game very entertaining other than looking at some of the good looking players. It's hard to watch the women not be able to put a ball away. I know a lot of people like the women's game because of that, and they claim it's fun for watching the long rallies, but to me it's like watching paddy-cakes back and forth all day long.
Overall, a great day for some volley. I'd be surprised to see anyone take down Phil/Rosie. I think Gibb/Patterson will handle Hyden/Bourne. Good luck to Matt/Casey against Phil/Rosie, that's going to be tough. Don't know how Keenan/Mayer will be able to play tomorrow so should be a free pass or easy win for Allen/Halverson. I hope Ratlegde/Olsen destroy Rogers. I'll take Nick/Brunner over Brazao/Baxter and the Engle/Slick Wachtfogel/Prosser match shold be tight.

I think Engle/Slick will have a tough time with Aaron and Matt, Engle looked gassed against Hyden/Bourne. Tough playing 4-5 matches a day when you haven't been training much. He wasn't the only one out there bent over holding his knees, either.

Fun day in Manhattan Beach. Walked around a lot and saw lot's of partial matches. Two young females that stood out to me were Lane Carico and Alexa Strange. Both have great Volleyball physiques, cover a lot of ground and hit hard. I look for big things from both of them in the near future....suspect Strange will be challenging for NCAA titles at SC and I don't think there is a better young US player other than Summer Ross than Carico.

I look for big things from both of them in the near future....suspect Strange will be challenging for NCAA titles at SC and I don't think there is a better young US player other than Summer Ross than Carico. The one match I saw her play (a loss), Strange melted down. Her partner, Dykstra, was more impressive. That said, Alexa has a ton of talent and should only get better. Carico is already scary good, and only 23. She can be world-class. On the men's side, keep the name "Robbie Page" in mind. Not now, but 3-4 years down the road. 20-21 years old, 7'0" and a ton of pontential. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Diane DeNecochea was remarkably good for not having played in three years and being 45. Unfortunately, her partner (Brook Niles) was laboring in a heavy knee brace and didn't look near 100% after knee surgery, not to mention having a baby.
