Oooooo-Once Upon a Mattress. Gotta look that up. Loved that when I was young. Yes, Wolf, musical theatre is not a cheap hobby/obsession. And I'm a snob - the local productions just don't cut it. The high school down the street does do an amazing job and I spend $5 every year to see them. Most I've ever spent was $175 to see the closing night of "Wicked" in LA. Worth every penny. I won't list all the shows I've seen - it's bordering on ridiculous. No Book of Mormon? I figured I'd be the first to bring it up.

I rarely watch musical theater (and I hate South Park), but my wife convinced me to go see BoM at the Pantages last year - I thought it was really entertaining.

West Side Story. Bernstein, Sondheim, Robbins. Every other musical pales in comparison. i tried. i really did. but singing/dancing rumblers just doesn't register for me. great music, but i find myself sitting there saying to myself "they would never do that". then again, my wife says the same thing about the norwegian fish dance, which i love...

Makes two of us. I ignorantly expected plenty of dialogue intertwined with the singing and dancing, perhaps more dialogue, but nope. Now I know, and I just can't do it. But I can definitely see the appeal, and I'm glad others really enjoy the experience.

I find myself suspending reality for musicals quite easily. People breaking into song and dance seems so natural even though it isn't. In non-musical productions (movies, stage), however, I'm more critical and complain about the teeniest things that don't make sense. I have a cousin who can't enjoy fictional movies (as opposed to non-fictional like documentaries) and especially science fiction movies because she doesn't find any of it credible.

No, I don't mind being made fun of, but with a song titled "F------God" in the mix, not something I want to see/hear.

West Side Story not my favorite, but I do love the music. I think I might like it better on the stage. Always annoyed me Natalie Wood was dubbed. Give the part to someone who can sing. "Somewhere" is a beautiful song.

I think the latest phenomenon of flash mobs is in part due to people in general wanting to "suspend belief and break out in song"

I like music, including music performed in theaters.
I like plays, and have had a season pass to the most "establishment" theater in Seattle for about 20 years now. I like the occasional non-traditional shows, like when they have circus or comedy or clown acts as one of their shows for the season.
But I'm not a fan of "musical theater", whether the operatic style, the Broadway style, the Disney style, or the Hollywood style. Strangely enough, I usually like the individual shows I get convinced to go see. I enjoyed Cats. I enjoyed Les Miz. But it's not really my thing.

Is that supposed to be comforting?
Perhaps in a parallel universe...
