No, Loyola is the real deal. Everyone else is a pretty good deal. No one can match up with them physcially. If a team is to beat them, it will be an aggresive ball control team who can extend rallies and make the big guys handle the ball. They will have to serve tough to keep the youth national team from dominating the middle and to make the outsides hit from less than ideal spots. Loyola will get their blocks and Schkud will get his kills. They have yet to play a 5th game, and that is when they may be vulnerable. However, don't expect them to be extended to that in the playoffs, while the team they play in the finals may have to play one or more 5 game matches. Everything is going their way.

Loyola, on paper, is probably the best HS team in the nation. Stacked with National Team players. Quietly though Buchannan HS from Clovis has been making its mark on the scene. Some confusion on the net about who won the Las Vegas Tournament. It was Buchannan over Valencia in two. BHS is borderline at oppo, OK at setter... otherwise strong in remaining positions. Two good MBers for HS, good bookends at OH. Wiens in particular is a gifted jumper, swings hard, passes with the best. MVP of the Vegas Tourny. He was UCSB's top recruit. BHS had 4 All-tourny players at Vegas. I think they're going to Santa Barbara TOC. Will be fun to watch all the strong teams there.

Mira Costa loses in four to Peninsula. Upset of the year so far.

goes to show how quickly things can change in one year. Costa went from dominating league last year to beating redondo in 4 and then losing to Penisula in 4. While costa is still a good team, there not nearly as good as they were the past two years. it doesn't look like a 3 peat will be happening.

HB v. Fountain Valley was the best match. HB in 5. Looks like FV will be the Sunset #3 team and will provide a tough early round test for CIF. On Friday the best match will be OC#1 San Clemente @ Mission Viejo, also a top 10 team. Last time they met SC won in 5 behind Brett Simpson's 31 kills. MV features Jared Dayton, one of this class' best athletes. MV beat Sunset's #1 team Esperanza in the OC championships. Game time is 6pm.
