The majority of college all American team players can have nice futures in professional volleyball. Only a small fraction of those all Americans have a future with the USA National team. That's not a surprise to the players, the college coaches and a great many others.

She's working hard and having a good time, and it shows. Not looking forward to seeing her on the other side of the net next year!

Just read through the weekend’s debate regarding Jocelynn Birks and the national team. Many years ago one of my best friends elected to enter a PhD program rather than sign a MLB minor league contract right out of college. That summer, when we were taking in a ballgame in his home town I lost count of the people who approached him and, when they were told he was not going to play pro ball, encouraged him to keep trying, surely he could catch on somewhere. He was thrilled about his opportunity. We could almost taste their disappointment. No one was excited about a career that eventually led to his being a respected full professor and academic department head at a Midwestern university. I’m a huge fan, but athletics is usually a means to an end, something to be enjoyed while hopefully preparing for some other satisfying career. I still get upset when I hear about student/athletes who compromise their education so that they can devote “everything” to their sport. Mamabirks, you handled the exchange gracefully. Good luck to your daughter in whatever life choice she makes!

Good luck to your daughter in whatever life choice she makes! I think Birks has the opportunity to do whatever she wants if she puts her mind into it. she has a high ceiling and I think she's gonna get better numbers with an elite setter coming in. Barch wouldn't strike me to play with USA, but she is playing for USA in Panam. But if she does not go pro kudos to her and her family. Now that STUDENT athlete is now her new chapter. Lets just focus on this season. I do think this team can have a chance to go far in this tournament. I really hop Birks found her leadership role on her European tour and brings that new role to the team.

Huge Birks fan and what she brings to the Illini. Also big fan of Mamabirks. She gets it.
She will also be thrilled to know that her team's new setter who will be on campus in a few short weeks is absolutely ridiculous. Jordyn Poulter will start Day One. No disrespect to Ms. Vilunas, but Poulter is a can't miss. And for those Carlini for Queen supporters, let me tell you, the B1G has a battle on their hands already in terms of who the best setter is in the conference.
Don't sleep on the Illini. Sure, they have some key roles to fill (I think that Bastianelli will be a talent, but not right away) but setting is the least of their concerns. Poulter is locked and loaded.

Couldn't agree with you more. It will take Kevin all of 30 seconds to make this decision. This girl is very special. She was the best player at GJNC in New Orleans by a long shot. She could be the best setter in the BIG next season. Illinois has their best setter since Haen. They will be contenders for the title every year with her on the roster.

Will poulter do what Carlini did with Wisconsin? With all do respect, Lauren Carlini turned around the Wisconsin program.

I cannot wait to see what especially Joc Birks, but also Naya, the Alis (S & B), the Katies (S & R), Michelle, Maddie, Kathryn, and Beth do with a premier setter, Jordyn Poulter, setting them up.

I was watching Lauren and Jordyn senior film and I think they're are similar. I think Carlini is very crafty with her setting where Poulter is a more back to basics kinda setter. I was watching Poulters film and she get jumps so high when setting the ball. She also uses the middles a lot which is going to make the team more balanced.
