How about: OH: Vansant, Nelson (Scambray) MB: Wade, Jones OPP: DeHoog, Sybeldon L: Strickland (Condie) S: Beals, Tanner (Finau) No, I don't see that happening. Scambray will be UW's OH2. I've said his before, but she's a perfect fit for that position. Schwan is also very good and is going to push her for playing time, but Scambray will ultimately take that spot. Nelson is more comfortable on the right than on the left and that's where she'll say. I would also argue that Sybelson was their best middle last year so I don't know why you'd move her to the right. Has she ever even played there? And even if she has, do they even have the personnel to run a 6-2? I've never seen Tanner play so I can't comment on her ability as a setter, but from what I've read on this board, it sounds like she hasn't been healthy in over a year. I wouldn't hold my breath on her. The most likely scenario is that Beals runs a 5-1.

I'm deferring somewhat to returning starters, but that doesn't mean it will stay that way. Tanner had surgery on her foot early this spring, which is why she wasn't involved in sand or spring indoor. That leaves plenty of time to heal. She's been on the shelf for awhile, so I could see them focusing on just setting for awhile, plus that helps minimize the chance of re-injury. The roster has been built for the 6-2, so I don't see them going away from it. Finau has a year of training, plus Meyer-Whalley (coming in) set in high school and club.

My thought was that Tanner could set backrow if her mobility isn't significantly restricted, even if her jumping is restricted. That could lead to: OH: Vansant, Scambray (Schwan) MB: Sybeldon, Wade (Jones) OPP: DeHoog, Nelson (Jones) L: Strickland (Condie) S: Beals, Tanner (Finau) Wade is not playing before Jones. Jones has looked good on the right in the T-street I've seen (though I defer to some SoCal people who have doubtlessly seen her much more than me), so I think she is a good contender there. Has anyone seen anything of DeHoog recently to line her up as a starter? I don't know if Sybeldon/Jones in the middle will be enough blocking for JMac. Wade definitely has the advantage on defense.

Yes, I would think JMac would be more likely to run a 6-2 with the team he has. IMO Beals would have to be a really strong setter, obviously having a very good connection with the middles to be able to win the sole setter role.

I "pencilled" in DeHoog at OPP for a couple reasons. She's a lefty, so she was recruited specifically to play that position, plus, at 6'4", she allows UW to go big. Whether big is as good as quick, of course, is an eternal debate. If Tanner hits and sets, they could use the two saved subs to play three middles, or sub backrow for Nelson (if she ends up at OH2). I do agree, however, that Jones' future is probably on the outside. The traffic jam in the "outside" lane will clear significantly once Vansant and Nelson graduate.

Sybelson has never played right. Some OH in HS and early club. Definately more comfortable at MB.

Don't worry - you weren't the first.

Sybeldon is a great middle. I'm sure she'll play, and I'm sure that's where she will play.
My guess is that they will continue with a 6-2, not so much because of anything else other than the fact that they will have so many hitters and the 6-2 allows them to get as many as possible out on the floor.
But clearly some good players are not going to be starting, which is a much better position for the team to be in than to have to start players who aren't so good.

Don't worry - you weren't the first. Actually, I cut and pasted from a previous post. There lies the error.

Krista Vansant wasn't a top three finalist for the Honda Collegiate Woman Athlete Award. The 2014 winner is Kim Jacob, an outstanding gymnast, from the University of Alabama. Roll Tide!

In the discussions regarding the highly regarded Washington's 2014 freshman class, Courtney Schwan has lately taken a back seat. In my opinion, she will capably compete for one of the OH position not held by Krista Vansant. She is currently a starter for the 20 and under USA Women's Junior National Team. The first two matches were against weak opponents, but the next match (tomorrow) will be more competitive against the Dominican Republic.

Starting at OH2, but most the offense going through Hodson (OPP), Smith (OH), and Alhassan (MB). A lot will depend on whether Tanner sets and hits (or only sets) in a 6-2. If she does, Nelson, DeHoog, Scambray, Schwan, and possibly Jones will be in a battle royal for two starting spots.
