Who would've thought Emily Maglio might have a great(er) shot at making AA as a beach player than making AA as an indoor? Also, she might make AA as a beach player BEFORE AA as an indoor player. This is something I would not have predicted in any lifetime.

Wahine in beach volleyball semifinals, face Long Beach State
Star-Advertiser Staff April 30, 2016
Perfect it wasn’t. But it was pretty close.
Top-seeded Hawaii dropped just one set in opening the inaugural Big West beach volleyball championship tournament with a 5-0 sweep of Cal Poly on Friday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine (14-8) move into today’s championship bracket semifinal against second-seeded Long Beach State at 6 a.m. The 49ers (12-12) won their opener 5-0 over third-seeded Cal State Northridge without dropping a set.
Both Hawaii and Long Beach State had first-round byes Friday. Today will be the third time the two will meet this season and the second time in eight days; the SandBows have won both 4-1, including on April 22 at the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational at Queen’s Beach.
Friday’s one dropped set came at the No. 4 flight when Ari Homayun and Hannah Rooks had to rally to defeat the Mustangs’ Raeann Greisen and Katherine Brouker 19-21, 21-11, 15-9.
“I’m really proud of the way they recovered and came back to win,” Hawaii coach Jeff Hall said. “Everyone played well today.”
Perhaps the best effort came at the No. 1 flight, where Katie Spieler and Emily Maglio dominated Jacqui Martin and Casey Carroll, 21-4, 21-9 in what Hall called “maybe the quickest dual match I’ve ever seen played.”
“They played unbelievable and a lot of the other team’s points were on our mistakes,” he added.
“We’re looking forward to playing Long Beach. They’re playing maybe their best volleyball right now and Coach Mike (Campbell) has them peaking at the right time. They recognize that their backs are against the wall and in all likelihood need to win this tournament to get into the NCAAs.”
Win or lose this event, Hawaii — No. 2 in the Ratings Percentage Index — likely would get one of the two at-large spots into next week’s inaugural NCAA championship at Gulf Shores, Ala. The tournament field will be announced on Sunday on NCAA.com at 4 p.m.
The Hawaii-Long Beach State winner advances to Saturday’s championship of the double-elimination event. The loser plays the winner of an elimination match between CSUN and Cal Poly. The winner of that match advances to the championship.

UH SandBows up against familiar foe UCLABy Cindy Luis, Star-AdvertiserMay 2, 2016 STAR-ADVERTISER / MARCH 15 UH’s Tai Manu-Olevao hit against USC in a SandBows- Bruins match in March. It was short. It remains to be seen if it will be sweet. Sunday’s online NCAA selection show for the inaugural collegiate beach volleyball championship lasted all of 10 minutes. When the sand cleared, Hawaii’s current ranking matched its seed — fifth — with the Rainbow Wahine scheduled to meet a familiar foe Friday at Gulf Shores, Ala. Hawaii (16-8), winner of Saturday’s Big West tournament, faces fourth-seeded UCLA (19-6) in the opening round (5 a.m. Hawaii time). It is the second of four quarterfinals in the eight-team double-elimination event. On the SandBows’ side of the bracket is top-seeded Florida State (29-1), which meets No. 8 seeded Stetson (26-7). The Seminoles’ lone loss came to Hawaii 4-1 at the Stetson Invitational on March 26 in Deland, Fla. USC, who won the inaugural Pac-12 championship earlier Sunday, will play Georgia State (25-8). Pepperdine (19-3) was the third seed and will face Pac-12 tournament runner-up Arizona (19-5). Play continues Friday with the winners bracket semifinals and two elimination matches. The double-elimination event has four matches on Saturday with the championship final Sunday. “We’re happy and honored to be in the field, and we love the draw,” Hawaii coach Jeff Hall said in a phone call from the team hotel in Costa Mesa, Calif. “We look forward to the challenge of seeing UCLA again, there’s a great volleyball history between the two schools, and we know it’s going to be a battle. “I think anyone can win this. In this (double elimination) tournament format, every one has a chance to win.” The Bruins have defeated the SandBows twice this season, both matches 3-2. UCLA is coached by former Bruin All-American Stein Metzger, who was inducted into the Punahou School Athletic Hall of Fame in March. Top-seeded Florida State has won its last 15 since seeing Hawaii. “We beat them pretty good,” Hall said. “They didn’t play to their potential but we played really well. “The beauty is we have film on them.” Hawaii has film on four other teams in the field, three that have combined to hand UH all of its losses: USC (5), UCLA (2) and Pepperdine (1). The SandBows also have a 4-1 win over Stetson. The team remains in California, with workouts scheduled today at Laguna Beach and Tuesday at Manhattan Beach. Hall did not have the final itinerary but was hoping to fly to Alabama Tuesday night. NoteTurner networks will televises some of the event, with truTV providing limited live coverage on Friday and the championship round Sunday on TBS. Live streaming coverage of every court in each match will be available on NCAA.com.

I have a bone to pick re. photos. Lots of bad photos and lots of bad selections of photos. For example, Tai Manu-Olevao isn't part of the team and yet, her photo is used for this UH-UCLA in the NCAAs article.

Curious why the SandBows were an "At-Large" selection. The winner of the BigWest Tournament doesn't receive an automatic? Sorry not to familiar with Beach Volleyball yet....
