I couldn't believe the Florida coach's decision at the end of the fifth and deciding game. With Florida up 10-8 after six unanswered points , all the momentum on their side, and Minnesota back on their heels, her decision to take Mcginnis out and put in a new setter was, to say the least, incredible. I have never seen a decision quite like that one. That new setter. Mcginnis is amazing and should never be sitting on the bench.

You mean all SEC setter Lauren Moscovic. Well were they running the 6-2 during the match? I know they sometimes run the 6-2 early in the year.

They ran a 5-1 with Moskovic the first two games. Then a 6-2 the rest of the match. McGinnis is taller and effective with good passes, Moskovic is much quicker to the ball with bad passes. Good luck Mary making the decision, seems like everytime they started McGinnis the first 3 matches they lost and then they lost the first game against FSU with Moskovic. Freshman jitters?? Probably for the future of the program, McGinnis will be seeing more time since Moskovic is a senior. Therefore, I hope they improve the passing.

Actually, it was not quite like that, although I too thought there were some strange moves being made with the setters. And I am, after all, no one whatsoever.
Anyhow:
Game 1--5-1 with Moscovic playing BR and McGinnis FR, although McGinnis served. Florida lost
Game 2--5-1 with McGinnis until 6-10, then Moscovic the rest of the way. Florida won.
Game 3--5-1 with Moscovic playing BR and McGinnis FR, McGinnis serving. Florida won.
Game 4--6-2 with McGinnis staying in the front row while Moscovic played the BR (for Killingsworth). They lost, badly. Douglas probably played some FR for McGinnis. I know she was blocked for MN's 29th point.
Game 5--stuck with the 6-2 and they lost again. Killingsworth played FR for McGinnis and Douglas for Moscovic.

In that fifth game they were running a 5-1 with Mcginnis the entire game, they were on a roll and then incredibly decided to switch setters, probably costing them the match and the number one ranking. It was almost as if the coach didn't want the freshman to get a big win like that and wanted her senior to get the win. But it backfired.

Nope. She just rotated to the front row (and subbed out for a hitter).
But you are right in that they won with the modified 5-1 and lost with the 6-2.

She didn't have to sub out though and could have continued setting. I have never seen a setter this good and have so much poise. If she were to run the 5-1 with her consistently throughout the year and learn her hitters better, I think this team could improve tremendously and have a good shot at winning the ncaa's

vb1, a few questions for you.
A) What star setters have you seen? B) How many college matches have you seen? C) How many prep matches have you seen of your prized McGinnis? D) What exactly makes McGinnis better than all-SEC Moscovic? E) What happens when McGinnis is replaced as a junior because Florida lands a better setter then?
Just curious.

Hey now, it is a legitimate question. I felt the same way last year for Men's volleyball. And I liked tuyay even though I am hard on him. He likes McGinnis. It's not like he's calling Moscovic a burden on the team. There's a big argument about upperclass setters and freshman setters. Guess wrong and you blow a good shot at a champion or you lose an opportunity to go to the FF with a talented setter that will be even better when she starts next year. It's a tough call. I have seen Lauren play but not McGinnis so I can't really make a judgment.

Sadly, Moscovic has never been named all-SEC 1st team. 2nd team only once McGinnis has been hit or miss, thus far. She certainly has great talent and potential, but she's still not nearly as consistent as Moscovic. She's a better blocker and when the ball is passed right to her, McGinnis is a great setter. But, right now, I'd take Moscovic, mainly b/c Florida isn't a very good passing team right now and with Lauren in, she gives the hitters a better chance to be successful. She may not look as pretty setting the ball, but I don't want pretty, I want effective. Plain and simple, Moscovic has led her team to back to back final 4 appearances. She doesn't get much love, but she's a big reason for the success of Florida the past few years. I wish Mary would pick one and stick with her.

Yeah I know she was only second team(why I don't know, I'm still mad at that snub). It's still means she made the ALL-SEC team. When they list Hawaii's seniors, they call them ALL-WAC performers when a few didn't even make first team.

I'm also sympathetic to vb1's cause. I'm not a big fan of the SEC in that I believe it's a weak conference, so the "ALL-SEC" stuff doesn't impress me much. I'm a big fan of Moscovic however, but also believe she should take over the libero position and let McGinnis take over the setting. If McGinnis doesn't play FR/BR, you only get half of what she does best. Why not take full advantage of her? Some say what McGinnis has to offer is exactly what cost the Gators the championship match last year, that is, a tall blocking / dumping / serving setter. I say, if another SEC title is all they want, then go with Moscovic. No doubt, both Moscovic and McGinnis are great setters, but why go with the same ole same ole, those cards have been played before. Go FL!

The question is, what better fits the team. It's great if your taller dinking setter diversifies the offense and keeps people guessing but the word is that the Gators have passing problems. McGinnis might be an exception but generally tall setters have a problem chasing down shanks or they become reliant on dinking. Yes, the Gators need a better blocking setter... last year. I'm big believer in plugging up the setter gap but this year the competition does not seem as composed. You may just need Florida hitters to get more comfortable and play D rather than concentrate on the block. I don't think lauren is in there just to win the SEC. Mary wants to win the championship bad. The fact that she is playing McGinnis over a senior should be evidence that she agrees with you guys at least partially.

They both have something to offer for sure. Possibly McGinnis will become a better setter one day but right now she has only 3-4 games at collegiate level. The lack of experience is critical, especially for setters. I’ll take any time a setter who can keep the system going and who makes less errors (mental) rather than somebody who would make a big play here and there followed by something silly. Moscovic is a fighter tested by 2 FF appearances. Don’t forget FL lost 4 starters which is quite something so I'm guessing the expectation is Moscovic together with JC, SW and MC to form a team core that can carry over the load. Anyway M Wise is too good of a coach not to see all +/- and I’m sure her decisions will be “wise”.
The statement that FL didn’t win last year’s NCAA because of their setter makes me laugh.

When they list Hawaii's seniors, they call them ALL-WAC performers when a few didn't even make first team. Only Melissa Villaroman didn't make first team, but there were no liberos on the first team.
