I felt like I was the only one following this tournament via twitter yesterday.
I wonder why they have pairs tournaments in the first place if the results don't count toward the team's W-L record and the NCAA doesn't sponsor it as a championship. Perhaps that's why UCLA didn't have their best players on the sand yesterday. They're saving them for the duals today.

Well, Hawaii falls to UCLA, 2-3, with Long/Tucker and Spieler/Maglio getting the only two UH wins.
This, of course, blows.

Taylor/Schreiber defense and movement on the court isn't strong enough to consistently win at 1 or 2.
You can count on Spieler/Maglio for a point at 2.
3,4,5 are fairly consistent at getting 2 points and are the more important pairs in my opinion. Not a lot of teams are deep enough to beat Hawaii at 3-5. There are a lot of teams with very strong 1s and 2s.
Key is #3, Rooks/Schuct. When we win at 3, we usually win the match.
Not sure if there is an answer to #1 without really screwing up the other pairs.

Does anyone think team captains go up to a teammate and say, "Hey, you're not pulling your weight around here!" Can you imagine Katie Spieler saying that to Nikki Taylor?

What a coincidence that the two pairs (Spieler/Maglio, Long/Tucker) that won the Gold and Silver brackets in the Outrigger tournament were the only two victors in the dual meet against UCLA.

Long/Tucker duo is awarded the Big West Pairs of the Week. So far, Taylor/Schreiber are the only pair from Hawaii without a Big West Pair of the Week Award. The award could've easily gone to Spieler/Maglio but let's not be greedy; they've won two already. www.bigwest.org//story.asp?story_id=19052
