Yeah, so she can't be selected to the national team for six months. Does the national team even have any events in the next six months?

USWNT (woso) have basically zip in the next 6 months. Some non-Victory Tour friendlies (fewer than 10 for gold, maybe 5) from now until early 2017. It has no effect on Solo's play or pay (such as it is) with NWSL's Seattle Reign. The next remotely large item on the calendar is Algarve Cup/SheBelieves Cup every March. Solo would be eligible to return by then. Having to earn her way back to a new WNT contract (for 2017+) might involve some further hoop-jumping. (Algarve is an annual pre-season exhibition/training tourney in Portugal, the most prestigious of several in the same FIFA window. SheBelieves is USSoccer's upstart exhibition/cash cow tourney at the same time, targeting USA, Germany, France, and England every year -- which automatically makes it a juicy match-up of top-10 teams, however Euro fans complain that it's out of sync with their preseason training camps. Both are unofficial tourneys with no qualifiers and no standing, other than bragging rights.) All 2016 WNT woso contracts expire around December, when they negotiate a new CBA to replace the expired 2012 CBA + MOU (which they agreed remains binding throughout 2016). We fans expect those discussions to be somewhat acrimonious and laundry-revealing, ending in a group hug. Nobody's going into it happy. Still, this does ensure at least 5 or so matches with Naeher and Harris sharing GK duties. We'll get to see who the staff thinks is #4 in the pool.

It isn't just a six-month suspension by US Soccer. Her contract with the USWNT has been terminated.
I think they've effectively made a clean break from the Solo era and will be determining the new #1 GK in the spring tournaments.

Her contract with the USWNT has been terminated. Gilmoy just said that everyone's contract with the USWNT will be terminated within the next six months. So there is nothing special about it happening to Solo.

BTW, the vast majority, and perhaps all of those contracts will be terminated in six months, not within six months.

Its a cowardly act by US Soccer. Her comments were obnoxious but if a man said this would he get six months? Of course not.
How is this different from what Lily King did? Or Mack Horton, Camille Lecourt. The difference is in how the media covered it. Show some backbone.

Also pretty much every notable football manager of the last 10 years has said something almost identical to this. Mourinho, Ferguson, Wenger, Pep, Mancini, a half dozen others I can think of off the top of my head.

And they've all been fired multiple times each The emerging details are ... a bit convoluted. Briefly: - Solo has one contract, with USSF (not with Seattle Reign). For this, she earns (a) salary, (b) bonus for call-ups and wins, and (c) bonus for playing in NWSL.
- USWNT woso contracts (via the CBA) are a nonesuch entity in the sporting world Essentially, Solo (and other contracted players) must be called in when available. Non-contracted players may be called in on trials six times in one cycle(?), thereafter USSF must give them a contract or drop them. (Sermanni called in many different players up to their limit.) The total number of contracts is fixed (24?). Ergo, WNT contracts are almost like tenure: you get one only by firing a previous holder (or she retires or conceives). This severely limits the USWNT HC's flexibility in naming rosters. It is totally different from USVB's pool of ~30 players, with HC KK freely naming whichever subset he wants. (I'm pretty sure most USA wvb and mvb pros (and USMNT soccer) earn most of their $$ from their pro clubs, so they don't rely on WNT/MNT call-ups for their salary. woso is a different world: USSF does it their way out of necessity.)
- Solo's terminated contract appears to be only the NT portion. We've been assured that it won't affect her NWSL eligibility (she still plays for the Reign). We assume it means she still earns the (c) NWSL portion of her salary. This has the immediate effect that Solo cannot be called in for any upcoming friendlies through 2017/Feb.
- USSoccer's current WNT contracts still follow the expired 2012 CBA + later MOU of indeterminate expiration date (but both parties agreed in ~May that it binds through 2016, in particular its no-strike clause for Rio'16). The 5 players' equal pay lawsuit vs. USSoccer is still in court. We all expect that, around the end of 2016, both sides will sit down and negotiate a new CBA, after which the players drop their lawsuit. Hence, all WNT players should be on totally new contracts for 2017+. (Until then, there still is a benefit to having a 2016 contract in good standing: it still pays (a) and (b) for the 2016 friendlies).
- Solo's domestic violence case in WA is also still pending in court. woso conspiracists have floated the idea that USSF is preemptively distancing themselves from Solo, so that an unfavorable verdict doesn't force their hand. If Solo emerges intact from that, she presumably can play her way back into the pool later.
She's ... complicated. Even the USWNT woso fans, legal dabbler subgroup, don't fully grasp the machinations.

Lily King (who certainly went from sparky to annoying very quickly) doesn't have a decade of disciplinary issues, fighting with coaches and players, drunken brawls and wrecked cars. I think it's more cumulative than cowardly. Rio was the straw that broke the camel's back. Of course, if the USWNT really put character before competition, Solo would have been let go years ago, so there is more than a whiff of hypocrisy in the air. But "cowardly?" Enh. Hard for me to work up much empathy for Solo, who is a nightmare.

Hope seems like a lousy human being no question, and had the suspension been for the domestic violence etc. no problem whatsoever, but it was for making a remark so common you would be hard pressed to find a week in the EPL some manager doesn't utter some version of it. Also made against someone who has been pretty outspoken on a labor issue (although if that overlapped in time with the DV stuff, then that would seem to argue against it being retaliation)

I was going to give another one of my award winning posts on this topic but I think Geddy nailed it, right up to the black eye for the National Team for turning a blind eye on her previous "issues"…I'm willing to bet she's back on the team next spring working with younger keepers
