Crone and Gillis sat out the last two matches and OH Young played setter. Is this a new lineup or did Mick give his team a break against two of the Pac-12's bottom three teams in the standings? This is a new lineup. Mick has exhausted all resources. Gillis is not of caliber for a OH in USC's system. Crone has been a mess. I think SC will stick with this lineup. The biggest key was Nwanebu getting hot. Her and Bricio are enough to carry the offensive load.

While I do think that USC is improving, it's kind of hard to look at their performance against a team who has ZERO wins in conference so far as some sort of sweeping justification for a changed tide. USC still have no wins against a team in the top half of the conference. Lets see how they look against Stanford before we thinking that this lineup is the way to go.
While I do think that some changes that have been made are for the better (like getting Gillis out of there), I'm not convinced that Young is any better at setting than Crone, and I also don't think that Nwanebu in the backcourt is actually a net positive for the team.

So what should SC do? Got alternatives to offer?

The Trojans have won five out of hteir last six, so it's not just the Cal match people are discussing.

I'm not saying they aren't improving, but lets see what they do against consistently better teams.

Playing Stanford and Washington in a 4 day span will tell us how much USC has improved in a hurry.

Nwanebu's not playing backrow? she was swinging from there when I saw her against Cal. I wasn't paying that close of attention but I could have sworn I saw her take a number of swings from the D. Perhaps not all three rotations, again, I wasn't paying attention, but she was back there defending and hitting. maybe it was just on her serve, but it seemed like more rotations than that.

Playing Stanford and Washington in a 4 day span will tell us how much USC has improved in a hurry. agreed. The wins USC has had in conference have all been against, at best, sub-regional quality competition. the question is are they now ready with this lineup and Nwanebu etc. to play and beat teams that are regional/final four caliber. I'm not saying they aren't, but as they say, gotta play the games to know!

Why would they schedule a wednesday-sunday match? makes no sense. It's more money/time traveling, either way. Either the team spends 5 days in a hotel room, in the bay area (not cheap), or they take 4 total flights within 1 week. And the Pac-12 was supposed to be the "smart" conference? I'm sure a team would much rather play the very next day rather than a wednesday-sunday spread.

Isn't air travel so amazing? We should all thank the people who work so hard to allow us to travel so quickly. They must be super awesome folks!
