Yeah, as soon as I saw that story, my first thought was, "Hate to say it, but this is a Darwin Awards situation." Wolfgang's point about dosage is valid, but in this case, they didn't overdose on the anti-malaria medication hydroxychloroquine. They took an entirely different substance, chloroquine phosphate. You don't need to have a degree in chemistry to know that just because two substances have somewhat similar names, they aren't the same thing. It's like swallowing a lithium-ion battery because your lithium medication ran out.

Sigh...at the end of the day, there is no cure for stupidity. And hence in essence why the Darwin Awards were created. Charles Darwin wrote in his momunmental treatise On the Origin of Species: "gradations in the perfection of any organ or instinct, which we may consider, either do now exist or could have existed, each good of its kind,--that all organs and instincts are, in ever so slight a degree, variable,--and, lastly, that there is a struggle for existence leading to the preservation of each profitable deviation of structure or instinct. The truth of these propositions cannot, I think, be disputed."

The truth of these propositions cannot, I think, be disputed." What a liar. He knew damn well that the truth of these propositions would be disputed. That's why he was going to wait until after he died to have it published, except Wallace independently came up with the same idea and Darwin wanted to retain credit for it.

It's good for them to die off but the most important thing is the TIMING of the death. In order for our species to get smarter and stronger, these idiots have to die BEFORE they procreate and have offsprings. Otherwise, it won't matter. They must be prevented from passing on their stupid genes. So, the earlier they die of stupidity, the better for all of humanity. Yes, "Darwin award" is an often misused phrase. If they already have kids then it isn't "natural selection" no matter how stupid their death was. I suppose it might prevent them from having MORE kids. But they have already passed their genes onto the next generation. A Montana man in his 40s getting hit by a car because he was wearing a ghillie suit at night in an effort to invoke a Bigfoot sighting is indeed a stupid way to die, but at his age there is a pretty good chance that he has already accomplished the bulk of his procreating. Thus he would be quite ineligible for a Darwin award.

Thus he would be quite ineligible for a Darwin award. This is not true. Humans usually invest a lot more in their children than just their genes. I'm in my 50s, and if I called my dad up and said, "I need some help, can you come by?" he probably would come by and help. Losing a parent used to be devastating to the chances of survival of a small child. It's still pretty bad. Now if a guy is a "love em and leave em" type who has a kid or two he's never seen, then yeah, dying early doesn't impact those kids much. It still restricts him from having any more kids though.

Ultimately, people are still dying to win a Darwin Award. As an interesting aside, what does COVID-19 do to the near term award level? Will stupidity rear its ugly head more frequently with more people at home with time to kill themselves or will this year's award level drop off because stupidity needs company?

I think this thread needs an update. Live....from Walter Reed Medical Center I mean, he's had at least 5 kids. No idea how many illegitimate ones on top of that. So from a Darwinian sense he's been evolutionarily successful.

This is why such pranks, which seem to be popular in Europe, should not be attempted in the gun-crazy US.

Not sure I can blame the driver for this one, or what it has to do with Darwin, but it was the best thread I could find (on the first page) without starting a new one.
