Mediocre after that? What does that make Pacific, who they easily beat twice? What does that make CSUN who was soundly beaten by uci during their "mediocre" play. How exactly did a Stanford team everyone was ranting and raving about lose to such a mediocre team?
They had about a 3-4 week period where they struggled, the last month of the season they were playing great, and I'm a little sick of so many people saying they were trash after the first Hawaii game and have never recovered.

Eater...considering their 5th place finish after being number 1...i would consider them and #6 pacific to both have had mediocre seasons AS FAR AS THE MPSF is concerned. I understand that UCI had the best year in program history, and so did UOP. But that doesn't put a ring on either program's finger. In the MPSF, both teams were dead average. And there's nothing wrong with being average in the MPSF... UOP has NEVER been dead average, we've always been worse.
Just because both programs had the best years in their schools history doesn't put them among the best teams in the country.

I agree...I don't think Speraw ran away with it like some people think. Irvine won some big matches early but then were mediocre in the MPSF after that... However, if someone told me that there was a 3-way tie for COY...I would have thought Speraw would be 1 of them. Wortmann and Peterson have had their teams for more than 1 year and in wortmann's case, has grown his team from scratch. He's got a lot of years ahead of him. Maybe some of the other coaches felt it might be beginner's luck. I completely agree. Speraw did a great job and was deserving of the award, but there are also great arguments for the coaches that did win the award. And it is especially surprising that out of the tri-COY, he was not one of them.

I have a friend who is a friend of someone on the UCI team and I heard Speraw was really angry at the votes. He thought he deserved it and someothers told him they were going to vote for him but they didn't at the last minute. Tells you mens vb is full of backstabbers and liars and cheaters. That's whatt I heard. He's young. He shouldn't lose any sleep over it (if indeed he really does care that much). I know a few great coaches who rarely, if ever, get C.O.Y. awards.

I heard the vote was taken in Florida! Speraw started with a bang and limped into 5th place. UOP and Northridge both were surprises. The finishes by both UCLA and LBSU were disappointing. BYU Hawaii and Pepp were steady all year. Speraw shouldn't be so angry, he'll get another shot at it next year, just like everyone else.

Who said Speraw is angry? Anyone who knows Speraw knows that he doesn't get angry very often and this certainly wouldn't make him "angry". Get over yourself and the gossip. Speraw has alot of respect for his fellow coaches and their winning of the award. He may be disappointed but he certainly is not "angry".
