I'm sure Lily is very well informed about what she is getting into. Last year the Samorodok team practiced with the Wahine during the week that they were here and they got the opportunity to get to know them a little better than just playing them. For Samorodok to come over to play from Russia means that UH and Dave Shoji were well informed about the team, and I am sure they would have advised Lily otherwise if they felt there would be a problem. Lily is a great player and Russia would be quite an experience, I can't even remember a US player playing there in the club system. Just get some long underwear and she should be fine:)

Does the Russian team speak English too and/or Lily speak Russian as well? I think that may be more of an adjustment problem for her than the culture and weather there in Russia. I know HPU had a hard time at first with their Brazilian setter because of the language barrier since she barely spoke any English which made it difficult for both her and that year's players on the team to communicate during a match.

Most people outside of the US speak more than one language. Its only the American's that speak English and almost nothing else. I would assume that there is at least one person on the team that speaks English and will be able to communicate with Kahumoku. People are very adaptive when they have to be. If Kahumoku is put in a situation where she has to learn Russian in order to survive, it will take some time but she will learn.

While going to play volleyball in Russia may sound a bit... extreme... it doesn't surprise me that it's Lily who is actually going there.
Lily is so free spirited and in charge of herself that this chance to play volleyball in Russia is no surprise. She's already conquered being away from her family for two years in high school, and most recently at UH. In my opinion, she has blossomed into an amazing young woman whose knowledge and intellect go far beyond her years. Being in Russia will be a challenge for her, but will teach her things about life and culture she would have never learned if she followed her peers and went to play in Puerto Rico. I give Lily a whole lot of credit for taking on this challenge, and I wish her every bit of luck. If there is any player in America that can handle it, it's Lily.
I forsee no problem in the language department. Russian is a beautiful yet somewhat difficult language that Lily will enjoy learning. She is a very smart girl and will have no problem communicating with her coaches, teammates and the community. Good luck Lily!!

Just listened to lily on the radio and she mentioned that she was hooked to go to Russia after they said they were to invite Lauren Duggins. She said its only for two months so if she doen't like it atleast its only for two months. It was like a package deal of both of them. She had many other options as well and she chose Russia. She could have played in the league that Willoughby is goin to but chose not to. She also said that Beach volleyball is upcomin with her and her older sister. She might play beach volleyball in Hawaii as well when the tournament comes in Sept.
Just wanted to say this.

I'm sure there are people there who know at least some english. If it's not the players it's a manager or a trainer that does the translation job for them. In Europe we have teams with so many different composition of players and they somehow manage. Sometimes I do wonder what language they speak though:)

I think when Lily got a team high 26 kills in that exhibition against them, they had to have her. She'll be a star there. Go Lily!

People people, relax. It's two months. They'll adjust, or they won't. Either way, it's no big deal.
