Another UH pairs team honored
By Star-Advertiser staff
April 5, 2016
The Hawaii beach volleyball team earned its fifth consecutive Pairs Team of the Week award on Monday when Ginger Long and Mikayla Tucker were honored by the Big West.
The duo went 5-0 in last week’s Outrigger Beach Challenge, a tournament that included both pairs and team competition. Long-Tucker won the Makai Bracket for flights 4-6 in Friday’s pairs event and won both matches in Saturday’s duals, where Hawaii swept Arizona State 5-0 and lost to UCLA 3-2.
Hawaii has won all five weekly honors given out by the Big West this season.
The loss to the Bruins had the SandBows trading places with UCLA in Monday’s AVCA Collegiate Beach Top 10, Hawaii (10-6) to No. 5 and UCLA (12-4) to No. 4.
Despite losing to UCLA last week, Pepperdine (14-1) remained at No. 1. USC (17-2) and Florida State (16-1) also kept their spots, with the Women of Troy at No. 2 and the Seminoles at No. 3.

Last season, Jeff Hall remarked to the press about the high upside of Emily Maglio's beach game and how she improved so much in such a short amount of time. But I saw that she wasn't on any of the flights. At the time, I remember thinking that Jeff Hall was just saying nice things about Maglio because she's a nice girl and he wanted to encourage her. I mean, he's not going to say, oh she's really piss poor. So despite all the rave reviews of Maglio's game, I didn't really believe it. Fast forward a year and she's on the #2 flight (#1 flight on some matches). I guess Hall wasn't blowing smoke after all.

UH stays at No. 5 in beach poll
By Star-Advertiser staff
April 12, 2016
A bye week did not affect Hawaii’s rank, as the Rainbow Wahine remained at No. 5 in Monday’s AVCA Collegiate Beach Top 10.
Defending AVCA national champion USC replaced Pepperdine at No. 1 after the Women of Troy (19-2) edged the Waves (15-2) last week 3-2. Florida State (20-1) stayed at No. 3 and UCLA (14-4) at No. 4.
Hawaii (10-6) hosts Boise State today at the Ching Complex courts at 5 p.m., the regular-season home finale.

Hawaii’s Long gets to enjoy another senior sendoffBy Cindy Luis, Star-AdvertiserApril 12, 2016 STAR-ADVERTISER / 2015 Ginger Long put down a kill during practice at the TC Ching sand courts. Today, UH plays its regular-season home finale against Boise State. Culture and education. It is reflected in the advanced degree process for Ginger Long, where the graduate student is finishing a master’s in educational administration with a master’s certificate in Cultural Preservation. That duality also is reflected in Long’s two-sport career of indoor and beach volleyball at Hawaii, and where she’ll have a second senior night sendoff tonight. “It’s pretty cool,” said Long, whose other senior celebration came in the final home match of the 2014 indoor season. “I think both the indoor and beach teams have been fantastic teams with a great group of girls. COLLEGIATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL Today, 4 p.m. Ching Complex courts Boise State (4-3) at No. 5 Hawaii (10-6) “I ended my indoor career on a good note and it’s a good feeling getting to finish like this with beach. I’m getting to play a lot and it’s been awesome.” While the Kamehameha-Maui graduate was used mostly in a reserve role during three indoor seasons — she redshirted as a true freshman — Long has played in key role for the fifth-ranked SandBows (10-6). Playing with Mikayla Tucker the past 15 matches, the duo has gone 12-3 and puts a seven-match win streak on the line against Boise State in the regular-season home finale tonight at the Ching Complex courts. “Ginger’s had a great season and has had some great wins for us,” Hawaii assistant coach Evan Silberstein said. “She’s a talented athlete and great competitor. She brought a lot of maturity when she returned this season. Long played three beach seasons before taking last year off to complete her undergraduate degree. Head coach Jeff Hall was glad that she returned for a final season. “It’s been nothing but positives,” Hall said. “She’s a really great athlete who wants to win badly, wants to win every drill, and she’s been helping us win big matches.” Long is one of three Wahine who will be honored tonight. The others are All-American Katie Spieler and Heather Boyan, the latter who is still recuperating from a serious fall suffered in February that ended her career. “I am really excited to see what our legacy will be,” Long said. “I want to leave the ingrained sense of hard work 24-7. You see that with Katie on the court and Heather in the weight room. That’s what I hope we leave.”

