What happened to London Chow? She was a beach-only player, though I did see her play indoor in high school here in So Cal.

Maglio’s beach volleyball career skyrocketing By Cindy Luis March 11, 2016 UH’s Emily Maglio bumped the ball at beach volleyball practice earlier this year.
Redshirt, 3, 2, 1 … the launch of Emily Maglio’s beach volleyball career has been nothing short of meteoric. The 6-foot-3 middle on Hawaii’s indoor team had an impressive debut at last weekend’s Pepperdine Kickoff Tournament on Zuma Beach, Calif., going 3-1 with two different partners at three different flights. Maglio’s best results came with All-American Katie Spieler on Sunday, when the duo went 2-0, picking up the Rainbow Wahine’s lone win over then-No. 2 Pepperdine at the No. 2 flight, then moving up to No. 1 and helping the SandBows to a 4-1 victory over Long Beach State. “As a coaching staff, we’ve talked about her at No. 1,” UH coach Jeff Hall said of Maglio. “We were thinking maybe next year, but, hey, why not now? Katie’s embraced it. Em’s embraced it. It’s not a done deal, but we’d like to try it for a while. “I think this spring is going to be a coming-out party for Em that will carry over to the fall. She’s phenomenal every day in practice. This is a chance for her to get better with all of her ball skills. She’s going to be one of the go-to players indoor for sure.” Hall, also the associate coach for the Wahine indoor team, was high on Maglio when he took over the beach team last season. Although Maglio redshirted as a true freshman, Hall already was envisioning her making the Olympic beach team for her native Canada as early as 2020. “She’s that good,” he said. “We had no problem putting her at the No. 1 spot.” For Spieler, playing as a graduate student, Maglio was her second partner of last weekend and the fifth of her four-year career. The 5-5 Spieler had played mostly at No. 2 the past three seasons and was at that flight Saturday with sophomore Lara Schreiber, losing tight matches to defending national champion USC and UCLA. On Sunday, Spieler-Maglio opened with a 21-19, 21-16 sweep of Pepperdine’s Kaity Bailey-Delaney Knudsen at No. 2, then traded places with Mikayla Tucker-Nikki Taylor at No. 1, sweeping Long Beach State’s Rachel Nieto-Kobi Pekich 21-18, 21-13. It earned Spieler-Maglio the inaugural Big West Pair of the Week accolade on Monday. “It was really fun playing together,” Spieler said. “I love that Emily is super hardworking, has a lot of ball control for a big player. It’s fun to battle out there knowing we’ll work hard every moment. “What might surprise people is her awesome ball control. She’s receiving serves, passing perfect. You are seeing aspects of her game that you don’t get a chance to see much when she’s indoors.” The soft-spoken Maglio would rather have her game do the talking. She did concede that it was a “big jump” going from redshirting to No. 1 last weekend. “But it was fun,” she said. “(Spieler) is so good, it makes it easy. It’s a good combination.” It will likely be the pairing that No. 5 Hawaii uses Saturday in its home opener at Queen’s Beach. The SandBows face Hawaii Pacific at 9 a.m. and TCU at noon in dual competition. But the pairings could change when Hawaii hosts No. 2 USC on Tuesday at the T.C. Ching Complex courts on campus. It’s part of the regrouping process the SandBows were forced to deal with after the loss of senior Heather Boyan following a hiking accident on Feb. 27. Boyan remains hospitalized at The Queen’s Medical Center but is expected to be released soon. Donations to Boyan’s recovery fund have surpassed the initial goal of $21,700 and “it’s been cool to see how the community here, the volleyball community here and nationally, have come together,” Hall said. “Our colleagues have given money, someone on Pepperdine’s team donated privately. SC said they were going to donate. Everyone last weekend felt bad for us, felt for what we had to deal with. “We’re all competitive, but when it comes down to it, something like this puts things in perspective. Life is precious. For our team, still getting to play volleyball has been very therapeutic.” Donations are being accepted at GoFundMe.com/HeatherBoyan. COLLEGIATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL At Queen’s Beach Today >> TCU (2-1) vs. Hawaii Pacific (0-0), 10 a.m. Saturday >> Hawaii Pacific at No. 5 Hawaii (3-1), 9 a.m. >> TCU at No. 5 Hawaii, noon >> Hawaii Pacific vs. Chaminade, 1 p.m.

Some observations:
1. Not to take anything away from Emily Maglio, I think Katie Spieler can make anyone look good.
2. How would Jeff Hall have any insights on the Canadian national beach team to say that Maglio would make that team? Short answer: he wouldn't.
3. Beach players always look cool with shades. That must be the draw.

One of the two of them (Maglio, Mitchem) will end up being the next AA. One if not both are likely to be moved around on the court next fall. Depending upon whom Dave moves, you'll be seeing a new AA formed. The 6'3 Sante Fe Christian gal will then end up backing people up ALL OVER THE COURT.

