She'll play. Just not a certainty or even a probability that she'll start. She'll get her chance to win a spot in the cauldron, however. There's not a probability that she could start? Try again. She'll start all four years for UW. Not what I said. Is it probable that she'll start? No. Is it possible that she'll start? Yes.

Knowing the history of the development of middles at UW, I think she'll have some hurdles to get over. There's more to it than just jumping with your hands up. Wade is also a very good server and, for a middle, a pretty good backrow defender.

Thoughts on Scambrey starting on the outside?

If Tanner plays at OPP/S, then I see Nelson likely moving to OH2, where she and Scambray would compete to start. Tanner at OPP/S saves two subs, which could be used to sub in the backrow for Nelson at OH2 - that sub could be Scambray, who could also rotate to the frontrow if Nelson is having an off-match.
If Tanner only sets backrow (or sits out), Nelson would stay at OPP, with Scambray at OH2.

It will be interesting to see what the team looks like with the freshmen additions plus DeHoog and Tanner! I was just thinking about Cassie..hey, if she has aspirations of playing on the national team, then libero would obviously be more likely.

I love Cassie as a player but I don't see her on the National team, particularly at libero. There's this player named Natalie Hagglund out there...

Agreed. Hard to transition to pure defense when you are used to the glory of hitting and blocking. Not that she couldn't. But, Natalie has been impressive so far on WNT.

Thoughts on Scambrey starting on the outside? If she ends up being the best passing OH, very good.

Tanner setting in a 6-2, regardless if its all 6 rotations or just back row has little to nothing to do with whether or not Nelson is playing OPP. Identifying the strongest and most consistent passing rotation with the players available is the most important. This is why Strickland started at OH the last two years and the ONLY reason why Strickland started at OH the last two years. If Jim is going with a 6-2, that forces both OH's to be primary passers. Nelson only gets moved to the OH if she's earns that spot with her passing, no ifs ands or buts about it. If Jim goes with a 5-1 that all but cements Nelson on the RS as she's the most seasoned commodity on the right. Sure Dehoog has potential as a 6'4 lefty, and Tanner can swing there if she wants, but are they going to beat out a senior Nelson? I don't think so. If they were THAT good, they would have played last season. Frankly, I thought Beals looked a little weak last season. There were TWO things that I pin point the most for why UW couldn't make that big push to the title (including struggling against Stanford and Cal late in the season). 1- The setting inconsistency and 2-Strickland's backcourt play. Beals' sets often were too far off the net and inside for the OH's to real take quality swings. And her connection with the middles resulted in far too many whiffs. I know Strickland is praised for the backcourt tenacity, BUT starting around mid November she made, IMO, far too many passing and defensive errors. I saved every UW match on DVR and have rewatched them all. A key to UW's success was essentially having two libero's on the court in the back row, well in the second half of the season if I were to give Strickland a libero grade it would be a C, and we needed it to be somewhere in the B+/A- range to really challenge. We shall see what his year brings. Personally I'd like to see Vansant and Scrambray on the OH, Strickland at Libero (hopefully she gets back to her pre mid-season form) and Nelson and Dehoog on the RS. I think this would bring a nice balance of all court players and difference offensive looks (especially with a lefty on the RS). Frankly I don't really care who sets, they just need to set better than what Beals was giving us for most of last year, and once the setting consistency is better, the best middles will really shine.

Jones has been playing on the outside all season for T-Street. If Jim was planning on keeping her in the middle, that's where she'd be now. I don't have any inside info, but I would assume that she's going to play on the left or right in college, which I think is a good call in the long run. However, Scambray and Schwan are ahead of her. I don't see her as a four-year starter.

How about: OH: Vansant, Nelson (Scambray) MB: Wade, Jones OPP: DeHoog, Sybeldon L: Strickland (Condie) S: Beals, Tanner (Finau)
