That can be just as effective as anything else. How is it more effective than putting it up high or trying to move it out to the corners? Either of those will give your team a chance to get back in position when they are scrambling instead of looking up and seeing a hit coming down on you. I cannot be convinced it is ever a good idea unless you are on sand. As a setter she should have better awareness than that at any rate. If your team needs time to recover, then yes you should go deep or high. But a good short ball can cause transition to be disrupted.

Now Al Michaels says they are going LIVE to beach vb, but I watched this match a couple of hours ago on the nbc app. What the......... Live on the east coast, but delayed three hours out west. See the "Watching the Olympics" thread for other options.

Post match thoughts:
The passing and setting needs to be better. Play felt erratic like they never settled in. What's going on with our serving? That is supposed to be a strength way too many free points given away.
Serve receive felt off and a few communication errors. It's the first match so hopefully they clean that up. Glass needs to put her hitters in better position. I know that tempo is a key for this team and embracing a quicker offense gets you more 1v1 or 1vNone opportunities but it does no good when the sets are out of place and too low.
Positives for me were Foluke. She is our best player on the court, her hitting, her blocking, she is my MVP for Team USA we need cause she is virtually unstoppable when put in the right spot and even out of system finds ways to get it done. Loved Larsons leadership. When she was talking on court to the team, that had been lacking in the past glad she is talking to the team.
On to the next match, against a team better than PR we drop a set or maybe even lose this match. I expect Karch to have the girls better prepared as they move forward.

Awesome. I got to watch last 15 minutes of a bike race, an interview with a rifle shooter, lots of swimming, and slow motion turns in swimming and now rowing. All this when it said Women's VB would be live. Gonna be a frustrating 2 weeks. It is live on nbcolympics.com . Forget TV...if you live on the West Coast.

Low setting to me is a plague all over volleyball. I get the speed factor, but you can set any ball, any speed at any height. Why negate your size, jumping and physicality by setting low? All these kids jumping over 10 feet, and they never hit a ball over 9.

I thought Hill was the difference maker today. Without her point scoring we would have been in deep trouble.
Where are the stats?

While the US sort of "squeaked by" today, they (and PR) looked better than most of the other teams that played today. I turned off two of the others after a set and went to the beach because they were so slow and uninteresting. PR is a very good team and the US handled them

I will say I think our middles took more swings today than all of WGP. With our speed that will make our offense unstoppable

All these kids jumping over 10 feet, and they neverĀ hit a ballĀ over 9. I agree that the sets can be higher and still keep the tempo but timing becomes so critical. We see it on the men's side, but our women don't have the same quick twitch jump out the gym muscles like the men (or like sorry for mentioning her name...Destiny Hooker). If the timing's off, that ball sails way past the antenna by the time the hitter gets up.

A setter on a National Team should be able to set, to the capability of each hitter.

Not sure I have EVER seen a high level team back set this poorly. Yikes! I love our national team, but I agree that the setters Lloyd and glass are a result of the dumbing down of USA setters. There is no deception and glass has set to the middles on back sets and they get blocked because she telegraphs it. If our hitters weren't this good, we would be upset. Karch, with all his success, is just another hitter who does not appreciate the fine art of setting. I hope this is a joke. Karch was a great setter. Anyway "appreciating the fine art of setting" has nothing to do with coaching setters.
