Has a bigger impact on serving than hitting. You can adjust the trajectory of hits, but a hard jump float or jump top spin is already almost brushing the net in most cases, with a reduction in force required. On the other hand, Bricio should be familiar with hitting/serving at altitude (Mexico City).
UW has had fits playing at the mountain schools, with a roster composed of SoCal and NW flatlanders. This year they only have to play at Utah.

Preseason #22 Southern Cal will play @ Colorado and Utah this week. I have heard about how the high elevation affects the game as far as conditioning and ball trajectory is concerned..Is it true or just a myth? A feedback from those who have actually experienced playing at the high altitude would be great. Why is it noted USC is preseason #22 and not current #1 Women of Troy. USC with a lesser team swept the mountain schools there last season and Bricio was the PAC-12 POW that week. USC is better this season and both Colorado and Utah are worse. I expect an easy weekend for USC but weird things happen up there. UW has consistently had trouble in the mountains the last few seasons. I think USC shouldn't drop a set but we shall see what happens. The elevation hasn't seemed to affect Bricio before so I don't see why it would now. BigFanOfBigFan is just a troll. Having a rough season, too.

A friend notified me my name came up in this thread so I thought I might comment on altitude and golf. Golfing at 5,000 feet impacts a wedge about 5% more distance and a driver about 10% more distance. It is harder to a higher shot at golf shot at altitude, and the distance can vary significantly with temperature and humidity. Altitude does effect the serve in volleyball but I have seen several teams come to Colorado State and serve a tough top-spin ball while others have struggled.
I have also witnessed a significant difference from 5000 to 7000 feet when traveling to Laramie, especially when running. When we (Nebraska) played Colorado on the road we would work on short serves beause they are easier at altitude. In Lincoln we would more likely drive the ball deep. As I lose distance in my golf gang tome we are planning on moving to Vail and eventually to Leadville, Colorado where the pi\ublic golf course sits above 10,000 feet and it is not unusual to have a golf ball explode on a well-struck shot.
One final thought . . . To my knowledge this character named Wolfgang never lived in Fort Collins. I checked with several people in the volleyball community, (Tom Hilbert, Leslie Taylor, high school coaches, CSU faculty etc., and no one every met him. I think he is just a genial troll.

... I think it's amazing that one thinks one can get a sense of what another person is like from an online presence. I actually have the utmost respect for Terry Pettit, spoke with him once (he probably doesn't remember), and was his Facebook friend. Once he was my friend, I started to look through his (and other friends') photos, especially the old "retro" ones. I love those photos. My blog is filled with retro photos of bygone days from the late 1800s to 2000s, mostly in the 1940-1970 years. I commented on a few of Pettit's photos -- not snarky or offensive or anything like that -- and then he unfriended me. Broke my heart. As for Fort Collins, ask me any question about CSU or Fort Collins. Ask me something you can't find on the Internet but someone familiar with CSU would know. My daughter attended CSU. I visited frequently until I decided, "heck, might as well just live there and be close to her." So, I went ahead and got my Master's from CSU and lived off campus and shadowed my daughter from a distance. (Probably did wonders for her social life, having dad hanging around campus and wanting to meet for lunch and all.) Come on. Ask me anything. I was there from 2010-2013. As for Tom Hilbert, it's true I never spoke with him. Leslie Taylor is my friend on Facebook. And of course no one at CSU heard of me because it's not like Wolfgang is my real name. LOL! You think "(R)uffda" or "dorothymantooth" are real names? LOL! I'm not a troll here. But I believe a few people on a couple other boards (there's a Jane Austen board that's really irritating me) may think I'm a troll. I can't believe it. It hurts.

This is turning into a pretty interesting thread -- Wolfgang vs. Terry Pettit. I mean, who would have thunk it?

I have taken a low land team to play in 5800' to 6800' elevation 8-10 times during my career. This year I choose not to tell the team before the trip about the "effect". At our first practice I ask them for their thoughts. Jump float servers love serving there and top spin servers hated it.
