Does this stuff really surprise anyone? I imagine there are many parents/players that have similar stories. I also think there are some coaches that hide it better then others,Cook just doesn't bother to disguise it.

I am surprised. I questioned his decision to say "the ball was in" to JMac because I thought it was uncalled for and unnecessarily provoking. Of course, JMac chose to escalate, which is a different story altogether, but...other than that, I've thought he's doing the important things right to have the record of accomplishment that he has. Including connecting with and managing his team, preparing them for success, and teaching how to play the game. How man of his former Huskers just won the World Championship? Sure, there's blips on his record because he's human and he's bound to err at some points.
Just a suggestion, but consider chilling out on this thread! The team has some growing up to do, no doubt, That's no reason to abandon ship. In another thread discussing Minn v. Wisc, Wisc fans were sympathizing with Minn fans about seeing their team go through uncharacteristic struggles, and they said to just hang on and give support. If Cook makes questionable moves, sure ... call out his bad strategy, like the discussion on setting troubles. No need to drag him or players through the mud! I'm sure a substantial number of programs would take him in a second if you guys don't want him anymore!

We haven't seen support for a regime crumble this quickly since perestroika.

Great job by the Illini, Criswell was fun to watch as well as their libero. Nebraska has serious leadership issues, no one looked like they had any energy out there today. The Huskers' weakness in the middle is maddening..only 6 kills apiece from Hall and Haggerty. Hall had a nice match, but she needs to demand the ball. Pollmiller needs to watch tape from 2012 and take note of how Lauren set Haggerty, the current pace on the slide is so slow.. It is most definitely Mary, not Haggerty, that is the issue in NE. Haggerty was amazing her freshman year and she hasn't sniffed a consistent or decent slide since then. I can't speak to the twins topic, but I get the strong impression that Mary is unwilling or unable to set the twins well. When Alicia rotates back, it just seems like Mary doesn't know what to do. Reference the three straight slides to Meghan, even though the first two were stuffed. Perhaps this is Mary's reaction to the twins' attitudes. I, for one, can't wait for the start of the Kelly Hunter era, and it now seems like JC is marking time, too.

We haven't seen support for a regime crumble this quickly since perestroika. But those were small players back then (Reagan, Gorby, etc.) ... this is BIG TIME!

I don't think anyone's abandoning ship. Maybe venting some obvious frustration . I also think sometimes it's beneficial to get everything on the table. If any of this behavior is true it's not fair to the rest of the team. Let's face it,coaches have favorites and intentionally or not it impacts the entire team chemistry and if it's not brought to someone's attention it will continue the downward spiral . It can't be fixed if it's not acknowledged.

Wow. As an Illinois fan, my appreciation for Coach Hambly has skyrocketed. Several times this year he accepted blame and refused chances to publicy criticize players. Although I only am able to watch on computer or tv, I cannot recall a single outburst directed towards a player. A good role model for other coaches.

Something I read a loooong time ago on this very board. Cook will coach until the terrible twins graduate, then he announces he's stepping down and will soon be off to California to play beach and write a book. His heir apparent will be KJL. Not sure how on target that long ago poster was, but it's something to make you go hmmmm.

Wow...the Huskers lost to a very good Illinois team. Why the panic? Do you think Russ Rose is imploding because of his losses. Come on people.
John is a fantastic coach. I have observed many successful coaches in college and high school over the years. None of them made me feel warm and fuzzy. My complaint about John? He gets a lineup in his head and then sticks to it even if its a mess. I will keep harping on this until the cows come up. Ostrander is incredible on the right. The only time Amber hits well is on the left. Move them for crying out loud. The things I notice. Haggerty, and the twins seem to hit if off but rarely do they seem welcoming to Ostrander or the other players. That would end in a hurry if I was the coach. This isn't Prom night at the local gym. Grow up girls or sit down.

I've read a couple people in this thread say Cook is implying Mary is the problem, and that couldn't be further from the truth. He's gone out of his way at each opportunity this year to talk about Mary in measured words. He has not, to my knowledge, criticized her play when he's had multiple opportunities.
He was even asked today if Mary needed to be better this year than last year and put up different quality of sets. He said no.
Regardless of to what extent Mary's play is tied to Nebraska's ugly hitting numbers, Cook has certainly not thrown her under the bus to the press.
Every criticism I've heard him make this season has been the typical esoteric "we need more energy," "we need to execute," "two points better," etc...

Agree with these latest posts. My kid has played against the twins since 14--they haven't changed much. Their reputation in high school and club was they were not the best teammates, not fun to play with. Was at the game Saturday, no energy, no fun atmosphere. The most fun was when the Illini students came in with red shirts on, sat in the student section directly ahead of us, took of the red shirts when its dark during introductions, appeared in their orange shirts and were fun and loud for the first few points, and then evicted to high seats opposite. Cook would be a hard coach to play for, definitely not for everyone. Always heard Werth wanted to leave but he said he would never give her a release, not sure if that is true. Have also heard from a former player, (left after freshman year), promised all sorts of things, delivered on little. Saw Cook tear into Meske and Dani B the last couple of games, haven't really paid attention to that before. Tough year for the Huskers, hope they can turn it around. I'm not surprised about these impressions of twins' overall court demeanor and attitude. These are twins that committed to playing for Nebraska before they were even old enough to stay at home without a babysitter... I mean come on. They have their eyes on the prize and don't want to let anyone get in their way. As for Cook, come on, it's common knowledge that he's an ass wipe! a great successful ass wipe, but an ass wipe nonetheless.
