Little Sander and Ben Patch looked great from time to time. There appeared to be lots of kinks to work out on both teams but Peoperdine ends up sweeping BYU. Unclear if Josh Stewart is going to start or Soren Dion-Kindem will take this spot. MB2 had a great serve as a freshman middle but he needs to connect on the offense better. #6 looked similar to Chase Ross and Scott Rhein in type-tooling the blocks for points. David W was awesome. He received well and served very well. #15 was a great libero. I was thinking the game would be relaxed and would be an easy win for BYU. It was more seriously contested than I expected, and Pepperdine swept BYU. Maybe Pepperdine won't be as bad as I expected.

Tarantino played as an opposite. His footwork looked faster and he looks toned than before. Service was ok last night from him, and did not see the consistency he had last season but he was still getting a few aces. Again, the biggest surprise was #19. David worziack played an outside and he reminded me of Sean Rooney in his play. He sees the court well, has the height and good receiving and prob a faster and more accurate service than Tarantino. Penning played MB1. MB2 was a freshman. MB2 needs to work on connecting with the setter. There was one rotation where Mb2(6'6'') the setter (6'1'') and an Colby (6'4'') was in the front. I think this may be the shortest Malibu roofing company to date. Ben Patch was hitting over these blocks..

Assuming the first set was the starting lineup for each team, who started for BYU?

It was hard to see who started without bib numbers on them. I recognized Sander, Patch, Tyler Heap (Setter), Evan Chang (LIB). Is Jake Langois supposed to be back and play?

I believe so (Langlois). Was he not out there at all? Surprised Heap and Chang started. (if that really is the starting lineup). Would've expected the libero from Coto de Caza and Robbie Sutton to set, let alone Langlois start @ the OH2. Tough though, since coaches most likely want to practice everyone at any given time. Hard to pin down who starters are...

BYU is going to be solid. No doubt about it. Once they get going with plenty more practices, Patch, Sander, and Laglois would be tough to stop. I don't think I saw Langlois. He is so tall he would stand out...

Yes, Pepperdine won the next three, but BYU was trying out different lineups - they weren't at all in full-blown match mode. Furthermore, not everyone on the BYU roster traveled. And - it should be noted that BYU easily beat Pepperdine earlier that morning...

Still, fun to finally get some volleyball action.

Agreed! Love preseason action. And nothing against the Waves - they'll be great this year as well! That's what I enjoy about them too. I get to see all the players that don't see much action during the rest of the year, and in interesting mixes and match-ups. Unfortunately, we don't get to see many of these here in Provo.

Thanks peppwaves and byuinsider for your comments. I can't wait to see how both teams look.

Getting a 2nd opinion REALLY changed the perception of how the sets really played out... Excited for the season to start! byuinsider: Who started that first set? Know why Langlois didn't travel?

From what I remember it was Sander, Meretev, Patch, Heap, Grosh, Hatch and Chang. I believe Langlois and a few others had school stuff to take care of. Probably a big midterm or something like that.

How did Chang look? Libero position is wide open for BYU
