I think she'll be a really good player for Wisconsin. 6-8 blocker on the rightside, I think she could be Lutz 2.0. Her and Lutz are very different players. I saw Dana play.... She is actually pretty quick for her size. I'd say she is more of cross between Lutz/Fitz.

"Closing the block" is overrated. Often, that just means the ability to make up for bad reads. A really good blocker knows where the set is going and THAT is the best skill to have (although 6'8" is another asset). The other part of the equation is the team's blocking scheme and that is a reflection of good coaching rather than great athletes compensating for bad game plans.
In short, how quick a kid moves can be misleading when evaluating how effective a blocker she is.
I've never understood programs who expect their middles to block pin to pin. It's just expecting too much -- and it makes it really hard to play floor defense.

A Lutz/Fitz cross? You're saying she's a Futz?

I'm excited to see how Rettke develops! I hope she develops into a dominant six rotation OPP. At 6'8, she'd be pretty impressive if she learns to maximize her frame.

It's just expecting too much -- and it makes it really hard to play floor defense. Not when it comes to recruiting. Any coach will tell you it's preferable to teach a mental aspect of the game than to try to develop great athleticism. The learning curve is much shorter for the former. It doesn't always work. Some players never pick it up, but it's still the prudent path in an either/or situation. Plus, athleticism allows much more room for error. People constantly rag on Texas' backrow play, but they've still went to the most final fours in recent memory. That's the luxury of athleticism. Digression aside, that's why in recruiting coaches are enamored with girls that can play pin-to-pin. You are right about the importance of reading a block, but teaching that to a freak athlete has a higher potential for success than recruiting someone that can already read the block but isn't a great athlete. The latter has a defined ceiling.

This reminds me a bit of 2011 for Texas with a big bonus in 2017 to include a top setter.
Sun = Eckerman (Great terminators; need some work on passing) Butler = Bell (Physical, athletic MBs that can terminate and great blocking instincts)

Honestly, I think both will be upgrades over Haley and Khat. Sun is the best offensive OH to enter the college game in quite some time and Butler is just a monster of an athlete. Both will be major impact players from day 1.

Wisconsin is turning into a recruiting powerhouse: Carlini-2013 #1 Gillis-2014 #7 Williams-2015 #6 Duello-2015 #9 Haggerty-2016 #5 Hilley-2017 #3 Rettke-2017 #8
Not quite Texas, but that is on part with any other program over the last 5 classes. I know Gillis was a transfer, but I included her to highlight the accumulation of talent.
