Thx. It's v different from last years lineup. Do u think it will be better or worse than last year? How good is the usc transfer? Is she as good as last years' oh? And the right side, she wasn't a starter. Is she as good as Thomas offensively. I know the ball control lost from Thomas is hard to replaced. And the new Middle. Freshman? Sorry so many question. But I don't know the probable new starters at all Will the lineup be better or worse? No idea. It could be better, but these are a new group. We haven't seen them. We don't kno the chemistry. They will progress as the season goes on I expect. So what we see in the beginning will be different than what we see at the end. That even happened last year with a team dominated by seniors. The USC transfer, Gillis, was a top ten recruit in 2013. She only hit 0.174 last year which was not well enough to keep from getting yanked from the lineup mid season because of poor passing, according to trojan fans. As she was known for her back row play in Club and has high praise from her club coach in this regard, the last part was surprising. Something was going on. Maybe she gets that skillset back with a new environment, renewed confidence and different coaching. She knows Williams and Morey from club. Maybe she hits better hitting in a faster offence rather than the USC moonball offense, which some say did not suit her. Duello is another top 10 recruit that could fill this spot too. She has a high ceiling. Report on her summer workouts from teammates was very good, according to Sheff. Between them I think we can replace Chapman's production, although chappy was amazingly error free last year. Thomas had an amazing year last year. Still bummed she didn't get first team AA. It will be hard to replace her production. But Kriskova is pretty good. How good is a topic of endless debate concerning the difference between hitting in the A10 vs the B1G, and of being the lone attacker compared to one of a diverse group being set by Carlini. If healthy I expect she will hit between the 0.270 she hit at VCU and Thomas's 0.340 in conference. She looks in really great shape. Willams at MB is another top10 recruit and is known for her quickness. She's not of athletic build like Thompson, but she's a bit taller and should be able to run the slide well and block with her lateral quickness. Sheff has said good things about Blake as well. Normally he says things for a reason, I find. He was not really sure what would happen at middle.

From what I have seen at USC, Gillis was inconsistent on Serve Receive. Sometimes her passing was perfect, sometimes she overpassed/shanked it, sometimes it was just a settable ball. I don't know why but I am sure she will improve especially with some experience from the JNT. I also saw a match where she jump served so that could help Wisconsin. Of course most of the balls went to Bricio/Nwanebu but Gillis did a pretty good job with the sets she got.

Honestly I think the great thing about this year for Wisconsin is the amount of talent on the roster. It is so unpredictable. No one's spot is safe, and it should make for some great competition and great improvements throughout the season. No one? Baby Jesus begs to differ on that. Pretty sure her spot is safe. Just a hunch though. You mean Morey, right? But the original point is a good one. We know what makes sense to happen, but an awful lot of other things can happen too. We have so little experience with this group of players. It will be fun!

I didn't see her much as USC, but statistically see seemed error prone in her hitting compared to the other hitters. Maybe that goes along with the inconsistency in passing. Confidence?

I think it might have been a mix of confidence and the bad setting situation at USC. The moonballs, I think is what hurt her and Crone was not consistent with the setting. Also, when I watched she got a lot of out of system sets, as the in system sets would usually go to Nwanebu or Bricio or the middles.

Wisconsin did well the previous two season is bc of stellar passing and defence which get carlini to show off her skill. The attackers are not as dominant as other top team but they pull it off with balance offence. So I think it's v important to have good passing so carlini can keep doing her job. The attacker can be mediocre but their passing or defence must be good.

Well, aggressive serving, accurate passing, and scrappy floor defense are pretty much the hallmarks of a Sheffield-coached team, so you're not really saying anything new. My optimistic predictions: LC and Tionna have a good connection; Duello and Gillis fight it out for the second OH spot, making each other better; Gillis's passing re-solidifies under Dilly's tutelage; Kriskova hits like the beast her most recent pics suggest she's turned into.

However, I suggest if you haven't, you watch the Carlini highlight video and see what she does with the numerous bad passes. It's pretty phenomenal. Setting against the flow, bump setting perfect balls from way behind the 10 ft line. I'd also say watch Bates hit. She may not be as large as other hitters, but she pounds the ball. Courtney Thompson did as well. We were not PSU in that we had 6 (including Micha) dominant hitters, but those girls are not slouches.

The Badgers are one of the teams I am most interested in seeing. As long as you have LC you had a fighters chance, but with the addition of some bigger pin players (even if they are young) you may have knock out power this year. LC makes all hitters better! And all hitters gain a boost of confidence playing with her.

Carlini is not like other setters. A good pass helps, but her mobility and athleticism and her overall Carlini-ness allow her to set good balls when she has no business doing it. She can back set a relatively fast tempo slide accurately all the way back across court when running in the opposite direction. If you want to see a mortal but still pretty good Carlini for comparison...look at the regional final v PSU. One reason IMO we lost that final match (other than the bazillion service errors) was because our passers could not handle Micha's serves well enough at key junctures to get wounded Carlini into a good setting position. Normally she would have made some of those sets.

Apropos improving the ball on second contact, I'm reminded of a remark an opposing coach made after losing at the Field House in a match set by Lizzy Fitzgerald. His envious opinion was that having her on the floor was worth an extra 4.5 points per set, compared to a run of the mill setter. Last time I looked she was still around #15 all time in total blocks, too; everyone above her had played middle.
Meanwhile, one can't help noticing that Ms. Carlini's hitters in 2014 ended up with much higher kill efficiencies than in 2013. Part of that is the passing, and part of it is the hitting, but by all means let's credit her setting. Overall its the difference between a team that went 12-8 in the B1G and a team that went 19-1.
If you look at the Rich Kern percentages of hits/digs/sets/blocks lost to graduation, one of the subtle things you can infer is which teams had Really Good passing to their setters. E.g. Penn State graduating Micha Hancock cost them about 93% of their assists; most teams running 5-1 and graduating their setters only lost 60-80%. WI passed almost, but not quite as well as PSU; graduating Courtney cost us about 9% of our assists.
With the possible exception of Rutgers, whom I haven't been looking at closely, pretty much every other team in the B1G should be better this year than last, especially the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Watching Penn State reload and seeing how our WI freshman and transfers do against high level competition should make for a very exciting 2015 season.

Also there has been so much talk about cohesiveness and how the team will gel. I think that this has been a question before, leading into the 2013 season with the new coach and the youngsters/new additions (Carlini, Nelson, Morey). But that team found an emotional leader in Hickey. Last year Courtney and Deme. This year? I have my opinion and it is the least talked about of the returning players. Haleigh. She is kind of the unsung hero of this group in my opinion, heck it has been well documented that Sheff wasn't even sure she could play in the BIG. But here she is quietly putting in the work having a very solid career to this point and I see no reason why she won't continue to get better. My favorite part about her too is the fact that she genuinely seems to be enjoying every second of this experience/opportunity. (Could we have a 6 rotation middle on our hands here in Madison? lol I'm obviously joking, but if she had it her way...)

Nelson has a personality you need in a team, serious about her volleyball but always trying to keep things light with her team mates. She keeps it fun. I think Morey, Nelson and Carlini complement each other as captains. It's a good mix of personalities. And you're right...Haleigh has been quietly amassing an impressive career. How many UW middles have started throughout their careers, I wonder. Livingston obviously. I'd have to dig into the record books to figure that one out. No time, though. Gobucky???
