I want Fields to play opposite. I know Keller likes the men's style/system so she could play as a six rotation oppo and not have to pass. But at the same time I doubt Weske is getting benched and I think USC will want/need Fields as an OH, but she'll have to pass.

It's more accurate to say Fields didn't pass much. Texas would play her in the back row when they wanted another offensive option on the court, but they tended to try to hide her when they did it. Your point is still valid in that she wasn't used much in that role, but her experience in passing at the college level is still different than Trubint and Middleton. She passed some...just not much. fields is great but if she couldn’t crack the passing line up at Texas that says a lot about her passing….. Who knows what it says? Eggleston gets all the 6 rotation slots, and there just aren’t any after her to speak of. It says more about what he thought of her serve than her passing. O’Neal played on the back row more than Fields did. After that he used another back row attacker in Parra who rarely saw time on the front row, the libero, the DS, and the setter. Maybe it speaks to UT’s poor development of Fields 6 rotation potential? Maybe it’s just unfortunate circumstances? In any case, that’s why there’s a transfer portal. To me it’s the same as when a quarterback loses the competition for the starting position, or an employee is told they’re not going to have an opportunity to supervise direct reports. Sometimes the best choice is to go out and find another opportunity somewhere. Maybe you’re not not meant to be a starting QB. Maybe you don’t have any business managing other people. Maybe you’re not cut out to be a 6 rotation player. But if that’s your goal and you’re not going to get a shot where you are, then don’t wallow and wonder what might have been later in life. Go seek out that opportunity somewhere else. Frankly, the COVID year is as much to blame as anything else. Without that Eggleston would be moving on and Fields would get a chance to compete for the 6 rotation. At least before Skinner transferred. It’s just better for Fields personally to move on. I don’t think anyone can say declaratively what her upside is as a 6 rotation player, least of all Fields herself.

I didn’t watch EVERY Texas match but I feel like I never saw her get set back there. Also it’s not like Parra lit up the world in SR so yes I would say it says something about fields passing

Whether you'd call Parra a back row attacker, she's certainly capable of it. I wouldn't say she got a huge amount of opportunities. Fields got more, actually. But she did get some, and she's certainly gotten plenty on the Mexican national team. But that's beside the point. The point is no one can say declaratively what kind of 6 rotation player Fields can become based on her time at Texas. Actually, that's not true. No one can say it and know what the hell they're talking about. That's a more accurate way of putting it. What can be said declaratively is that Fields is a potent offensive weapon. At her best, she's as good as anyone in the country at terminating the ball. She is going to quickly become a fan favorite.

I am so happy Wisconsin finally broke through to win a national title! That said, yeah, even with their depth on the outside with Demps/Orzol/Wrobel/Jardine, which is great and the best in program history, I am glad Fields landed further away at USC. Even if she had to be hidden in passing, which I am not at all sure is the case, a big upgrade to the WoT! At any rate, I think she will put up great numbers!

As an SC, I’m thrilled they picked up Fields. As a Team USA fan, I just hope Fields can really develop well to become a strong intl level player. I wonder if her aspirations are to play OH or OPP at the next level. IMO OPP would seem a better fit. So my preference would be to move Weske to the OH, both for the sake of Fields’ development and USC’s success.
Also I’m going to guess Fields plays 6-ro for WoT unless she’s abismal. Keller even gave Owes a chance at 6-ro and she was awful in the back court. Also SC might be lacking at DS if Hasting leaves. Barra is not very strong either.
