I'm pretty sure the coach knows what he is doing. Morales a good player, but a little undersized. I'm interested to hear what other Badger fans think about this.

Hey Wahinefan44
Did you ignore that SHE MADE THE NCAAA ALL TOURNEY TEAM..."Ellen Chapman had 17 kills and Deme Morales added 14 -- including the final two points -- as the Badgers ended Texas' attempt to become the sixth school to win consecutive national titles".
"After splitting points, Thomas' block -- following a one-handed dig by Carlini -- gave Wisconsin a 23-22 lead. Molly McCage answered for Texas, but a kill by Morales gave Wisconsin its second match point. This time the Badgers finished it off on Morales' kill, setting off a wild celebration on the court.
READ AGAIN what Kabvb has to say. You had MORALES at 5' 7" going against the trees from TEXAS and she still had 14 kills.
Not surprising that the Coach Elliot from Texas said MORALES was "the catalyst" of the upset.
Plus Morales would have done WAY WAY better against PSU. PSU is not as big this year, and if she could get double digit kills last year against TEXAS and PSU...she would have done even better this year.....and Wisconsin would have won at least one and maybe more sets.

COACH ELLIOTT: The blocking scheme our scouting report was a block line team and to take that away. Morales did a nice job hitting high hands on us.
It's a challenge she's a very talented lady. She's good because she knows how to hit high hands, used to the block, blocks well and does that. And we got tooled a bunch.
She was coming back to the line. And our blocking was really good tonight. We almost had five stuff blocks per game. If you're blocking three, you're probably leading the country, 3.1, leading the country. So our blocking has been really good."
Morales might had been blocked which accounts for the 13 errors, but she kept coming back with 14 kills.
DEME MORALES: Yeah, I think before it used to really like bother me when I was younger. But going through all this and going up against huge blockers, I just it fires me up.
It's like, okay, I just have to keep going at them. It just fires me up. It's more like a motivator."
DEME MORALES: There's just no words right now. Obviously we're all like "uhhhh..." We don't know what to say right now.
But we never expected that we were going to get this far. And the fact that we all just gathered together and we made a goal and we just fought back and I don't know. Everyone is just so proud of each other and we know we're one of the tightest teams out there. And we're just ballers. We go out and we play. Let the cards fall where they may.
I don't think anyone is happier than us right now.
HEY wahinefan44 STILL SAY SHE WASN'T EFFECTIVE AGAINST TEXAS?
THAT IS THE KIND OF PLAYER THAT MADE WISCONSIN'S RUN TO THE FINAL.....SPECIAL....Take that away and you have?

Kubricks, you are not helping the cause here.
Sheffield is a smart dude. If they are indeed a NC contender then he will figure it out.
Maybe there are things at play that you are not aware ?

No one said morales wasn't talented. She very much is, but there are obviously more talented people on wisocnsin a roster.

I guess you would rather have BATES who hit a whopping .077 against PSU.....maybe that .182 would have made the match more competitive with key points and fired up the team...... Bates is a freshman with huge potential. Regardless, Krisova (sp) will be playing soon. Don't you worry!

Akbar: Sheffield is a smart dude and a great coach...sometimes a coach forgets the most important things and sacrifices the intangibles for a little more height. Thought everyone would find these comments of coach Sheffield interesting. I just might have to email him, to remind him....
Question: During the broadcast on Saturday they said that Deme Morales is the shortest outside hitter in the Big Ten. She played phenomenal throughout the tournament. Comment on her efforts. How is she able to play so big?
Sheffield: She's not just the shortest outside in the Big Ten, she is in any of these power conferences. She might be the shortest outside hitter in a 16-and-under club tournament. Like I said, you're playing a different game than what people that are touching 11 foot are. But her game is really good. She's a warrior, that's the best word I can use to describe her. I keep waiting for her to show up with some eye paint, some eye black underneath. She's probably our most unsung hero of this team. She passes half the court. She takes a lot of swings. Everybody is running their offense over the top of her. Most teams are coming in after they've left the match with their lowest hitting percentage of the year against us, so...
I think that's a tribute to our other backcourt players. But I said it earlier in the year and I really mean it, that's the last kid I'd want to face in a dark alley. She just has that mentality she just wants to brawl. She doesn't care.
There's this fierceness of keep coming back, keep coming back. There's a lot of matches that she'll get stuff blocked quite a few times early on. You just don't keep her down. She's got a big wall in front of her. She's getting (indiscernible). She's having to listen to her idiot coach get on her over on the sideline. The kid just keeps coming back for more and more and more.
You know, she's a warrior. That's the best thing I can say about her. There's no way we would be in the position we are in without Deme Morales."
I think he needs to read this again......

I will preface my post with this: I am a huge Deme fan... but being an outside who is considered undersized and has a good vertical, one season of jumping your absolute highest to hit around the block and to score was extremely taxing on my body and in my last season of playing, I wasn't the same. Lets assume that Deme is human and jumping 40 inches 40 times a match for 30+ matches might have taken a toll on her body.
And lets not assume she is upset about this either. She may be perfectly content with her position this year. When Airelle Wilson came to Penn St. she took Melissa Wallbridge's spot immediately, who was a 3 year starter before, and instead of getting upset it appeared and reported on that Wallbridge embraced it and took her under her wing.

NCAAVB123:
You made a lot of good points. Maybe last season took a toll on her physically. I am sure that she wants to help out the team anyway that she can. It just seems that against PSU, they were really missing her contributions to the team.

You all are acting like he is against her because of her height. Dom is 5'11, the shortest starting middle in the Big Ten I assume and Bates is only 5'10, its not like a 6'5 girl beating out a 6'1 girl because of height

Morales is not the reason they beat Texas…. let's just be honest.
Texas is the reason that Wisconsin beat them.

This. She wasn't benched because she was short, it was because I can't name one skill she executes at an above-average level in the Big Ten Well, Bates did not take her place because of her outstanding play. Bates: .023 vs. Washington .077 vs Penn State In three matches against Penn St. last year, Morales hit .064 on 2.9 kps. Bates hit .077 with 3.0 kps in her match against PSU. Slight edge to Bates on offense, add to that she's a MUCH better passer and not as much of a blocking liability, and I'm not really sure what your argument is?
