I don't think this is not true... The eventual winners of the eight-team strong Continental Qualification Tournaments starring the host country (Turkey) and the seven highest placed teams from the CEV European Ranking List – as of November 1, 2015 – not already qualified will also book their spot for the Olympics. This tournament will affect the rankings, but doing well in this tournament does not assure you a spot in the Olympic qualifier. www.cev.lu/News.aspx?NewsID=19157&I am not quite following your double negative, but in any case all I was trying to say is that the current Eurovolley Tournament does not grant any team the right to participate in the Olympics, just like the current NORCECA tournament, and that's why Serbia is participating this week. I think we are agreed, right? So since top 4 qualify for the later tournament in January to qualify for Rio. Does Serbia or does the 5th place team in this tournament take Serbia spot?

Europe does it a little differently. They will have an 8 team tournament in January based on their Euro rankings (not finish here, though they will pretty much align). Serbia won't be going to that tourney, instead all of their players will get a nice little break in their pro seasons.

Yup. Brutal. And 2nd and 3rd will get to go to Japan for the last chance tourney.

So the last chance tourney in Japan... How many teams can qualify there? Just the first place team? There are so many good European teams.

Turkey down 2 sets, and is down in the 3rd set. Very possible and likely sweep by Netherlands to reach the final.

I won't be surprised to see Netherlands in Rio and really competing for a medal spot. They have great players at almost every position.

It's crazy how much higher the level of play is at the European World Championship than at the Norcecas Championship.

It sucks that the 2 World Cup competitors have to play against each other in the semis. Russia and Serbia are my two favorite European teams.

Russia was up 2-0. Now it's 2-1. Lets hope Russia can close it in the next set and not have to repeat what happened in the World Cup which cost them a Rio spot.

I know others have suggested this, but I wish the OG qualification process was a little more logical. Something like having the winner of each pre-Olympic continental championship automatically qualify (Asia, Europe, NORCECA, South America, Africa) to get the global participation that the IOC / FIVB apparently wants, and then have one World Qualifying tournament among the next 16 ranked unqualified teams to select the 7 other teams to qualify from wherever they may be. Wouldn’t that adequately combine the desire for geographical diversity with the desire to have the best teams qualify? In such a system the CEV teams especially might not feel so unfairly left out.
Or am I woefully naive?

Wait, hasn't serbia already qualified? Are they just playing for bragging rights now?

For all intents and purposes, yes. Serbia has qualified. This Eurovolley Tournament is irrelevant in terms of the Olympics except to the extent a team earns enough points to climb into the top 8 CEV teams not yet qualified, who will then participate in a CEV Olympic Qualification tournament at the end of December / first week of January.
