Clay Stanley fractured his finger in the Cuba match last night. Don't know how long he will be out, but with the strength that these men hit at, having to block would be painful, unless it was completely healed. The latest on Stanley is that he "only" dislocated his pinky on his non-hitting left hand. He is expected to play again against Puerto Rico.

Who is on the current NORCECA roster? I can't find the 2004 NORCECA roster on the USA VB site. From the recent reports I have extracted the following names (but only the players who scored are mentioned in the write-ups) Clay Stanley Riley Salmon Dave McKienzie Reid Riddy Gabe Gardner Lloy Ball Tom Hoff Brook Billings Ryan Millar I am assuming that Erik Sullivan is the libero? Dave McKienzie is new on the team from the World Cup Two World Cup players are not listed in the NORCECA write-ups: Jim Polster and Adam Naeve. I am assuming that one of them did not make it. Does anybody know more? Sulllivan is the libero, Polster and Naeve are out and Mckienzie and Wilson are in.

No problem guys.
US starters are Lloy Ball, Clay Stanley, Gabe Gardner, Reid Priddy and Hoff and Millar in the middle. Billings was filling in for Stanley after he dislocated his finger against Cuba.
Jose Quinnones or Victor Bird are not playing for PR. Angel Aja is setting. Esteves from Ohio State is their leading middle. Victor 'Vitito' Rivera and Ossie from BYU are the outsides. Hector is on opposite. Arcangel Ruiz who graduated from IPFW last year is also seing significant playing time

Is it me or does the PR team sound pretty good? Maybe a bit on the short-side with Aja and Ozzie but still should be decent. Of course they won't beat Brazil or Italy or even US but at least something to be proud of..... No problem guys. Its good to hear aja is playing. He is one of the best pure setters ive ever seen. Some of the sets he made in the 2000 championships were freakin amazing.
Does anybody know of a website for the Puerto Rican National Team with roster and all that stuff?

I just got out of USA-Canada game tonight. USA beat Canada in 3 but Canada could EASILY win the first two games if they hadn't miss that many serves, especially when the games were on the line.
USA is having problems with one outside spot right now. Beal is sure about Priddy (he played frickin good tonight) but he is going back and forth between Gardner, Salmon and Mckienzie. Dave Mckienzie saw some playing time tonight but he did absolutely nothing but errors on offense, terrible blocking and a couple nice serves in a row.
USA won the first two games after Clay Stanley ripped couple of serves on crunch time. I hope USA does not play like this tomorrow against CUBA, or a surprise might be on the way.
Watch out.

USA def. Canada 27-25, 30-28, 25-21
Canadian Press
Wednesday, January 07, 2004 CAGUAS, Puerto Rico (CP) - The United States swept past Canada 3-0 on Wednesday in a regional men's volleyball Olympic qualifying tournament.
The Americans earned the victory with scores of 27-25, 30-28, 25-21. The loss was the third in four tournament games for Canada, which registered its lone victory Monday against Mexico. "We improved a bit today and battled hard in the first two sets," said Winnipeg's Scott Koskie, the Canadian team captain. "Again we had opportunities to close out the sets and we didn't."
Paul Duerden of London, Ont., led the way for Canada with 13 points (12 kills, one service ace) while Murray Grapetine of Wetaskiwin, Alta., added 12 points (10 kills, one block and a service ace).
"I'm very proud of our team's performance," said national team coach Stelio DeRocco. "We battled hard right to the end but once again we did not capitalize at the end of the sets.
"The U.S. beat us because they did not make those mistakes at the end of the set."

Just a general observation, but does anyone think that the US (both men and women) are really good in those "win by two" point situations. Does anyone think that since the US goes to 30 in the college game and most other places go to 25, that the US has an advantage in taking a game a bit further than the 25 mark?
Comments and/or criticism is more than welcome.

Most, if not all, of the current players on the mens' (and probably women's) national teams played almost all of their collegiate career under the old sideout scoring system. If i remember correctly, it changed over sometime around the 2001 season (mens), and most of the player graduated before the change occured, or only played one year after the change took place. So the majority of these players didn't play in college the rally scoring to 30 format.
