Werth has good insight, but no vocal ability. Amin is the best play-by-play out there. I like Liz Tortorello-Nelson, but sometimes she tries too hard. At least she knows the game. Nell Fortner just says things for the sake of saying them, kinda like Kelli Tennant.

I saw Hannah Werth was doing some commentating. Forget which matches. I liked the way she explained what exactly the player did right or wrong when going up for a kill. More technical info than you hear all the time from other announcers/color commentators. I agree about some of the announcers that go off on a tangent while play is going on. Sometimes I'd catch myself yelling at the screen "Hey, stop yapping and pay attention to the game that's going on in front of you" Couldn't disagree more. She was one of the worst color commentators I have heard. She just talked and talked and talked. She wouldn't shut up. Quite often she talked over the play by play guy. She, like many other announcers, needs to learn how to make their point quickly. If she was on another game I was watching, I would turn the sound off.

Nothing more annoying than an announcer telling you the wrong thing- at least to me.

I don't like it when they talk about random things over the action on the court. I also don't like it when they bring in some previous player or coach and interview them, again ignoring the action on the court. If the interviewee wants to talk about the current game, and what's going on right then, that's fine.
I don't like the term "roll shot" but that's my own pet peeve. Oh, and "footspeed".
And like everyone else, I hate it when they explain the libero, or how scoring works.

you know, it is not the greatest...but i am just glad matches are on and they have announcers, that are at least announcers. my dd school has communications students doing it and one person that has some knowledge but still very bad/ you can even hear the communications kid asking the person who has some knowledge (when the mike is on before the match) what the girls up front do and what the girl in the different colored jersey is.......soooooooo i am not complaining about the espn3 announcers..

I like Holly McPeak when she's covering on the Pac 12 network, and Heather Hughes. Think Heather is on doing bigger gigs now. Former NCAA champion and player, McPeak knows the indoor game, and love her input on the game... Karch is also good, but he's not on the air as much anymore... The worst is K. Wong for PaC 12... yawn

I like Paul Sunderland, Missy Whittermore, Kevin Barnett, Chris Marlow, Karch Kiraly, Holly McPeak, because they all do a good job. I'll never forget they paired McPeak with someone who had never played and doesn't normally follow volleyball and he said something extremely stupid, and she was just silent for like one minute, forget what it was, but I was just thinking WHY do they give us these people? We also do not need any explanation about the libero rule and the scoring system anymore, if an infraction is called because the libero handsets the ball in the front court then they can explain it a little bit but I don't feel it's necesary, that bugs me everytime. That and not bothering to study the recent news on both teams, and the rosters.

The one thing that's missing from volleyball that is simple and common in other sports coverage (especially baseball and basketball) is the lineup and matchups.
Part of the reason for that is time. In baseball, there is plenty of time between plays and there are constant references to who's at bat, who is on deck, relief pitcher warming up, etc.
In volleyball, one of the most important things you can easily see when you attend a match in person is substitutions and rotations. But on most volleyball broadcasts subs and rotations are usually completely ignored.
This could be fixed with graphics.
After sideouts or during substitutions, put up a small six-position square in the corner of the screen with names. It could be interactive with showing the rotation or showing subs. It would be shown at every sideout and every substition. The announcers could reference it, or ignore it. There could be a separate graphic that is shown at key times that shows the front row players names on both sides of the net...again a six-position square in the corner of the screen.
I suspect if one network began using it, soon all would.
And it would have the added bonus of having the announcers maybe begin to focus on this part of the game, instead of telling long-winded stories or talking about best three out of five...fifth set to 15, libero wears a different color jersey, blah blah blah....the stuff that just detracts from the broadcast.

I know Heather Cox has some detractors here from her volleyball commenting days (not sure why), but she is one of ESPN's best sideline reporters. Never frazzled, comfortable, knows what she wants to say, is efficient, clear and intelligent...unlike so many reporters ESPN has. (Watching the FSU/ND football game and she's there, hence the thought...)
