uci was up 9-5 in the fifth and tried their best to choke and give UCLA the game but UCLA kept making errors.
That was a pretty ugly 5th game.
Up to the 5th game where they went up 9-5, UCI looked like they wanted it more. UCLA did not look very inspired. Ma'a did not look like his normal self.

If healthy Hershko and Saeta would both start.

Crazy scores (3-2; 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24, 20-18). Kyle Russell and Jason Agopian really stepped up along with Chakravorti (S).

The stats make it look like UCLA went to a 5-1 partway through the match; is that true? How'd it look?

They won the second set with it. Not sure why they didn't stick with it, fell asleep watching.

A few things from the match tonight..
When Kyle Russell goes, UCI goes. The energy was lacking from UCLA tonight. The 5-1 that UCLA ran was great at times, but it looked like Hagen came back in because of setting problems by Micah. The battle at the net with Stahl and Agopian was fun to watch. Hodges came up clutch tonight. UCLA have some good outsides, but they can never seem to find a consistent rhythm. Dante outset Micah. (Disclaimer, I only mean that he did tonight. Micah's location seemed off and Dante constantly got his hitters in one on one spots, or with no one up).
I think UCLA will bounce back, but that was not the best showing from them after splitting at Hawaii.

UCLA went to a 5-1 with Ma'a setting and Hessenhauer hitting Opposite. Then, in game 4, they put Hagen back in, but still went with a 5-1 with Hagen setting and Ma'a hitting Opposite.

Losing is Pauley is not good. This may drop them down to the 4-5 range where a few coaches already had them
However, I can see this Bruin team losing at least 3 more times in the year. They are a young team and it is a long season and they seem to have a lot of moving parts. That takes some figuring out.
The same goes for the L. Beach team as far as youth who will hit some bumps.

UCLA had been lights out in game 5s until now. The way they came back from down 5-8 at the turn to tie it at 13 made me think they were going to pull it out. But as Rob pointed out, Russell was on fire. His game-ending ace was huge in the third set. He was playing well all night, but that was a turning point where he was not going to be denied.
Set 5 had a ton of service errors and unforced hitting errors until about the 12s, and then both teams seemed to get into a we-are-not-going-to-lose mentality. I think the biggest difference was that UCI dug in the fifth and UCLA did not. A couple beach roll shots dropped on the UCLA side while six people stayed on their feet. Meanwhile, on the UCI side, people sold their bodies out to get to balls.
Have to also agree with Rob that Dante Chakravorti looked comfortable at setter and played an outstanding match. That is what UCI needed more than anything, because up until then it was clear that without Saetta this team was going to struggle to make the MPSF playoffs. This shot in the arm may be exactly what they needed. Also want to note that Hodges stepped in once again to play pretty well. His serving was huge for UCI, although he had a target on his forehead whenever he lined up for serve receive.
On the UCLA side, this match exposed them for not having a thunderarm go-to hitter. They have some very good hitters, but no star to help them out of a funk. They have been winning because of very smart setting, solid blocking, and a lot of uncontested (or one-on-one) swings.
For UCI, they need to build on this win. While they miss Hershko's arm, Pikula's backrow defense has been a nice plus. He seemed a bit shaky on serve receive last night, but usually has looked great. Hopefully Saetta and Hershko return soon, so they can play their way back into form before the playoffs start.

Did we ever figure out what's wrong with Saeta? I noticed him in a polo and shorts on the bench last night.