I'd like a progress report on Heather Boyan.
Is she at home in Indiana or Hawaii? Does she need surgery? If so, what kind of surgery? What parts of her body are in bad shape? Is she in rehab? What is her rehab regimen? Is she taking time off from school or is she still attending classes? Will she graduate on time? Will she return next year with the Beach Bows? (Unlikely, given that she'll go through senior night.) Is she still in pain? How exactly did the accident happen? Was it her fault? What does she hope to do in the future, i.e., career-wise? Will she return home to Indiana or try to live on the islands?

UH tops Boise State in sand volleyball season finaleBy Cindy Luis, Star-AdvertiserApril 13, 2016 COURTESY PHOTO “The goal is to get better every time out. For us, every match is do-or-die, our focus is that every team we play is the best in the nation.” - Katie Spieler, UH SandBows team captain It began with Ginger Long’s match-ending kill and finished with Katie Spieler’s continuing her quest to reach 100 career collegiate beach volleyball victories. The two seniors helped get their own party started Tuesday night as No. 5 Hawaii topped Boise State 4-1 in the regular-season home finale at the Ching Complex courts. Long teamed with Mikayla Tucker at No. 5 to defeat Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Laney Hayes 21-9, 21-10 for the Rainbow Wahine’s first point and Spieler and Emily Maglio capped it with a 21-11, 21-14 victory at No. 1 over Hannah Hubbard-Maddy O’Donnell. Spieler-Maglio improved to 14-1 as a pair and Hawaii to 11-6 this season. “The goal is to get better every time out,” team captain Spieler said. “For us, every match is do-or-die, our focus is that every team we play is the best in the nation. “I’m really proud of our team. We came out and did what we needed to win tonight.” Spieler, the winningest player in the program’s five-year history (95-39), likely will reach the century mark by the end of the month. Hawaii closes out the regular season with next week’s Outrigger Resorts Invitational at Queen’s Beach, a field headlined by No. 1 USC, and the inaugural Big West tournament April 29-30 at Huntington Beach, Calif. Then, if all goes as planned, to the inaugural NCAA Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala., on May 6-8. “We continue to work on things, to get better every time out,” SandBows coach Jeff Hall said. “Our seniors have been an amazing group, part of the foundation of the program. “They’re leaving a legacy of commitment and hard work. They’ve done everything the right way.” The trio — all playing as graduate students — included Heather Boyan, whose career ended in February after suffering multiple injuries in a fall while on a hike. She was 18-9 last season. Long, part of the first beach team in 2012, is second to Spieler in career wins with 70. She and Tucker won their eighth in a row. Hawaii’s lone loss came at No. 2 when Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley turned back Nikki Taylor and Lara Schreiber 21-19, 7-21, 15-12. Baugh, the Broncos’ lone senior, was also honored Tuesday night. Boise State (4-4), a third-year program, is playing a condensed schedule with all its matches in April and the first 12 on the road. The Wahine just came off of their first BYE week of the season after the No. 4 UCLA Bruins broke their seven-win streak by defeating UH, 2-3. The near sweep of the Broncos proved to be a good way to send off the seniors at the T.C. Ching complex. “I want to win every game, tonight’s pretty special though,” senior Katie Spieler said. “I just want to take it in and be grateful to play here one last time. I’m thankful to play with Emily [Maglio] and thankful to play for UH and the state.”" Full story: www.kaleo.org/sports/sand-bows-secure-senior-night-win-over-boise-state/article_e3c47b66-0146-11e6-b73b-37dd2e4e09d8.html

4/13/2016 8:15:00 AM Seniors Heather Boyan, Ginger Long and Katie SpielerExcerpt: "HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball team (11-6) wrapped up the home court season and celebrated the careers of three senior 'SandBows' on Tuesday evening at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, knocking out the 4-1 Senior Night victory over Mountain West foe Boise State (4-4). The SandBows had a much to celebrate as seniors Katie Spieler and Ginger Long took to the Court at Ching Complex for one final time versus the visiting Broncos, securing the 4-1 victory as they cruised to straight-set victories in their respective pairs. Joining Spieler and Long in their senior salutes was Heather Boyan, the Chicago native and former standout at Western Kentucky who joined Hawai'i last spring as an indoor convert and graduate student. Her rise on the squad since arriving was remarkable all the way to No.1 position last Thanksgiving in the inaugural Pac Rim Championships. I'm really disappointed that Adrianna Culbert of Colorado State decided to go to South Carolina for grad school and beach vb. I would've liked to see her at Hawaii. There's no known connection between the two. I don't even know if she was looking at Hawaii. I just know she's a versatile player who could be an asset to any team she joins.
