With just 1 AVP, and 1 FIVB left here are some of my thoughts heading into the off-season: #1 Ross/Day - Do they see a need to change it up? are there better options for these players? Could Ross make a play for Fendrick? All excellent questions. Day and Ross absolutely need to break up. They achieved nothing this year. Ross could not make a play for Fendi because, barring a renewed interest in sprint training, Summer needs to be matched up with speed. Lane is the obvious choice there. #2 Men's top 5 teams stay or go? - at some point throughout the year, all 5 teams have been discussed about what is best for each of them A. Casey/Jake - They have cleaned up on the AVP, but only 1 FIVB medal. Both have looked better in earlier years Should split but due to this AVP success probably wont. I expect a strong run in Brazil with their confidence bolstered C. Tri/John - probably the most steady team with only 2 of 10 finishes on the FIVB outside the top 10 with 6 of their first 7 coming from the Q. I think the season has worn this team down a bit, Hyden's 1st full FIVB season since 2002 and Tri's 1st full season ever. Question of this team, does John want to make the push for the Olympics? If No, who does Tri call? Tri should call Ryan Doherty. Doherty doesnt need an all world defender and this would ease Tri's transition to D. Also at times this year, Ryan has looked like he will be dominant. If he keeps improving, he is going to be the one everyone fights over D. Nick/Ryan - I think they did about as good as the probably could this year, made it out of Pool in 8 of 9 FIVBs including 2 podiums. Their worst losses on the AVP were to Casebeer/Jennings (not too bad), both of those stats show an improved consistency level throughout a full season. Question is if Tri called, would Nick move on? There is no way Nick moves on from Ryan for anyone other than Phil. D. Theo/Todd - team did decent, the only tournament they didn't get out of pool on the FIVB, they didn't make it through the Q. The last 2 AVPs, got a 9th & 13th. The question remains if Todd is wanting to hang it up? Wasted year for Theo. Should have gone with Casey Jennings. Would love to see him with Trevor Crabb#3 Laura & Brooke - pretty good year, everyone assumes they'll stay together, but many thought that last year with Fopma and Brooke. Fendrick should go with Lane, as should Fopma. Sweat is tenacious and great, but she is the best she is going to be#5 Men's next level - Players like Casebeer, Slick, Jennings, Adrian & Crabb. These guys are good enough to get to the Semis, can they find the right partner to over the hump? Can any of them push into the top 4 FIVB teams?? Movement by the top 5 teams will affect this group of players the most, both good and bad. Would love to see Crabb move up in quality of partner. Not sold on Casebeer. Not sure why, just dont see it yet#6 Young bloods - both genders saw some infusion of young players, are any of them going to make the full time commitment to the beach? Can any of them have a top 4 team effect?? The quantity of players under 25 who made main draws was large, but what is the true quality of these players? At MB, on the women's side 10 players 25 or younger finished top 13, 6 on the men's side. You can surely see the effect that NCAA sand (and JRs for that matter) on the women's side. The Boys Junior is growing too, just not as fast as the women's which I don't think anyone is surprised. Trevor Crabb seems like the first young male player, other than Tri, to really show world class potential. He and Theo, or he and Jake Gibb would be interesting teams

I also watched Drost/Tramblie a bunch too, caught myself comparing Avery and Trevor. Both really good players, I just thought they were a touch below Tri's athleticism and size. Amazing, that both have had top 5 finishes. I believe Crabb can make the transition to a Def. player pretty seamlessly. Smart kid, it appears he has the individual drive. I'd like Theo and Crabb as well, hire Todd to coach.

Would love to see him with Trevor CrabbWanted to address this one, and kind of take it to its own tangent. I Do not believe it was a wasted year for Theo. A whole year with Todd is some of the best training and preparation habit building any player could have. In fact, I'd propose Todd & Casey should offer to pick up non-established up and comers and work with them. (Casey is kind of doing it). Split the winnings 60-40. Both Casey and Todd still have good points that will keep a young player in the Main draw for a full year while getting the experience needed. Because of the value of gaining the points, the 60-40 purse split would be better money spent than just getting and paying a coach (40% of a top 7, is better than 100% of missing the draw or a 13th). I think John Mayer could do this too as well if he was ready. A year with a veteran like these guys will jump start their careers. Players like Tony Ciarelli or Page (just as examples), who have a hard time turning down indoor $$ to struggle making it to the main draw maybe would come to the beach full time knowing they are in the main draw all season. If USA Volleyball supplemented a program like this, it would do a ton of good too, they could give the senior player a "coaching stipend".
