Although he uses substitutes sparingly, U.S. Men’s Head Coach John Speraw said he was ready to do so against Russia. Besides Priddy, he also brought in outside hitter Thomas Jaeschke to finish the second set for Taylor Sander, who still finished with 17 points.
“I think it really took so much for us to come back and play after the disappointment of the Italian match (a loss in the semifinals),” Speraw said. “I was watching our guys in the first two sets… I could empathize with where they were. It was really, really hard. But before the match started, I had a pretty good suspicion that that would be the case and that we would have to go to our bench. I was prepared to do that early and did.” ........ Imo This team IS going to be incredible the next 4 years.

Gianelli wasn't shanking third of his sets. A double and 2 traps in his last 5 sets. Traps can be overcome, and this was an aberration not a pattern. Russell's an unreliable passer period forever.

Are you really patting yourself on the back for getting one right? I'm more sad people including Speraw can't see it, trust in it over a young grad who's proven to be timid in clutch moments. Wait, wasn't that the entire justification for including Kawika over Shaw?

Proof yet again that you need experienced Olympic veterans on the floor. Lesson learned, don't be foolish, USAVolleyball and coaches
And congrats to the men.

Jaeschke in and served off the court and quickly out. It is interesting hearing that Sanders was the best receiver in the whole tournament and by far the best on the team. Interesting because all I read on this website is that he is terrible. People here have an irrational thing against Sander. They don't show passing stats on the broadcast... Ergo people here are terrible. By the way, I think the team needs Sander. He's a great receiver/passer, a very weak area for us. They can't rely on Shoji all the time. Hello???

Question, how do you become an "experienced Olympic Veteran"? with out playing in the Olympics? These guys learned a ton. Very proud of this team.

Hindsight is 20/20, but sure wish Priddy had been in against Italy.

You become an experienced Olympic vet by having BEEN to the Olympics. Duh. Knowing what the pressure is like and how tight the competition is is crucial in life-or-death matches. Priddy knew how to perform under pressure. So that means keeping your talented vets on the team as much as possible instead of kicking them to the curb because they're too this, they're too that.

Kicked to the curb? Now you are being ridiculous and stupid. Per your post Speraw kept veterans and DIDN'T kick them to the curb. Priddy is a really good player. He was the freshest player on the court on BOTH squads, it showed and he had a midas touch game. Both teams played hard but clearly tired emotionally and physically from the tourney and the 1/2 losses and maybe some guys were not in a good state of mind..... (actually a few were if you bothered to notice) Speraw clearly said he suspected he would have to go the bench and they answered the bell. The team won and all the veterans stepped up a serious notch.
