I noticed that against Florida.. I think they set one ball to a middle in the middle the entire match.. everything is a slide.. also, when the backrow setter digs to the frontrow setter, 9 times out of 10 she sets the slide.. surprised teams don't key on that more yet.

I actually think teams do key on it.
The mamtches during the past weekend teams seemed to pick up relatively quickly that the Gophers were basically a pin-to-pin style team.
In some respects that can work to the Gophers' advantage late in close matches if teams key too much on defending againt left and right side attacks.
They do like to throw in quick tempo attacks from Kelly Bowman and Lindsey Taatjes in the middle off serve receive at times though.
I'm happy to see that the Big 10 overall has done very well in the non-conference matches and it ought to be an exciting and close conference season.

If someone yesterday had told me a thread about a match between Rice and Minnesota would go 10 pages here, I would have laughed my socks off.
Today, I am wearing sandals.

But can you do a really good polka dance while wearing sandals, like the bearded guy at the Badger game?

The slide is EXACTLY the play you want to run when 1) the opponent is keying on your OHs and/or 2) the backrow setter digs the ball.
Split the block. Always has been and always will be a VB fundamental. Doesn't matter if they know you are running it. They can't get 2 up on a slide AND the outside attack.
The Gophers DO run a fair # of 32s to their middles (and to Martin), and some tight back slides. I think they set the middle more than they used to. They HAVE to if they are going to run a 6-2.
But, yes. The Gophers will need more production from their middles to become a better team--and this falls upon the setters as much as the middles. I think they will get just that.

Minnesota, based on the Rice match, does not look like the #1 team in the nation. They were fortunate to win.Rice did play well.

Minnesota, based on the Rice match, does not look like the #1 team in the nation. I should hope so! I'd hate to think the #1 team in the country could look GOOD going 5 against Rice. OTOH, the Gophers looked VERY GOOD in their 5-game loss to USC. That, I'd be willing to bet, is still their best match of the year. So, it just doesn't mean much. I hope they show you more in the next two matches. Anything else you can tell us about the match?

I didn't actually think of the Gophers as the best team in the country even though they're ranked #1 in the AVCA poll. At this point its more a matter of attrition that the ranking goes to them because of the number of other highly ranked teams losing.
I don't think there is a clear "best" team in the country right now, and that's probably a good thing for volleyball.
I've been concerned about the number of relatively large leads that the Gophers have given up in games this years, however, I've been very happy that they've been able to hold on (or come back) to win some very close matches.

>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=general&thread=1095455150&start=136#9 date=1095480103] They do like to throw in quick tempo attacks from Kelly Bowman and Lindsey Taatjes in the middle off serve receive at times though. 2nd tempo, but yes they do run their RSs into the middle some. This also allows them to run the slide. It's also resulted in some very interesting collisions--or sets to phantom players...

Now if only those phantom players would learn to do their job and take care of putting away the set's they've been getting.
I actually like what the Gophers have been doing overall with the 6-2, though there do still appear to be some kinks to be worked out of the system.

Minnesota, based on the Rice match, does not look like the #1 team in the nation. They were fortunate to win.Rice did play well. I have always liked the Rice volleyball team. Each year, they schedule a major tournament where there are ranked teams. Time and time, they have always walked out with a loss but that has never stopped them for continuing that tradition. The only way to get better is to play the best. Hawaii better watch out. This team could be very confident. They know they can hang with the top teams, so they might feel like they can beat Hawaii.

IT is for the most part mystique that keeps Hawaii above the WAC teams. However, most of the time, Hawaii blitzes them early and just keeps pouring it on. If the composure of the other team holds up, Hawaii would be in trouble. That's why five game survivors like Reno, San Jose state and rice can be scary because they hold it together even when they are down. However, this team has a surprise for them, they are hard to put down. They fight back harder than any Hawaii team I've ever seen. They win games more grit than pure ability.
Great represent for the wAC, Rice. Let's make this a special year for WAC volleyball since it'll never be the same without SMU, Rice and Tulsa. The Miners... It's up to them.
