Sometimes it is a good idea. If the coach thinks a change is needed, there's no harm in trying it as long as it ain't USC and you have fairly strong conference schedule. Sometimes freshmen don't get a chance to break into the skill positions. Of course there was a few years ago when I thought there were too many freshman setters setting but this year is probably another reloading year where the ballhandling and setting will get ugly but eventually they'll become core of yet another solid volleyball class.

Nebraska's setting is still very weak. Her sets to the Middle are just BAD. However, she made many nice saves & and only had 2 service errors tonight.
MU's setter, Hunter, is fantastic!! Nebraska made a big mistake not going after her. I was very impressed with the 2 girls from China. The OH could be outstanding.

Andrews -a sitting sophmore setter at Texas- Moriarity in- what does it mean for Christiansen? , an outside hitter who was so aligned with Andrews during the recruiting process. Only the mind of Coach Elliot can tell - with this weak opening pre conference schedule and opening conference game with Baylor it is a guess. A lot of frosh setters are staring around the country -can they last? I am not exactly sure what you mean by this because Christian was being recruited with Moriarty. And the choice of Moriarty over Andrew will last for this season and until Andrew leaves. Dont expect to see her hit the court too much again. Also, get the names right when you post.

I wish Cook would try Lynch.
When Busboom does set good to the middles, they pound it, but that is few and far between.
To be fair, many sets are from the 10' line due to poor passing!

The frosh (calling her that because I don't want to spell her name wrong, even when supporting her) is far superior to Andrew. Quicker, more fluid offense, better communicator and even attempting to be a leader as a frosh, oh yeah location is better too. The block will suffer, as long as JE can massage Andrew's ego and keep her ready to play he can switch back to a 6-2 whenever that becomes an issue. Christian will probably lose some PT due to this but overall it is a move that you could see coming even in the preseason matches as the assists and PT were not exaclty evenly distributed.

I dont know why you guys think Christian will lose PT. I think she has started most of the matches already and I dont know who would start in front of her, as it seems that Acevedo has been playing a lot of right side. So there are not any other OH's to replace Christian. I dont really consider Galler or Curtis options to replace anybody.

Busboom is struggling although she did look better towards the ends of games two and three. I'm guessing Lynch must not be able to go hard at every practice and their biggest fear is tempo changes with her and Dani and then Michelle getting hurt. My feeling is if she can't go then she needs to go on medical scholarship and NU recruit a juco setter for next year that can challenge Busboom. In Busboom's defense it is very hard as a setter to learn the position when you team does not pass the ball consistantly to the same place on the court. I am very disappointed in McCormick. She got aced more than anyone else and can only seem to dig balls that are hit very close to where she is standing. Hunter is amazing, she looked like she was hurting physically in game three although it certainly did not affect her play. I agree with John Cook in his assessment that if Mizzou is the 5th place team in the conference then wow what a fun season this will be to watch from a fan perspective. Best of luck to the Nebraska Tigers!!!

So is it wide open in the Big 12 or is it Nebraska playing King of the Hill? I think that Nebraska, Kansas State and Texas A & M are frontrunners but Missouri and Texas look extremely talented. Could be a big time dogfight. Any Big 12 matches on TV this year?

I have to disagree with some of the posting above on the NU-Mizzou match last night. I was not only at the match last night but tonight I also watched the tape I made from last night. Busboom may not be in the great category yet be she definitely has improved bunches over last year. Busboom definitely wasn't setting from the 10 foot line all night. In fact she had very few sets from that far back. NU's passing still may not be the best but it is getting better and the setting will keep getting better as the hitters and Busboom get more used to playing together. Hitting .331 for a match is a pretty good indicator that there was some good passing and setting going on. The much more ballyhooed setter from MU only had 39 assists while Busboom had 50. That's not bad for a terrible setter. Who was setting Elmer last night? She hit .455 for the match. Stalls did only hit .267 but Busboom and Stalls are getting much better playing together all the time. Stalls is at least hitting with some power on most of her shots now as compared to the matches against ND where the timing was worse as Stalls just wasn't able to hit with any power at all most of the time.
Sure as a pure setter Hunter is the better setter but there is no comparison in overall athletic talent. Busboom is much better. Coach Cook has often stated he would love to have Hunter at NU but NU wasn't recruiting for setters that year and Busboom and Lynch and already had been recruited as a setter. If NU had taken Hunter who wouldn't be on the team now? Pavan or Stalls? One of them probably wouldn't be on the team as there wouldn't have been a scholarship for one of them. There's no way Cook would recruit a juco setter next year. With the talented Rachel Holloway coming in '06 there is no need to have another setter on the team.
McCormick isn't perfect but most of the time she has been very good. She didn't make the all-tournament team last weekend for no reason.
Coach Cook only had good things to say about the match except for doing better at serve receive last night when he was on the radio after the match.

I have also watched the majority of the Nebraska games. I can see improvement, but they still have issues that must be dealt with if they wish to compete at the end of the season.
Dani Busboom is getting better. Her best sets are the balls to the left side and the slide to the middle hitters. She is still having a great deal of difficulty setting the middles when they come in front of her (quicks and 31's). Her back sets are still very inconsistent which makes it difficult for Pavan to get any consistency. Her back court sets are getting better, but the consistent location still needs to be worked on.
The Huskers are having a terrible time blocking the slide, but this is the same problem that every team I have watched has.
Their libero is very inconsistent. On most top teams, the libero is the best passer and defender, but this is not the case on the Huskers. As a matter of fact, there are times that she has had to be hidden. This is not a good sign.
Finally, I believe that their backcourt defense is still a bit of a problem, though getting better. The middle back defender is not doing a good job of covering the seams in the block (from both sides) and still hides behind the block when the block is closed. No one should be getting a clean kill when Stalls/Pavan or Elmer/Pavan have put up a closed block.
If the Huskers can fix these four problem, and they are fixable, I believe that they will be in Long Beach is December.

On McCormack--getting aced 5 times is not good, BUT I didn't see her play in the other matches other than FAMU. I don't see her making great plays, I see her making great digs out of balls hit really hard right at her. I just think your libero should be your best defensive player on your team. She is not ours, Saleamua is. I predict she will be in that role next year when Jordan Larson arrives if Houghtelling continues to improve. On a juco setter, if Lynch cannot go hard in practice because of her injury then NU needs a backup setter that can step in and compete. If Busboom would get hurt they would be seriously screwed. If Lynch went on medical scholarship there would be a one year scholarship open. I agree on the circumstances on Hunter getting away and hind sight is always 20/20. Busboom is the better athlete, Hunter is the better setter at this point. On the hitting %, one should note that the middles got most of their kills running slides, not hitting anything quick in front of the setter. Busboom sets a decent slide ball. This is my concern where Busboom is concerned--We can't seem to run anything fast in front of the setter at this point, nor do we try much. If we could establish a middle attack in front of the setter, Pavan would have an absolute field day hitting when she is front row. Consistant passing would definately help for Dani. I do think she(Dani) has improved, I just look at the looks on Pavan and Stalls faces after they hit, granted I don't know them personally or have I seen them enough to know if that's just their game faces but I think I see lots of frustration at times with them. I've also been told by a former grad ass't that no one works harder at practice than Busboom---so I will be Dani Busboom's biggest fan if and when she gets to the level that a top 5 D-I program needs in setting. I thought Nebraska looked like a different team against Mizzou in terms of improvement. A much improved Big 12 this year will help season NU for the post season.
