I really wish that at some point Sheila Shaw could win big ten POW... She has 20 kills, hitting .459, with 4 blocks in just 3 games...
Wisconsin up 29-16

IU dominated game four, winning 30-22. Then, the Badgers won the fifth game 15-9 and took the match. It was the worst passing I have seen since a JV football game, or maybe Nebraska-Kansas State in football. Ugh. Simpson set most of the match after game one, although Lorenzen came in at the end of the fourth game when it was out of hand. IU had 10 aces and 8 errors, I think, while the Badgers had 5 aces and 14 errors. Not good passing on either side. A ton of blocks by both teams. Shaw was contained after the third game, but the Badger passing was good in the fifth, allowing them to take the match. Not a pretty effort for the Badgers. The block was solid, and the back row defense was pretty good (as was IU's for much of the match). Shaw looked dominant in the first three games. Still, poor passing and hitting errors almost did in the Badgers tonight. IU didn't get much going offensively and had a lot fewer kills on the match. Pollom had the highest percentage, I would guess, but IU's poor passing limited her swings. Taylor Reineke blocked her a few times as well; Reineke seemed really fired up tonight and had a lot of blocks and I think the last two kills of the match. Anyway, it is good the Badgers won, but they will need to play much better to beat Purdue tomorrow night.

Tonight I had a company with me so I wasn’t much focused but at a certain point I lost Badgers lineup: KL started and was subbed by the end of 1st. Got back sometime in 4th and didn’t start game 5, M Mills started, didn’t play games 2 and 3, saw her again occasionally in 4 and 5. Carlini started at OH and was taken out for Weidner. Showed up again while Weidner was subbing back row for Mierotto. Odental was not receiving at the beginning but later on was in the reception line. I think #6 (name) was subbing for her back row. Looks like both MS’s and the L were the only players that kept their positions through the match but again I wasn’t watching very carefully.
It was a weird game. It seems both teams were looking to break their school records for most unforced errors in a single game.

I agree it was a strange match. I think you had the subs right except for the back row. Amanda Berkley (#6) played back row for Aubrey in the first two games, but she struggled and got subbed. I think they used Mills (who often subs in for Odenthal in the back row, but didn't after some point early in the match tonight) and Weidner in that slot later in the match, but none of them had much of a match in that rotation. I think I saw Odenthal had 17 digs. Carlini didn't have as good of a match as she did in the matches last weekend. I thought Coach Waite was a little quick in subbing Weidner for her, though. She came back later in the match and played okay. I think the L2 position is a key barometer for the Badgers; if the player there (Carlini or Weidner), is having a good match, the Badgers tend to play really well. If she gets subbed, it is a clear sign of trouble for the Badgers, although I am not sure it is always their play that is the reason for the team's struggling and the substitution. Anyway, I hope someone can establish themselves at the setter position, although it would help if the passing was better on a consistent basis. The Badgers got a lot of hits blocked in game one, but Lorenzen didn't have much to work with at times. You could say the same for Simpson in game four. In games two (after falling behind 8-2), three, and five, though, the Badgers looked good. At least they were good at the end.

Looks like the Badgers are going to be doing the setting by committee deal for a while. Neither setter seems to be able to take the bull by the horns and run away with the full-time job.Pete has the quickest trigger in the West...er, North right now subbing in players when they struggle and resubbing in the originals for their replacements when they struggle.
So far, with some smoke and mirrors, (and some overwhelming blocking), the results have been decent. I must say though, that watching them play makes riding a roller coaster seem very calm by comparison. Get out the Mylanta and strap in, it's going to be a wild ride this year.

I think that watching the Badgers this year is causing me to exhibit signs of manic depression. They don't tend to make anything easy, but they really got focused in the fifth game last night, finally. I am really beginning to wonder if all the subbing is helping much. The Badgers got blocked a lot in the first game last night, but I thought the problem was that the passing was bad, although I admit I am not good at evaluating setters. I am beginning to wonder if the quick hook is really helping much, although Waite had to try to find someone who was on in the back row last night, even if all his options really didn't work too well. I do think that Carlini should be playing all the time. Weidner might be better suited to being a DS than being the sometime sub at OH. Then, both of them could focus on their roles and not worry about being pulled if they aren't playing well (or the team isn't). Carlini did not seem happy at all about being taken out of the match last night. Good. It is nice to have players who really want to be in the match. I wonder who will start at setter tonight. I hope that person plays the whole match. That would be a good sign.
