Whatever Hambly said during the break sure worked! Like a different team in sets 3 and 4. Obviously he made some adjustments as well. Was definitely worried after set 2.

They started out slow but what I'm learning about this team is this is the norm . Criswell and Birks are both outstanding. Does Criswell struggle in the back ? I would think both powers all around would make them unstoppable. But Birks and Donnelly are their work horses. Donnelly is as tough as nails. Good game.

I expect that there will be a DIFFERENT thread for the match tomorrow night.
Michigan and Michigan State are rival schools, and I'm sure that Illini fans would not be happy if their match thread was lumped into a Northwestern thread.

Brandi gets an early, hard facial by Reinig. Ouch. Go Brandi! In my estimation a libero in the B1G is not a LIBERO IN THE B1G until you get facialled by one of the many hard-spiking, killer volleyball players in the B1G. Chloe Reinig is definitely one of those hard-spiking, killer volleyball players in the B1G. Brandi Donnelly is now officially a LIBERO IN THE B1G rather than just a libero in the B1G! Go Brandi! Go Illini!

Not a great match by the Illini. Illinois' LS were the bomb...as was Reinig. Illinois' middles were a non-factor (as opposed to their play vs. Purdue last weekend). The middles better get their act together vs. Michigan and their strong middle, Abby Cole. I thought serve receive for the Illini was not great. Other than sets to the LS's, Viliunas setting was pretty bad. A lot of low sets (short armed sets in my vb lingo) above the net to the middles when she set the middles...her sets to the middles pretty much assured that the middles would be unsuccessful. Lucky for the Illini that both Illinois left-sides, Criswell and Birks were lights out! I had a strong feeling Birks would come back strong this weekend...powerful hitting. And, Criswell seems to be the difference maker...as Criswell goes, so go the Illini. Morganne is having a spectacular senior season. Please keep it going!
I probably have grown up disliking the University of Michigan sports teams more than any other in the B1G. UM is such a great academic university across the educational spectrum...unlike Illinois where the liberal arts take a backseat to the high-ranking Engineering and Science Departments. It seems unfair that Michigan's athletic teams are dominant as well. I admit some inner satisfaction that Michigan's football program has been in some disarray over the last few seasons (certainly not to the extent of Illinois' hopeless football program, however). Just heard tonight that Michigan's AD has resigned (under pressure, no doubt). And, the football coach will most likely be let go at the end of this season. Both of these guys were Michigan alums and products of their athletic system. I have appreciated Michigan volleyball, except when the Coaches Rosen go a little crazy with the officiating. That can get tedious fast! However, I do love their Illinois vb alum, assistant coach Erin Virtue. She played vb at Illinois the way it should be played...always with a lot of heart and passion...and success. I also really enjoyed UM's Final Four team of a couple of years ago. They represented the B1G well, and the most essential part of their success was that they played as a TEAM. I never figured out what happened to the vb team that next year when they had all of their players back save one (I believe), but with much less success.
Anywho...here's hoping for better play from the Illini tomorrow night. And, an Orange and Blue victory!

Anyone know how Donnelly is comparing to Beltran her freshman year in terms of stats?
