When are University Games tryouts and competition?

Only 9 are going to school outside of CA.

Some players that you would expect to see on the roster are injured (Toppel) or are trying out for the Men's team (Keenan).

They report to Colorado Springs on June 27th, but I don't know when they are going to make the cuts.

The 24 athletes represent 14 university teams and three high school teams from throughout the United States. The players begin training on Friday, June 27 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In March veteran collegiate volleyball coach Arnie Ball of IPFW was been selected as the head coach of the 2003 USA Men's World University Games team. He will be assisted by Andy Read, who is currently in his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Long Beach State men's volleyball team.

Once a team is selected (12 players and alternates), it will compete in the Japan-USA Men's Challenge Cup in Japan—a series of six matches—from July 26-Aug. 3. The team will then return to Colorado Springs to begin final preparations for the World University Games.

I think the comment was made because some posters believe that volleyball begins and ends with the California borders (not necessarily where the players are going to school). It can only be good for our National Team if the most talented athletes from around the country are on the team.

Several years ago, looking at the YNT or JNT roster, greater than 90% of the guys on the roster were from CA. Not true anymore. The sport is growing and that is a good thing.

The three Hawaii players who were invited Thomas, Ching and Tuyay choose not to try out.

Thomas will attend summer school and train with the football team. Delano is on a full football scholarship.

Ching choose to stay home (Hawaii).

Tuyay will attend summer school and play beach volleyball in So Cal. Will graduate in June 2004 (in four years), and plans to attend Graduate School back East.

I think their trip to China last November, was enough of Asia for them.

I think Toppel's better now isn't he? Though Keenan and Toppel aren't offically named on the WUG team, if they're in Colorado practicing with the National team, they'll probably be picked to play on the WUG team when it's time to decide on a traveling squad. Might be some other players who fit that definition too.

I heard Toppel got hurt playin some pick-up basketball... something about ligaments in his knee... out 9 to 12 months... can anyone verify?

Toppel dislocated his ankle - ouch!! - out for at least four months
