Santa Clara the most psychotic team. Beats duke and UOP, both good teams, and loses to Harvard? LMU and BYU only teams to Ncaas this year.

In the Thursday PTW match, lots of voters will be unhappy. Santa Clara over San Diego in 4 sets as Santa Clara had more aces, blocks, digs, assists and better hitting percentage. USD went through multiple lineup changes including Bonomi as libero for 2 sets and then a 6-2 in set 3 and a 5-1 with Bonomi in set 4. Their best success was with Kramer at middle in the 4th set, hitting over .700. Defense was a struggle for USD all night. Santa Clara's freshman middles Edwards and Calkins both hit over .500, sophomore OH Nikki Hess was a difference maker with 21 kills and 4 blocks, and freshman setter Mead had 57 assists, 10 digs, 3 aces, 4 kills and 4 blocks.
BYU over USF in 4 sets in Provo. Sophomore Whitney Young tied a BYU record with 17 blocks/block assists while adding 8 kills, hitting .889! (Someone find out what they are feeding that girl!). Set scores were -15, -18, 23-25, -11.
LMU over Portland in 4 with surprisingly close set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24. Portland out blocked LMU 14-9!
Gonzaga handed Pepperdine yet another loss, in 4 sets: 22-25, -14, -19, -15. Blinn again led the way for the Zags with 17 kills, while Gasser added 14 and Ferris 10. Katie Messing led the Waves with 16 kills. Gonzaga hit .269 to Pepperdine's .086. Strehlow was held to only 2 kills, hitting negative, while Palmeri had the best hitting percentage for the Waves with 10 kills, hitting .318

Not a good sign if San Diego is changing lineups every set. Isn't the pre-season the time to experiment? That tells me the staff isn't confident in their players, and that is not a good thing.
Pepperdine is a sinking ship. People claim they have talent and a great coach, but they look lost not he court. Nina is rolling over in her grave.
Other than BYU, I don't trust a single team in this league. Good win one nigh, bad loss the next. If anyone else gets into the NCAA tournament, I would pick against them every time, until they can prove they can be consistent.

Loyola should be good enough to qualify. I do share the sentiment that teams are hot and cold. Santa Clara seems very young, except for Milton. Hess, their seeming best offensive threat, is only a sophomore; frosh setter (and middles?). Seen UOP beat Cal and LMU and they looked fine. I hope teams like Gonzaga and USF don't win just enough to screw up chances of other teams to get in the tourney.

USF made the tournament in 2008, so that wouldn't be too far fetched.

LMU beat UCLA, and San diego(won't be top 25 anymore) Yeah they went 5 with UW but so did Gonzaga and Cal? That up and down performance goes for a lot of teams, not just the WCC.

If anything, the only realistic NCAA bids I see are BYU, LMU, Santa Clara, Pacific, and San Diego. Most likely three bids.

I went to Portland last night to watch LMU play. I don't think LMU was any different than most teams in that situation. They played down and with little energy or concern that they could even lose. A dangerous mindset that plagues many teams and will bite them for sure if they do the same tomorrow at Gonzaga. Portland played scrappy with tons of energy and determined effort. They had a great little fan vib going and if they could have taken LMU to 5, it might have been enough for the win.
