Quick video from the Badger's practice at the Pav.
Romana's practicing, and I don't see the compression stocking on her surgery leg anymore. Maybe we see her tonight? Though I would think that if she is at all iffy, save her this weekend and play her next weekend, when we'll need everybody at elevation in Colorado.

Deme was a rock-star in her incredible role in helping the Badgers to the NCAA Championship match. She was so impressive all-season long. Remind me what Louisville did. Not about to be critical of Maya. That would be absurd. But trust me, Deme was the heart of Badger VB. Deme wasn't the reason Wisconsin was successful in the postseason. Lauren was the reason. Deme was a weakness as a blocker, passer, defender, and attacker all season long. Her worth was not measured by her effectiveness executing those skills. That is a big exaggeration. Deme was a weak block and not a perfect passer, but I'm not sure she was bad. She often passed in a two receiver formation. If that = weakness, so be it. She was not as good as Hickey, but I didn't see her served off the court. Her defense was more than okay. She got a lot of balls up and I don't recall her ever being targeted. Block, hitting, not amazing. I would argue that no one was a stand-out hitter until end of season and then it was only Chapman and Thompson. The occasional two ball to Thomas out of the middle, but THAT was it for terminators. Weakness means worse than others and she was not significantly worse in any of those skills other than blocking. That DOES NOT mean I wouldn't want an upgrade there, but weakness is going too far.

I agree with pelcj11. I will have to admit up front, I didn't watch every Wisconsin's game last season, 4 during the season and post season, but knowing somewhat about the sport, the Badgers did well because they had a very good setter who was able to make their hitters better. The team would not have been as good if the setter from the previous year was still setting. Large contribution, but defense, serving and chemistry was where it was at.

You have to have that as a team and they did. But having a very good setter dramatically helps.

My question for today - will Fricano and Bates see action?

She definitely got better and put in a ton of work, and contributed more intangibly than tangibly IMO, but her passing, blocking, attacking, and defending were absolutely weaknesses for Wisconsin all season and were targets for all their opponents. She only passed in three of her rotations, and with all of the injuries, the staff had no choice but to leave her in the back row for defense. There's an article somewhere where Sheffield says that her passing/defending were her weakest skills, and there's not a whole lot of room for a 5'7" kid in the DI game without those skills, which she worked very hard to improve. You seem to be focusing very hard on the word, "weakness."

Ok, you two (you know who you are). Sheffield said he is done talking about 2013 season. How about you do the same?
This is, after all, a 2014 MATCH thread.

I have been going regularly for 13 years and I have never referred to the Sports Pavilion -- and I don't think I've heard anyone else refer to the Sports Pavilion -- as "the Pav." Is this a thing?

Yes, people call it "The Pav." They used to call it "the hockey arena they turned into a bad* volleyball venue" but that was a mouthful.
I want to know if it's possible to get inside now. They had it practically sealed off when I went over there for the scrimmage. I thought I was going to need a parachute drop.
*"bad" being relative here. It's still better than most.

Yes, people call it "The Pav." Gotcha. I will return to hating the term in silence.