SandBows’ Boyan sidelined after falling in hiking accidentBy Cindy Luis, Star-AdvertiserMarch 2, 2016 JAM AQUINO / APRIL 18, 2015 Hawaii’s Heather Boyan (15) goes up to block Mikayla Tucker during a sand volleyball match on April 18, 2015 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex in Manoa. It was an unexpected reality check for the Hawaii beach volleyball team, which lost Heather Boyan to a hiking accident a week before the season opener. Boyan, expected to be part of the Rainbow Wahine’s No. 1 pairs team, remains hospitalized in stable condition after suffering multiple injuries in a fall Saturday while on the Ka’au Crater trail in Palolo Valley. Boyan fell an estimated 50 feet, according to Hawaii coach Jeff Hall, and “we’re counting our blessings. It could have been much worse,” he said. Information on the extent of Boyan’s injuries was not released due to health privacy laws, but she likely is to remain at The Queen’s Medical Center for at least the next few days. Her parents are expected to arrive from their Indiana home sometime this week. Boyan was hiking with friends when she apparently slipped while peering over an edge and fell into waters below a waterfall. She was set to play her second season for the SandBows as a graduate student; she graduated from Western Kentucky in fall 2014 following four seasons with the Hilltoppers’ indoor volleyball team. Boyan, 18-9 last year when playing with various partners, was scheduled to team with All-American Katie Spieler at No. 1 when third-ranked Hawaii opens the season this weekend at the Pepperdine Kickoff Tournament at Zuma Beach, Calif. Spieler, also playing as a graduate student, now will partner with sophomore Lara Schreiber at the No. 2 flight. Moving to No. 1 will be junior All-American Nikki Taylor and junior Mikayla Tucker. A GoFundMe.com page is scheduled to be launched shortly to help offset medical expenses. “Heather is still part of this team and we’ll continue to use her as an inspiration for the season,” Hall said. “We’re counting our blessings and will use it as a springboard into appreciating everything we have.” Hawaii opens Saturday with dual matches against defending national champion and top-ranked USC, and No. 7 UCLA. The SandBows finish out the event Sunday with host Pepperdine, ranked No. 2, and No. 4 Long Beach State. This is the inaugural season for Big West volleyball as well as the first year the NCAA is sponsoring the sport after four years under the AVCA aegis. ===== Beach Volleyball’s Heather Boyan Out For Season3/3/2016 8:24:00 AM UH release: hawaiiathletics.com/news/2016/3/3/womens-beach-volleyball-beach-volleyballs-heather-boyan-out-for-season.aspx?path=wsvb HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i beach volleyball student-athlete Heather Boyan will miss the 2016 season due to injuries suffered from a hiking accident over the weekend. The second-year graduate student was admitted to The Queen's Medical Center and is in stable condition. In her first season with the Rainbow Wahine in 2015, the Munster, Ind., native went 18-9 at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions, including a 17-6 mark with pairs teammate Lara Schreiber. She transferred to UH following four seasons of indoor volleyball at Western Kentucky, where she earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Boyan's family offset medical expenses. The page can be found here. The Rainbow Wahine open the season this weekend with the Pepperdine Kick-off Tournament, March 5-6 in Zuma Beach, Calif.

