What I've learned from local community theater is an appreciation of talent -- many do NOT have it.
In one local production of The Sound of Music, the only actor with any talent was a guy who played Max Detweiler, the "Nazi" talent scout/manager. Every time he appeared on the stage, he just lit up the auditorium. You could even hear the audience utter under their breath "Yes!" and sometimes, some clapping (before he even did anything that merited applause). And when he wasn't on the stage, you could hear sighs of boredom and frustration. We were all just trudging through the thick mud. It really said something about the local production when the brightest star of The Sound of Music was Max Detweiler and not Maria or Captain Von Trapp.

Going to see Sound of Music on the big screen tonight. One night only showings had my tickets for months. I seriously have butterflies. Spoiler alert: . . . They escape the Nazis. Yeah, by hiking up the Alps in their fancy lederhosen into Switzerland even though the Swiss Alps is nowhere near Salzburg. The Von Trapps didn't hike up a mountain; they took a train to Italy. But I guess playing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" during the scene would be very confusing. "Let's Ride the Choo-Choo Train" doesn't have the same magic. From Wikipedia: In the film, the von Trapp family hike over the Alps from Austria to Switzerland to escape the Nazis, which would not have been possible; Salzburg is over two hundred miles from Switzerland. The von Trapp villa, however, was only a few kilometers from the Austria–Germany border, and the final scene shows the family hiking on the Obersalzberg near the German town of Berchtesgaden, within sight of Adolf Hitler's Kehlsteinhaus Eagle's Nest retreat. In reality, the family simply walked to the local train station and boarded a train to Italy. Although Georg was an ethnic German-Austrian, he was also an Italian citizen, having been born in the Dalmatian city of Zadar, which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and later fell into Italian territory after World War I. From Italy, they traveled to London and ultimately the United States.[94]

I do know a guy who did hike over a mountain to cross a border. Ironically, he was hiking INTO Austria. He and his wife left Czechoslovakia by going on "vacation" to Yugoslavia. When the Yugoslavian border guards wouldn't let them cross into Austria, they parked their car near the border and hiked over a mountain into Austria. It took them two days, with one night spent out in the mountains.

I think The Sound of Music is tough to produce on the stage (and the screen) because you really need a knock-out talent for the Maria lead. If Maria is a dud, the whole production will feel like a disaster. This is a credit to Julie Andrews who set the bar so high, I'm afraid 99% of the actresses out there (*cough Carrie Underwood *cough) won't cut it.

Original Maria was actually Mary Martin. She was a big muse for many broadway musicals. Peter Pan South Pacific and sound of music to name a few.

I knew about Mary Martin. Unfortunately, I've actually never seen Mary Martin's performance so I can't judge her. Well, I CAN judge her if I were religious and catty and just an awful person.

Newsies was just amazing. More than worth the drive toTucson. And never have I felt a drive to Tucson was worth anything. Yes,can you imagine Doris Day, Shirley Jones or Anne Bancroft as Maria? ??. They were all considered. Julie just set the bar so high. Perfection. Anyone see Moulin Rouge? Interesting Sound of Music bit in that weird or brilliant film-haven't decided.

A film can be both weird and brilliant. I like Moulin Rouge! a lot.
