Last thought -of course late in tournaments coaches should do everything they can to win. Of course they should do all they can to qualify for Nationals. And of course no one should expect equal playing time.

Good article, and I agree with it 98%. It would be great if, as the article says, when the last offer was given to the 12 best player the message was, "Hey, we really want you to be on the team so you can push the other guys in practice. You probably won't see the floor much in games but you will get better at our club than you will anywhere else because of the kind of program we run and the boys with which you will practice." Sadly, I have just never heard of that kind of message being delivered ... ever. Most of you appear to have more experience with club and maybe other clubs at other age levels are delivering that message when they give an offer. What I have heard is, "You will be a starter for us." and then the kid rides the bench, rightly or wrongly, half way through the season. What is for sure wrong is to make that kind of promise on the front end. Maybe I just don't have enough experience, but if the programs do have that "you won't play much but we really want you on the team" conversation with someone before they accept, please let me know. And, if you have been around club for 10 years, you have seen kids who almost never see the floor. Which is 100% different than not seeing the kind of time he would like to see. I do mean nearly never. The article says that playing time is earned in this way, “I can promise you that if you work really hard & display a team first attitude, then you stand a great chance of playing but under no circumstance do I promise playing time." No where does the dude say "if you give us the best chance to win" He kind of implies that all you need is a team first attitude and hard work. I completely agree with that. Here is where I depart from the article. Coaches, you are obligated to coach the boys to get on the floor, unless you told them otherwise in the selection process. Regardless, coach them. You need to communicate and work with them so that they have a path to the floor, and everyone's path is different. There are plenty of games where the result will be the same if players 1-3 and 7-9 are on the floor instead of 1-6. Same for 4-6 and 9-12. We have all seen great practice players who don't translate to competition, perhaps because their coach only played the top 6, and they had the crappy luck to be #8 on the best team in the region, but they were never told that during the offer process. I don't think the cases of boys not seeing the court ever are very prevalent, and if they are attitudinal I understand them better, they need to be addressed with good coaching, but if a kid works hard and has a team first mentality, they should see the floor on a regular, not necessarily frequent, basis, especially the younger they are. And parents - ask about the club your son is trying out for. Find out what their policy is. Take the lead and if you get a bad vibe, regardless about how good a name the club has, look for the best place for your son. It might be on a better club where they only compete in practice. For others it might be leaning how to compete in tournament competition for a team that has less success. To address one of your points, I am aware of two separate situations regarding offers to "bubble" players during this year's tryouts at MVC. Different age groups and different coaches, so not something that just one coach did. In both cases, the players were given the option of taking a spot on the 1s team, where they would have less playing time but be on a more competitive team, or going to the 2s team where they would play more and probably be a starter, albeit on a less competitive team. Of these two situations, one player opted for the 1s team and the other chose the 2s team. Glad to hear that the players were able to choose the right situation for them. This probably isn't the norm, but it does happen.

I’m hearing people make the playing time discussion out to be a black and white situation, the kids either play or they don’t, but there's really a lot of grey area.
There are competitive teams and developmental teams (even within competitive clubs). On a developmental team, playing time should be more generously divided (but the expectation still should not be to be equal). A developmental team may not be as competitive, but will usually result in more playing time.
Even in the case of a competitive team, there are more competitive tournaments and less competitive tournaments. Even within a competitive tournament, there are some matches which are less competitive than others. In less competitive situations, coaches have the ability to play the non-starters and still come out with a win. In later rounds of a tournaments, more of the playing time will be given to the starters while non-starters may only see situational play. Coaches should be able to gage the skill level of their opponents and play a group of their players that will match up well and all players can be successful.

Let's ignore SouthportDad please. Southport 16's will be good again but will not beat MVC just like last year. They are a very good team that passes well and hits hard but don't have the size and that will be a challenge, especially this year. southportdad is just a kid messing with southport

Midwest Penguins 16's has a 6'8" outside hitter. Kid already has interest from Ohio State and Penn State. Possibly the most underrated player in the state. They could be a national championship caliber team with that weapon! How come I've never heard of him? What school does he go to? And if I'm not mistaken, schools cannot show intrest until junior year, this kids only 16s

To SouthPortDad: Aaron Hernandez will be back in the NFL before your kid has a chance at nationals. Normally I just read the forum but after seeing a post like this is annoying and I felt the need to comment. Your post adds nothing valid to the discussion. Last year my sons team took a poop on your sons team. I'm gonna be sure to find out who you are and who your kid is and my son will bounce over yours. Hey lets not get the kids involved...

And coaches can talk to players if they are on campus. There are other ways that I'm unsure of too.

99.9% sure of these; not sure if they are going with 10 or 12 this year. Stadick Szews Watry Sydnor Zeske Malala Derosier Pralle Campbell Christiansen Do they have another middle on that team besides Stadick? Sting website lists two add'l MB's on the 18's roster, i think both are from Middleton.