Top sand volleyball teams face offBy Cindy Luis, Star-Advertiser March 3, 2016 CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / CRUSSELL@STARADVERTISER.COM University of Hawaii’s Nikki Taylor practiced beach volleyball with Katie Spieler on Wednesday. The third-ranked Hawaii beach volleyball team’s official travel roster is 12 but the Rainbow Wahine will take a 13th along in their hearts when leaving today for their season opener in California. Second-year graduate student Heather Boyan remains hospitalized after Saturday’s fall from a hiking trail which will have her missing the season, including this weekend’s Pepperdine Kickoff Tournament at legendary Zuma Beach. Boyan was to be paired with All-American Katie Spieler — also playing a second year as a graduate student — at No. 1 but the accident forced head coach Jeff Hall to juggle his lineup. Spieler will be at No. 2 with sophomore Lara Schreiber, Spieler’s third partner in as many seasons. “I think the biggest thing that has helped my mind-set is remembering the great preseason I had with such a positive partner,” Spieler said of Boyan. “That has helped me go forward and take this adversity as an opportunity. “Playing (at flight) 1 or 2 doesn’t matter. I’m a very competitive person. The good thing is it’s a team sport and, whatever spot I’m at, I’m playing for UH. I just want to win.” Spieler finished with a team-best 30-10 record playing with Olivia Urban at No. 2 last season. She had an All-American season at No. 2 two years ago with Nikki Taylor, finishing 35-13. Taylor, at No. 1 last season with Brittany Tiegs, will remain in the top flight this year with junior Mikayla Tucker. The other pairings, still tentative according to Hall, have junior Hannah Rooks with sophomore Ka’iwi Schucht at No. 3; redshirt freshman Emily Maglio and freshman Ari Homayun at No. 4; graduate student Ginger Long and junior Hannah Zalopany at No. 5; and senior Tai Manu-Olevao with redshirt freshman Hi’ilawe Huddleston. It also is Taylor’s third season with a different partner but “great players can adapt to anything,” she said. “So much about beach volleyball is maintaining and sustaining partnerships. It’s about compatibility. “Zuma is an awesome setting and I’m really stoked to be playing there for the first time. Personally, I have high expectations for this season, have a good chance at being at the top.” It’s a trial by fire with Hawaii opening Saturday with defending national champion and top-ranked USC followed by No. 7 UCLA. On Sunday, it is host and second-ranked Pepperdine and Big West rival Long Beach State. This is the first year the sport is sponsored by the NCAA and the first year that the Big West will have a postseason tournament. “The field is incredible,” Hall said. “I don’t mind opening like this, we’ll know where we’re at right away and will be able to then train to fix any issues and test pairings. “Our goals this season are, one, to win the Big West; two, get into the NCAA field and, three, make the NCAA finals. That’s as far as we’ve thought ahead. Anything else will be gravy.” Pepperdine coach Nina Matthies said she was excited about being able to put together such an elite field. Her Waves won two AVCA titles, finishing second once and third last season. “After last year, I came home and thought about everyone’s scheduling and how we all sort of dance around each other,” Matthies said. “So I wanted to host a big event on opening weekend and invited what I think are the top 5 programs in the country … in hindsight probably biting off more than I wanted. “But I think it is going to be a great way to open this inaugural NCAA season, play everyone right out of the shoot, see where we all are, give us a measure, a gauge of what is to come during this season, and basically to just compete with the best. “Seeing as our sport is so different from any other — in that we have some teams with completely separate beach rosters, some with all indoor, some with combos — you just never know exactly who is playing until the season begins. It will be fun to see the teams and where and how everyone is playing.” Hawaii opens its home schedule March 12 with duals against Hawaii Pacific and TCU at Queens’ Beach. The SandBows host USC at the T.C. Ching Complex campus courts on March 15. NOTEDonations are being accepted for Boyan to defray medical costs at gofundme.com/heatherboyan. No. 5 Hawaii geared up for next week’s dual match with defending national champion USC by sweeping by Hawaii Pacific and TCU in the Queen’s Cup collegiate beach volleyball tournament Saturday at Queen’s Beach.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-3) dropped only one set out of 21 en route to 5-0 victories over the Sharks (1-2) and Horned Frogs (4-2). The lone set loss came at No. 5 against TCU when Ari Homayun and Tai Manu-Olevao needed to rally past Clare Ford-Blaire Pickens, 19-21, 21-18, 15-10 to preserve the sweep.

SandBows Open Home Slate On HPU, TCU Sweeps To Win Queen's Cup3/12/2016 10:10:00 PM Nikki Taylor v. Pepperdine UH Beach Volleyball Claimed the Queen's CupExcerpt: "HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball team made a sound showing in its home-opening event at Queen's Beach on Saturday, coming away with an all-around dual-match sweep of both Hawai'i Pacific and Texas Christian (TCU) to claim the Queen's Cup. In their first on-island matches of the 2016 season, UH defeated both HPU and TCU in 5-0 sweeps in both rounds of the Queen's Cup, which also featured local foe, Chaminade. The Rainbow Wahine drew further inspiration from the presence of recently-injured teammate, Heather Boyan, who spent time around the squad in the team tent throughout the day. The 'SandBows' won 20-of-21 sets and 10 straight matches en route to the dominant victory on their home sands. Leading the way were senior captain Katie Spieler and redshirt freshman Emily Maglio at the No. 1 slot. Maglio's dominant net presence and Spieler's sterling defense was a stellar performance for beachside onlookers. The pair has now won four consecutive straight-set matches and are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. For the first time together this year is the No. 2 pair of local junior second-team indoor All-American Nikki Taylor and german-born Lara Schreiber, who followed suit in the victory column. Taylor's powerful presence at the net and Schreiber's sets propelled the team to two consecutive two-set victories and a promising start to their new partnership. Sophomore Ka'iwi Schucht, junior Mikayla Tucker, junior Hannah Rooks, senior Ginger Long and freshman standout Ari Homayun all went 2-0 on the day in varied pairs as the SandBows looked sharp across the board at the beach today. Other notable performances were turned in from senior Tai Manu Olevao, who scored her first point of the season in the No. 5 match versus TCU and local-product redshirt freshman Clare-Marie Anderson, who scored the first point of her beach career early in the day against HPU. The SandBows are readying for a big week hosting a rematch with the defending beach, and current No. 2-ranked Southern Cal and reigning indoor national champion Nebraksa. UH hosts televised home matches under the lights at the Clarence T.C. Ching Courts on Tuesday versus USC (March 15) and Sunday versus Nebraska (March 20). Those events will sandwich two days of exciting competition back at Queen's Beach during the Hawai'i Invitational this upcoming Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, featuring a field of USC, Nebraska and Loyola Marymount." I do wonder if C.J-L (newly mantled AVCA president) isn't also in Hawai'i prepping for Iowa State's own Beach program. Nebraska could possibly have some influence upon Hawkeyes.
