I think this match shows a pretty good gap right now between UW and Minnesota. It is early however. Not hugely surprising, since one team has one new starter and one has four -- and it's the first match of the season.

I don't remember Nelson doing slide attacks last year. She's done a few these two matches. They ran her on slides quite a bit as the season ended, usually in serve-receive.

Funny...maybe because Dominique was so effective I only remember her doing them. Seemed like Nelson was doing them as much as Thompson through these two games.
Then again, I don't get to watch that often, being in NY. It may have just been the matches I caught.

It was a pretty impressive performance from Wisconsin. For the most part, every time Notre Dame got something going, the Badgers had an answer for it. The blocking was better than against Louisville, the passing was pretty solid, and Carlini has the offense clicking. The sets to Chapman are noticeably quicker, but they still seem to be connecting well. The Badgers also served a ton better than Notre Dame did today, missing fewer serves despite getting more aces and causing more disruption. They can bring a lot at you from the service line, and it caused the Irish a lot of problems. Otherwise, it was a really nice match for Wisconsin. They did a lot of good things, but they also had a bit of a let up at one point in the second set it seemed and missed some opportunities, so that will give them something to work on preparing for next weekend. It was good to get two sweeps and to get all the players on the floor in the process, with the exception of Kriskova, who they don't need to rush back. I have to say that Bates is better than I expected at this point, although she needs to be more consistent with her passing. The first two passes she shanked this weekend conveniently went to Thomas, who again showed her worth in keeping the team in system with good sets. While I don't think she is at the level Dolgner was at the same point in their careers, I do see some similarities in terms of power and explosiveness from similar frames. I am not sure Bates has the offspeed hitting ability Dolgner did yet, as she mostly hit hard and harder this weekend, but I thought she held her own overall and showed a lot of potential. The match experience can only help her development.

They did, although her attacks were very limited from anywhere on the court. Glad to see she's improved and is getting more swings. Granted, it's not against BIG TEN opponents, but good nonetheless.

Sheffield singled Haleigh out as being very improved in his presser...something like "a different player to last year" in practice. She definitely seemed more mobile. Will be interesting to see if that comes out regularly in competitive games.

Lauren also singled Haleigh out in a Varsity interview as a player who was going to have a breakout season, based on how she's been working to improve all aspects of her game.

As if Nelson working hard and showing improvement is something new? I can't remember any Badger who improved more over a course of a season than she did last year.

Agreed. I think she was originally a recruit that Sheffield expressed concerns about coming in (although never directly stated).
She looks like she lost a little weight, perhaps that contributed to the improved quickness.

I don't think anybody - including Nelson - thought she would start until Blake got concussed in practice. But Blake hasn't won the starting spot back from Haleigh, which says something. I was simply commenting that LC specifically called out that she thought Haleigh was going to have (another) breakout season.
