Why so many 1 unit days - especially if UW is not in school yet. I doubt that the Badgers will only be practicing once on those days>>>

Obviously if they don't have class, they'll have doubles or whatever, but the bylaws tell you which days to count single and which days to count double. I showed my work and tried to illustrate the thought process for you.

Somebody should build a calculator app for this.

Division Three has something like that on their NCAA portal. I think you plug in your first date of competition your schools, start date, and it spits out the first day of practice for you.

In 2014 there's been a change in the start date for the University of California campuses this fall to avoid conflicts with religious holidays. This only impacts the UC campuses on the quarter system, which includes several Big West schools. Cal is on the semester system and not affected by this schedule change. The first day of instruction is very late - October 2nd. newsroom.ucla.edu/stories/ucla-and-other-campuses-adjusting-249857So this should push back the August official practice start dates a week, true?

Not always. Your start date is determined by this bylaw first. 17.24.2 Preseason Practice - Women. A member institution shall not commence practice sessions in women's volleyball prior to the date that permits a maximum of 29 units (see Bylaw 17.02.11) prior to the first scheduled intercollegiate contest (excluding the early alumni match) or September 1, whichever is later. If the first scheduled contest occurs before September 1, the institution shall count back one practice unit for each day (excluding Sundays) from September 1 through the date of the first scheduled contest. Thereafter, the institution shall apply the formula as prescribed in Bylaw 17.02.11. No mention of the 1st day of class. 1st day of class applies only as to if we count double or single units. It is never explicitly used a start point.

9/1 is Labor Day, it doesn't count cause y'all don't have class.

9/1 is Labor Day, it doesn't count cause y'all don't have class. That isn't true. Where in those bylaws does it say to not count days without classes? That being said, I can't tell by the wording in the rules whether September 1 is ever counted. Regardless, a Sunday can never be the first allowable practice day since Sundays aren't counted when counting practice units. Purdue's first date is either Saturday, Aug 9th or Monday, August 11th. I'm guessing it's the 11th, but the 10th is their report date when they move into dorms, have meetings with staff, etc.
