Bates is successful because she's fast enough to beat the block, many thanks to carlini. Gillis has the same type of speed and explosiveness. She'll flourish at UW.

There is more than one "UW", you know. On the west coast, at least, it generally refers to Washington, not Wisconsin. Unless you were just looking to suck in readers, that is. Shall I get out a tiny violin? While thankfully the OP changed the title to Wisconsin, you don't have the market on UW, so let's agree on Wisconsin and Washington, and not "UW."

Good luck, I'm not convinced gillis is guaranteed to start on Wisconsin team. I'm not convinced on Kriskova either. I know it wasn't an ACL, but knee injuries make me nervous. Lots of people putting her guaranteed, and I think that spot is the most vulnerable. I'm a total Debbie Downer when it comes to injuries: Since I've been watching wvb, Thompson seems to be the only one that fully recovered from an injury after surgery. We're just going to have to wait and see. And wait, and wait. 4 months and a couple of days. Sigh.

It's not just speed, though that really helps. Bates came to Wisconsin as a kid who was successful in prep because she could get up and hit harder than everyone else. She simply hit THROUGH the block. That didn't work so well in college, as she learned abruptly when the Badgers played Washington last September. Even with LC setting her quickly to the pins, she got stuffed more times than I can count. Bates chalked that one up to a learning experience, and worked diligently on hitting tools and high hands. She mixed it up more and more over the course of the season, which is why she continued to be successful. I've been watching what film I can find of Gillis. As someone said on the Wisconsin thread, she appears to have been successful in prep because she could get up, get there quickly, and hit over the block. Again, that doesn't work in college. LC will get Gillis plenty of one-on-ones, but Gillis also needs to develop the repertoire of shots that other successful college players have. The ball, as they say, is in her court.

Will Lauryn still face USC every year in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge?

Good luck, I'm not convinced gillis is guaranteed to start on Wisconsin team. I'm not convinced on Kriskova either. She was good enough and had improved so much that Fricano decided to transfer. That's pretty convincing IMO.

She was never a kid who was hitting harder than everyone else.

Fair. I did not see Bates at all in prep. I should have said it was my IMPRESSION that she was successful by hitting harder than everyone else. Whether she actually did hit hader than everyone else is a different story. I came to that conclusion because at the beginning of her freshman season, Bates seemed to have one mode: HULKSMASH! And it either beat the block or went over the block if the block was late, or it busted through the seams... or she got stuffed. I figured it must have worked for her in prep. She didn't really master the art of the tool shot, the line shot, the roll shot, etc. until much later in her freshman season. I do have to say that one of the best parts of last year, for me, was watching Bates grow up. I anticipate I will enjoy watching Gillis develop also.

win win for all. USC deep at OH, girl gets fresh start. Someone at USC now can play more, Wisconsin get a potential stud(if she can develop her passing).
