After a season of ups and downs for the Gators, the team came into the tournament with new fight and toughness that (should) have taken them to the Final Four. The "bad call" has been talked about at nauseam, so I won't say anything else about it, but I do know I could not have been more proud of the fight the Gators showed in Austin. A huge thank you to all of our amazing seniors, MacKenzie Dagostino, Simone Antwi, Nikki O'Rourke, Ziva Recek, and Gabby Mallette! Your contributions to this program have been awesome to watch and I hope your futures are full of success and happiness.
Looking ahead to the 2016 season, starters returning include Rhamat Alhassan, Carli Snyder, and Alex Holston. I would think the starting setter for next season will be Abby Detering. I believe Shainah Joseph will be moving to the left next season, so that will be interesting to see. The libero position is up for grabs, and out of the returners I would think Lindsey Rogers might get that position.
Other returning players include: Samantha Dubiel DS Taelor Kellum MB Allie Monserez S Ann-Lorrayne Bzoch DS
Florida brings in a freshman class that is large and talented: Morgyn Greer 6'3" OH (senior ace #33) Allie Gregory 5'6" L (defensive dandies HM) Cheyenne Huskey 6'2" S (senior ace #46) Darielle King 6'3" MB (senior ace #8) Rachael Kramer 6'8" MB (senior ace #28) Mia Sokolowski 6'3" OH (senior ace #39)
King will be MB2 behind Alhassan I believe. The OH2 spot behind Snyder could potentially go to Greer or Sokolowski, but they also have Joseph training to move to the left I believe. Not sure if Kramer or Huskey redshirts? If any Florida fans have any more intel, I am just going off my limited knowledge. I am excited for the future and believe 2016 will be a strong Gator team that will improve throughout the season as the freshmen gain more experience.

I hope Shainah plays the left side behind Carli. She pounds the ball like I've never seen. And she plays way above the net. I know her passing isn't that great though. And Mary has talked highly about Greer and Mia being good 6 rotation hitters. So that OH2 slot could be competitive behind Carli. Shainah will be a redshirt junior so she has two more years. I'm assuming her senior year they'll move her to the right once Holston graduates. Then that'll open up a spot on the left. But they'll also have OH Paige Hammons coming in 2017. Should be a competitive battle for that position. I would like to think Abby will be the starting setter.. But I don't think she's that great to be honest. The only match she's played where I thought she was good was when she came in against Arkansas. Every other game she's looked scared. Against LIU Brooklyn, all she did was set Carli on the outside. Even on good passes. I wouldn't be surprised if Huskey took over mid season. Darrielle will for sure be MB2. I think Mary will redshirt Rachael Kraemer. Libero is still up in the air for me. I know we had a lot of seniors and experience this year, but I actually think Florida will be stronger next year. I think the freshmen will really make an immediate impact.

It is dependent upon what Mary Wise wants for the future
Me personally I think that Husky takes over setting by conference play. I think that Kramer becomes a right side after red shirting and the former middle plays oh2 for next two seasons. That means they will need at least one ds to step up in addition to a new libero.

My lineup prediction: OH1: Joseph DS for OH1: Rogers/Dubiel/Gregory OH2: Snyder MB1: Alhassan MB2: King S: Detering RS: Holston L: Rogers/Dubiel/Gregory
I haven't seen video of Gregory yet, and I have no idea who will take the libero position. O'Rourke will leave big shoes to fill, her defense is amazing. Dubiel and Rogers will battle for the libero position during the offseason, and when Gregory joins, it will be war. Not sure of Bzoch, never seen her play, but maybe she can take a spot? I'm not sure between Huskey and Detering... I've never seen video of Huskey, but she has many impressive accolades. Detering will hopefully take the spot, she will be a junior and she has a fantastic serve. Maybe Monserez can surprise? Joseph in the OH1 position because she will be more of a terminator than Snyder. So excited to see King in action. Hopefully Holston's senior year will be a good one!!!

I think that Kramer becomes a right side after red shirting and the former middle plays oh2 for next two seasons. That means they will need at least one ds to step up in addition to a new libero. Coincidence or not, the last time Mary started a freshman setter in a 6-1 system was after the national runner-up year when Angie McGinnis came in, and Florida has never been the same since. Until then, Florida has a pattern that worked well — freshman setter understudied for two years and then took over. It didn't disrupt the relationships and chemistry that had built up between the returning setter and hitters, and it gave the freshman time to learn. As much as I loved Kelly Murphy's play, the 6-2 experiment was a bust. Cheyenne may be terrific from the get-go, but from what Abby has shown so far, she looks more than capable. She's not as fast as Mackenzie but sets more consistently and appears to have a good connection with Rhamat, which is extremely important. Overall, there are going to be growing pains. But if the back row can be shored up, Florida should be just fine.

Cheyenne Huskey did a very good job setting Brione Butler for Texstar the past season and she has some qualitues that Alahassan posseses. Granted last season they ran more of a 6-2 because they had Shannon Mikesky also setting who was injured this past year at Alabama
I think Florida will dip a bit at the beginning but should be better than they were this past season come conference play. Curious as to their non comference schedule.
Also i think Morgyn Greer is going to be better than her prep ranking by the end of her career. She is a stud but in a loaded roster.

The first 10 or so matches will be an adjustment, but after that, this team could be outstanding. If the libero, whomever it may be, is strong, I think this is a Final-Four caliber team again. I'm not terribly worried about the setting position, Detering would be solid.

Regarding the setter situation, had Detering already signed her LOI, and then Dagostino decided to transfer from Maryland with 3 years of eligibility? Not that recruiting rankings mean much, but I recall Detering being ranked very highly, and Dagostino not that highly.

Not that recruiting rankings mean much, but I recall Detering being ranked very highly, and Dagostino not that highly. According the the roster bios, Dag was ranked 49th in the aces and Detering ranked 52nd her year. I had thought Detering was in the 30s. so maybe that's a typo? I haven't renewed my PV subscription yet this year so I couldn't double check there. Anyway, I'm not sure if she had already signed when Dag transferred in, but I do know Detering enrolled early at Florida in Spring 2014. I think the normal signing period is in like mid to late fall, so she would have known Dag was there since she was playing in the Fall of the signing period. Someone mentioned it already, but it seems like the trend with Florida for quite a while has been having a setter backing up/redshirting first 2 years (or transferring in setters like Brauneis and Dag), and then taking over last 2 seasons.

Guys, I'm just so excited for next year's team! So much great talent coming in. But I'm sad about one thing- I'll likely be moving away from Gainesville after 7 years of being here, so I'll be really sad that I can't watch the matches live! Thank God for the SEC Network!
I agree with the above poster that Kramer might get red-shirted and then moved to the right a la Jen Hamson. That would be great! I'm okay with anyone playing OH. Carli will have one of the spots on lockdown until the youngins outplay her or something. She's got a ton of experience and has only been improving. She'll be a good OH leader next year. Shaianah is just a wonderful person to have in the gym, regardless of what position she's playing. Truly a selfless player. But I'd love to see her excitement and athleticism out there on the court! Not a huge fan of Detering and wouldn't be surprised if Monserez or Huskey took over.
Next year's gonna be an exciting one! Especially if the SEC continues to improve like it did this year. I hope there are lots of good matches and that they only help to challenge and push the Gators forward to a championship!

Oh just had another thought. What if they randomly did a modified 5-1 with Detering setting in the front beside Alhassan (so she can attack on 2), but then Monserez or Huskey setting from the back? That could be cool.

Is Monserez returning? I saw a volleyball special the other day where in most scenes where her face was recognizable she was blurred out? Did anyone else see that?
